MAIDENS BASKETBALL 2020-21 SEASON
Challenging year yields 3-1 playoff success
The Frankston Maidens’ 2020-21 season was a very challenging year, with COVID, two times the team being quarantined, the snow week and life, Coach Christi Coker said, in wrapping up what turned out to be a successful 3-1 playoff performance.
“Even through all of this, this team battled through and stuck together to have a long playoff journey,” the coach said.
Coach Coker said, she thinks it has been since 2012 since the Maidens won a playoff game and since 2001 that they have been to the Regional Tournament.
“It was an exciting year,” she said. “I knew that when the UIL came out with the AA alignments, our district was going to be very tough, with Martins Mill and LaPoynor in it, but I knew, in the playoffs, we would be able to compete well with other districts in the region.”
Coach Coker said that the win over Lovelady (Bi-district) “was huge” and gave the Maidens confidence that they could win in the playoffs.
“Then, the win over a very tall Bruceville-Eddy team (Area) gave us even more fire,” she said. “We went to play LaPoynor in the Regional Quarterfinals, and I am sure not many people thought we could win, but it’s hard to beat a team three times in a season.”
The Maidens had lost to the Lady Flyers two times during District 19-AA play.
“The Maidens believed in themselves and came out on top over a very talented LaPoynor team,” the coach recalled. “The celebration was awesome.”
The coach said that the Maidens had only one day of rest and one day to prepare for the No. 3 team in the state before they headed to Jacksonville to play Douglass in the Regional Semifinals.
“I knew it had been a very highly emotional and physical game with LaPoynor,” she observed. “We battled Douglass for three quarters and then the tide turned. They outscored us 20-7 in the fourth to win. Tia Billingsly going out with a knee injury hurt us tremendously.”
Nevertheless, the Maidens “fought hard to the end”, the coach said.
“I could never be more proud of this group of young ladies,” Coach Coker said. “They have all the heart, fire, determination and fight in them I have ever seen in a group.”
The Maiden coach said it was the last game for seniors Abbie Ramsey (13) and Teallie Tatum (21).
“They will be missed, not only for their basketball skills, but in their leadership and character,” she said. “I am so happy they got to experience a wonderful year as seniors.”
Coach Coker said that next year, the Maidens basketball team will have the core back. Four juniors will be back as seniors to lead the team. They are Brianna Looney (00), Maggie Caveness (12), Tia Billingsly (14) and Kelsey Sexton (23).
“We have a lot of good young players that we will be able to add with them,” Coach Coker said. “Look out for Shay Hatton (25) and Kaylee Davis(10) to do great things.”
The coach noted that the Maidens will be fortunate to have some really good JV (junior varsity) kids and a good group of 8th graders coming up.
“I am excited about the future,” Coach Coker said.
“We ended the year 17-8 and Regional Quarterfinals Champs and Regional Semifinalists,” she said. “I am so blessed and happy to get to be the Maidens coach.”

Fateful final quarter spoils Maidens
early standoff with Douglass, 60-45
The Frankston Maidens battled the formidable 3rd ranked Douglass girls for three quarters and then succumbed in a fateful fourth quarter surge 60-45 in the Class AA Regional Semifinals at Jacksonville Saturday, Feb. 27, according to a report by FHS Coach Christi Coker.
The Maidens were down by two points in the first period but led 28-25 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter, they were down by a field goal 38-40. The two teams took the lead back and forth during that quarter, neither team leading the other by more than a few points, each seemingly having an answer for the other’s go-ahead scores.
The fourth quarter was a different and fateful period for the Maidens. Douglass surged ahead before the Maidens could get on the scoreboard. They outscored the Frankston girls 20-7 in that final quarter.
“The score does not show how the game went,” Coach Coker said. “In the fourth we had to start fouling and they scored some easy buckets.”
Leading scorer for the Maidens was Abbie Ramsey with a game high 29 points, including three 3-pointers. Maggie Caveness and Ja’shaylyn (Shay) Hatton, who had scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, in the Quarterfinals game on Feb. 25, were held to only 4 each. Brianna Looney also had 4 points. Tia Billingsley had 3 and Kaylee Davis had 1.
Ramsey had 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Hatton had 11 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Caveness had 10 rebounds and a block. Looney had 3 rebounds and a steal. Billingsley had 2 rebounds until she sustained a knee injury and went out of the game halfway into the third quarter, Coach Coker said.
The coach said that Douglass’ two best players scored 28 points and 12 points, respectively.
“They have a solid team at 26-0 for the year and are ranked No. 3 in the state,” the Maiden coach said. (See Coach Coker’s Season Wrapup article ABOVE)

