Obituaries for April 1, 2010


Alma Evans

Funeral services for Alma Evans, 98, of Frankston, were held March 28, 2010 at Autry Funeral Home chapel in Frankston with the Rev. J. A. Griffin officiating.


Burial followed at Poynor Cemetery.


Mrs. Evans passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010 in Frankston.


She was born January 4, 1912 in Alabama.


Mrs. Evans was a Baptist and a homemaker.


She is preceded in death by her parents, William Doss Powell and Mary Frances Powell; husband, Jack Evans; sisters, Roxie Powell LeMaster and Alice Powell Clakley; and brothers, Woodrow Powell, Doss Powell, Durwood Powell and Belton Powell.


Survivors include nieces and nephews, Rosemary Williams of Athens, Margaret Powell Tyson of Alba, Mack Powell of Frankston, Jason Parker, Jade Parker, Ernest Clakely and Levi Clakely, all of Tyler; several great nieces and nephews and several great great nieces and nephews.

Bill Roberts

Funeral services for Bill Roberts, 58, of Van, were held Tuesday, April 6, at Poynor Baptist Church with Pastor Marc Jennings, the Rev. George Folmar and the Rev. Jim Boyte officiating.


Burial followed at Poynor Cemetery.


Services were under the direction of Autry Funeral Home in Frankston.


Mr. Roberts passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010, in Van.


He was born November 25, 1951, in Athens.


Mr. Roberts was a member of Poynor Baptist Church. He graduated from LaPoynor High School in 1970 and worked in the oil business for 36 years.


He is preceded in death by his father Wilburn Roberts and brothers Charles Roberts, Donny Roberts and Ricky Roberts.


Survivors include his wife Linda of Van; mother, Elouise Roberts of LaRue; daughter, Michele Canfield and husband Jason of Atlanta, Ga.; sons, Jordan Roberts of Frisco and Isaac Roberts of Lewisville; step daughters, Kelly Pridgin, Kay Pridgin and Kari Pridgin, all of Van; sisters, Betty Bates of New Orleans, La., Linda Ferguson and husband Tom of Colorado, Patsy Roberts of Beaumont, Judy Davis of Athens, Pam Morton and husband Russell of Rockdale and Sissy Moss and husband Robbie of LaRue; brothers, David Roberts and wife Pam of LaRue, Buster Roberts and wife Denise of LaRue, and Mike Roberts and wife Jennifer of Caldwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Pallbearers were David Roberts, Mike Roberts, Buster Roberts, Tom Ferguson, Carl Thompson and Danny Thompson.


Honorary pallbearers were Russell Morton, Robbie Moss, Jesse Smith, Richard Dansby, Mark Wagley and Robert Kennedy.



Tammy Freeman

Graveside services for Tammy Renee Freeman, 42, of Seminole were scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, April 8, at Noonday Cemetery in Noonday.


Burial was scheduled to follow in Noonday Cemetery under direction of Tyler Memorial Funeral Home.


Tammy was born March 24, 1968 in Tyler to Gerald and Doris Freeman and passed away at her residence in Seminole on April 3, 2010.


She was a vet tech at the Lake Palestine Animal Clinic and also worked at the Seminole Veterinary Clinic after moving to Seminole.


Tammy is survived by a daughter, Miranda Raye Freeman of Seminole; mother, Doris Freeman of Seminole; father, Gerald Freeman of Berryville; brother, Don Dykes of Houston; and several aunts, uncles and nephews.


Visitation was scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.



Obituaries for April 15, 2010


Truett Rosenberg

Truett “Buddy Buddy” Rosenberg died Friday evening April 2, 2010, in Tyler.


Mr. Rosenberg was born in Rockwall on June 2, 1921 to the late Earl I. and Mallie Edith Trent Rosenberg.


Buddy-Buddy, as he was known by everyone in LaRue where he resided for the past 50 years, was instrumental in starting the LaRue / New York Volunteer Fire Department where he was fire chief for numerous years.


He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served as a tail gunner on the B-17.


He also served on the LaRue Cemetery Board until 2009.


He had been self-employed, and was an avid gardener, fisherman and was a member of the First Christian Church of Dallas.


Services for Mr. Rosenberg were under direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.


A graveside service was held April 6, 2010 at the LaRue Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Palmer officiating.


He was given the fireman’s final call and two trucks from the New York / LaRue Fire Department escorted family to the cemetery.


Mr. Rosenberg was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Rosenberg in 2002; and a brother, Scott Rosenberg.


