Shirley Bass McAnally

Funeral services for Shirley Ann Bass Lovelady McAnally, are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville with Bro. Larry Harrelson officiating. She will be laid to rest at Still Waters Memorial Gardens.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.

Shirley Ann Bass Lovelady McAnally was born April 3, 1936, to Odis and Ruth (Higginbotham) Bass. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday,  Aug. 18, 2025 at the age of 89.

Shirley grew up in the rural community of Bugtussel, on her parent’s farm. She was always a good student and had a talent for music, but left high school early to marry James Lovelady in 1953, a common path for many girls of that time. Shirley and James enjoyed 25 years together, welcoming four children during that time: Karen, Donna, Pat, and James Edwin. Unfortunately, their life together was cut short by James’ unexpected diagnosis of kidney failure. Shirley cared for him attentively throughout his extended illness while raising their children, not an easy task, but no one ever heard her complain or feel sorry for herself during this tough time.

After James’ death, she later reconnected with her high school sweetheart Oscar McAnally, who also grew up in the same rural community of Bugtussel, now Enterprise. They soon married and lived happily together for over 38 years until Oscar’s death in 2016.

Shirley’s eyes would always light up whenever she talked about her family and how they embraced Oscar when they married. It was truly a blessing. Since Oscar was an Army veteran and a strict disciplinarian, Shirley was amused at the way the grandkids and great-grands could “wrap him around their finger.”

During their time together, they both worked at the LaPoynor School District, Oscar as high school principal and Shirley as a secretary. While working at the school, he encouraged her to get her high school diploma. For a smart, capable woman like Shirley, this was a big step in securing her confidence and setting a good example for her children and grandchildren. Oscar was her biggest cheerleader, and she was his biggest fan.

After retirement, they enjoyed traveling in their RV across the country, attending antique auctions and exploring resale shops along the way. Together, they operated a booth at The Treasure Cove antique mall in Jacksonville, enjoying the camaraderie of the other vendors and their customers.

Family and faith were everything to Shirley; her home was always a welcoming and inviting place where friends and family would often “drop in” for coffee and conversation. Every Friday evening, for years, all the children and grandchildren gathered to share a meal and fellowship – strengthening already strong generational ties. Shirley’s bright smile and easy laugh were encouraging to all who crossed her threshold.

A member of Enterprise Baptist Church for over 40 years, Shirley loved the time spent in Bible study and sharing her considerable musical talent. She especially loved playing the organ, accompanied by her oldest daughter, Karen, on the piano. Multi-talented, Shirley was also proficient on the piano and encouraged her daughters’ singing talents as well. While at Enterprise, she served as secretary-treasurer, pianist and organist, and president of the Women’s Missionary Auxiliary. She especially loved the WMA’s Christmas Shoebox project for children overseas and looked forward to putting the boxes together every year.

Famous for her homemade sweet pickles and yummy layered fruit trifle (a church dinner favorite), Shirley was a wonderful cook and enjoyed sharing her talent whenever there was a family in need or a loss in the community.

Shirley’s life was a testimony to her remarkable selflessness, kindness, and sweet spirit. She will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Odis Jr. and Bobby Bass.

Left to cherish her memory are the following: sister-in-law JoAnn Bass; stepson Gary McAnally and wife Rita; daughters Karen Harrelson and husband Larry; Donna Wemp, and Pat Fortner and husband Jim; and son James Lovelady and wife Trina.

Shirley is survived by grandchildren: Jamie, Kristin, Stephen, Jeremy, Josh, Scooter, Lindsey, Brandon, Christopher, and Magen; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family would like to give a special thanks to great-niece Tiffanie Meador and her daughter Karter for their invaluable help and support during the past few months and also to the wonderful caregiving team at Hospice+ for their help during this difficult time.

Pallbearers are Casey Crane, Kevin Crane, Shaun McAnally, David Farrell, Scooter Fortner, Gary McAnally, James Lovelady and Craig Bass. Honorary pallbearer is Jim Fortner and grandsons.

The family requests that you consider donating to Shirley’s beloved WMA group at Enterprise. They are mission-oriented and support projects at home and abroad, such as the Crisis Center and the annual global BMII Christmas Shoebox ministry. To donate, send a text message to Tamra Bolton at (903) 360-6262. Donations are accepted by mail or through Venmo.