He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Leona and Alvin May and Patricia and Joe Bragg all of Frankston; five grandchildren, Michael May and wife Dawn of Flint, David May and wife Yvonne of Nederland, Julie Forester and husband Bryan of LaRue, Scott Bragg of New Summerfield, Kristi Forester and husband Brent of LaRue; 10 great grandchildren, Cortney May, Truett May, Jessica Forester, Kyle Forester, Damean Carpenter, Michael Carpenter, Gage Bragg, Evee Bragg, Colton Clair, Chase Forester; brother, Norman Rosenberg and wife Ruth of Commerce; sister-in-law, Joyce Nichols; nephews, Brit Rosenberg, Benny Rosenberg and wife Peggy; niece, Karen Ellithrop; and a host of great friends.


Pallbearers were Michael May, David May, Bryan Forester, Scott Bragg, Benny Rosenberg and Tony Hernandez.


Honorary pallbearers were the local area fire departments.


Ray Holsomback

Funeral services for Ray Louis Holsomback, 87, of Garland, formerly of Frankston, were held Friday, April 9, at Autry Funeral Home chapel in Frankston with the Rev. J. A. Griffin officiating.


Burial followed at Liberty Hill Cemetery, Frankston.


Mr. Holsomback passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010, in Garland.


He was born August 4, 1922 in Frankston.


Mr. Holsomback was a member of the Assembly of God, served in the U. S. Air Force during World War II, was former owner of an automotive paint and body shop and formerly worked for the Garland ISD.


He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen Christine Holsomback, four sisters and three brothers.


Survivors include daughter, Nita Sawicki of Eustace; sons, Terry Holsomback of Garland and Jerry Holsomback and wife Kathi of Clear Lake; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Alma Lee Thompson

Funeral services for Alma Lee Thompson, 85, of Corsicana, were held Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Autry Funeral Home chapel in Frankston with the Rev. Randy Richter and the Rev. George Folmar officiating.


Burial followed at Liberty Hill Cemetery, Frankston.


Mrs. Thompson passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010 in Corsicana. She was born July 28, 1924 in Van. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Assembly of God and was formerly fountain manager at Carter Drug Store in Dallas and cook at Tejas Café in Dallas.


She is preceded in death by her father, Author LeeRoy Hopkins; mother, Allie Alma Hopkins-Davis; daughter, Jodie Miller and husband, James W. Thompson.


Survivors include sons, J. W. Smiley and wife Georgia of Frankston and Roy Dean Smiley of Seagoville; daughters, Joan Marie Smiley of Corsicana, Judy Kay Harry and husband Benny of Retreat and Kathy Ann Swindle and husband Jimmy of Corsicana; sisters, Fayrene Tiner of Tyler and Bonnie Holsomback Dean of Frankston; 18 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 15 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.


Pallbearers will be Jason Lee Cogan, Jason Kyle Perry, Harold Wayne Miller, Cliff Pendley, Dewayne Farmer, Rudy Hernandez, Jr., Jimmy Ray Swindle, Jr. and Randy Hernandez.

Darla Johnson Steele

Darla Johnson Steele, 37, passed away March 20, 2010 at her home.


Funeral services were held Saturday, March 27, at the Oak Crest Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Huff officiating.


Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery.


Darla was born Jan. 4, 1973 in Waco to Seabe and Glenda (Frix) Johnson.


She loved to bowl, talk on the phone and enjoyed going to family reunions.


She received her certification in criminal justice and worked as a correctional officer.


She is survived by her sons, Christopher Huffman and Mitchell Casey Johnson; daughter, Amber Dawn Marie Kasparian; and mother, Glenda Johnson all of Palestine; her brothers, Stephen Crouse, Dennis Crouse, Calvin Johnson, Danny Johnson and Seabe A. Johnson; grandmother, Betsy Frix; grandfather, Forrest Frix; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.



Ruth Helen Johnson

Ruth Helen Johnson, 88, a resident of Houston and a native of Frankston, died April 18, 2010, in The Woodlands.


She was born Sept. 4, 1921, in Frankston to the late Albert and Lela Ballard. She was a 1939 graduate of Frankston High School.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Johnson, and brother, Howard Ballard.


She is survived by her children: Larry Johnson and wife, Maria; Sherryl Daniel and husband, David; Kathy Parker and husband, Robert; Donna Ramirez and husband, Jesse; Mark Johnson and wife, Robin; her sister, Mary Jo Elrod and husband, Melvin, of Frankston; brothers, Granville Ballard and wife, Chris, of Fort Worth; Norris Ballard and wife, Joan, of Albuquerque; and Ray Ballard of Whitehouse; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.


Ruth Helen was a Christian who was baptized when she was 13 years old. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, dancing and, most of all, spending time with family. She loved watching the Astros and playing bingo.

Funeral was April 22 at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home. Burial was in Forest Park East Cemetery.