Landon Loveless

Landon Loveless, age 18, passed away on Aug. 29, 2025, in Bullard. He was born on Oct. 2, 2006, in Mt. Pleasant to Bryan and Cassie Loveless.

Landon had a love for sports of all kinds, but he really had a passion for football, basketball, and baseball. He could quote any stat at the drop of a hat but would let you know if a certain sport was “pointless”.

He had a competitive drive that couldn’t be matched. That drive led him to success with his academics, such as graduating in the top 10 of his graduating class and being a member of NHS at Frankston High School.

He loved playing Trivial Pursuit, that was taught to him by his Mimi. His goal was to beat everyone.

His love language was food, and he loved his mom’s cooking the most. Give him a plate filled with his favorite meals, and his day would be made.

Landon loved listening to music and discovering new songs that he couldn’t wait to share with his mom. His dad was his best friend. They loved to recap each day together, and Landon loved talking sports with his dad and drafting his fantasy football leagues.

He is survived by his loving parents Bryan and Cassie Loveless; grandparents David and Debbie Loveless and Sandra Rigney-Rushing; special cousins Austin Loveless and Brendan Loveless and Vera and Dax Haney; aunts and uncles Brent Loveless, R.J. and Brittany Haney, Ashley Rushing and Bradley Rushing; sister Leighton Loveless; and great uncle Jimmy Walker.

Landon was preceded in death by his grandfather Donnie Rushing.

A service was held on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, at Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home at 2 p.m.. in Mt. Pleasant.

An online registry is now available at batescoopersloanfuneralhome.com .

Caroline Vornberg

Caroline Vornberg, 75, of Westcliffe, Colorado, and Frankston passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13.

Caroline was born in Dallas in 1950 to Alice and Frederick Lee Adams. Caroline and her brother Fred, were born in Dallas, but Alexandria, Louisiana, was their home for most of their lives. Caroline completed her undergrad at Northwestern University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

After working for several years in Slidell, Louisiana, she married her first husband, John Alexander, (married 1973-1984). They moved to Houston and had their only child, Jennifer Lee Alexander (now McIntire).

Caroline went on to complete her Master’s in Education at the University of Houston and later her Doctorate of Education from A&M Commerce, where Jim was a professor. These two later degrees were achieved while being a single mom and working full-time.

She had a lifelong passion for teaching and education and taught for over 30 years in multiple school districts, including Alief in Houston, Garland, and Mesquite. Her primary focus was literacy in English as a Second Language (ESL). She also taught amnesty classes for individuals seeking citizenship.

Caroline met the love of her life, Jim, at an Earth Day festival in the late 1990s, and they were married on Feb. 28, 2000, at their former home in Garland. They enjoyed 25 very happy and loving years together.

For the last several years, they have split their time between their mountain home in Colorado and their lake house in Texas. After they both retired, they traveled extensively across the United States and Europe. Their most recent trip was to Hawaii with friends, which was a wonderful time by all accounts.

In addition to her passion for education, she was a champion for Mother Earth long before it became fashionable. She regularly took her young daughter to Sierra Club meetings. She has also always been a human rights advocate; accordingly, she introduced her teenage daughter to peaceful protesting.

No surprise that she was also an animal lover and always had at least one pet in her life. None was as special to her as her sweet dog, Ciri, who came into her life unexpectedly, and they were literally inseparable from day one. He was her emotional support dog, and they loved each other dearly. They had seven years together before he crossed the rainbow bridge.

Caroline was a whirl of activity almost all the time. She did not sit still for long and was happiest when she was busy helping others or spending time with friends and family. She volunteered with multiple organizations and was active on various boards at different times. She was a firm believer in community and fostered connections throughout her life wherever she called home. Caroline was a shining light in the Westcliffe community in her later years. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her there.

Caroline was preceded in death by both parents and her loyal companion, Ciri.

She is survived by her loving husband Dr. James A. Vornberg; her daughter Jennifer, granddaughter Emma, brother Fred Adams, bonus son Scott Vornberg and his wife Laurie, along with their two children, Tyler and Stephanie, bonus son Mark Vornberg, and his wife Shelly.

Services are happening locally throughout the week, hosted by her church and many community organizations she holds dear. Consider a donation to World Central Kitchen or High-Country Recycling (click on this link to donate).