Maidens team play praised in 59-55
Quarterfinals victory over LaPoynor
The Frankston Maidens pulled off a surprise win over the 14th ranked LaPoynor Lady Flyers 59-55 Thursday, Feb. 25 in Regional Quarterfinals Class AA basketball action at Cross Roads High School, according to a report from Coach Christi Coker.
Coach Coker praised the Maidens for their great team play in the win.
The win sets up a Regional Semifinals game with 4th ranked Douglass at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27 at the John Alexander Gym, located on the former Lon Morris College campus in Jacksonville. Ironically, two tribes of Indians will be playing in a gymnasium hosted by the Indians of Jacksonville.
The Lady Flyers, at 8-2, had been the second seed from District 19-AA and the Maidens, at 6-4, were third seed. The Lady Flyers had defeated the Maidens twice in district play and were considered favorites by prognosticators to win, going into the contest.
LaPoynor appeared to be off to a predictable start in the first quarter as they moved out to a 13-7 advantage. However, in the second quarter, the Maidens outscored the Lady Flyers to trail by only 2 points, 23-21 at halftime.
Frankston came out of the halftime break on a scoring surge 22-12 to lead 43-35 at the end of the third quarter. LaPoynor came back to tie the score during the fourth quarter 49-49 but the Maidens went ahead after that to stay. The Lady Flyers came to within 2 points at 55-57 with seconds to go but then Tia Billingsly went to the free throw line on a two-shot foul and sank them both to give the Maidens their 4-point victory margin at the final horn.
Coach Coker reported the following scoring:
Junior Post Maggie Caveness led scorers with 14 and “a ton of rebounds”. Sophomore Guard Ja’shalyn (Shay) Hatton was also in double figures with 13 points. Junior Guard Billingsly and junior Guard Brianna Looney each had 8. Freshman Guard Kaylee Davis and senior Guard Abbie Ramsey each had 7. Junior Post Kelsey Sexton scored 2.

Maidens capture Area title 46-32
over Bruceville-Eddy on Feb. 23
The Frankston Maidens advanced as Area Champions in the Class AA basketball playoffs Tuesday, Feb. 23 with a convincing 46-32 victory over Bruceville-Eddy at Centerville, according to FHS Coach Christi Coker.
The win pits Frankston, third in District 19–AA, against neighboring LaPoynor, which finished as 19-AA runnerup, in the Regional Quarterfinals. The game will be played on Thursday, Feb.. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Cross Roads High School Gym. Frankston will be home team. Tickets on sale at the door.
The Maidens outscored Bruceville-Eddy in all but the fourth quarter. They led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and were ahead 30-22 at halftime. They outscored their opponent 11-4 in the third quarter and were 5-6, preserving a 14-point victory.
Leading scorer for the Maidens was Abbie Ramsey with 18 and Brianna Looney also was in double figures with 12 points. Maggie Caveness had 7, Tia Billingsly 5 and Teallie Tatum and Kelsey Sexton 2 each.

Inspired Indians’ play falls short
as 20-AA champ Grapeland wins
The Frankston Indians basketball team played an inspired game against District 20-AA champion Grapeland Saturday, Feb. 20 but came away with an 87-68 loss in a Class AA Bi-district game, played on the FHS home court, according to FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
The Indians had a challenging season, plagued by a late practice start due to the extended football playoff schedule and playing without key players for many games. Nevertheless they ended their season with a 4-6 district mark and fourth place seed in the playoffs and a 10-15 season record.
“The guys played extremely hard and competed to the end,” Coach Albritton said. “I’m so proud of the way they played and handled the last three games against top 4 ranked teams.”
The Indians gave Grapeland a challenge in the first quarter, trailing by just 20-29. However, the Sandies picked up the pace in the second quarter, outscoring the Tribe 25-12, leading 54-32 at halftime. The Indians came back strong in the second half outscoring the Sandies 36-33, but not enough to offset their first half deficit. Grapeland had two players with more than 30 points in the game, one with seven 3-point goals, all in that fateful first half.
Offensively for the Indians, three players were in double figures, two with more than 20 points. Cael Bruno led with 23 points, 13 from field goals in the second half, including a 3-pointer. He also was 4 for 4 from the free throw line. Kody Loebig had 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Isaiah Allen scored 10, including a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter. Caleb Ramsey scored 8 and was 2 for 3 at the charity stripe. Benton Allen had 6 points and Brink Bizzell 1 on a fourth quarter free throw.

Maidens win bi-district title 59-53,
meet Bruceville-Eddy in 2-A Area
The Frankston Maidens are bi-district winners after the first round of Class AA basketball playoff action in which they defeated District 20-AA Lovelady Friday, Feb. 12 in a thriller 59-53, according to a report from FHS Coach Christi Coker.
The Maidens will now go into the Area Playoffs against Bruceville-Eddy, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Centerville High School. Previous date was changed due to possible weather conditions.
Speaking about the bi-district game the Maiden coach had praise for her team.
“It was a great team effort for the win,” she said.
The Maidens led after a quarter of play 17-15 but Lovelady came back to take the lead at halftime 34-28. The Maidens were able to regroup during the halftime break and came back in the third quarter to take a 44-42 lead. In the final quarter, the Maidens outscored the Lady Lions 15-11 to secure the win.
Abbie Ramsey led scorers with 13 points. Also in double figures was Shay Hatton with 10. She pulled down 7 rebounds as well. Tia Billingsly and Brianna Looney each had 9 points and Billingsly had 6 rebounds. Maggie Caveness scored 8 points while contributing 13 rebounds and 3 steals. Kelsey Sexton and Kaylee Davis scored 4 each and Teallie Tatum had 2.
The bi-district game was played at Cushing High School.

Indians ‘played well’ against top-ranked
Martins Mill but fell 71-54 on Feb. 12
The Frankston Indians “played well on both ends of the court” Friday night, Feb. 12, leading 17-15 at the end of the first quarter and ahead 23-22 with three minutes to go in the half, but Martins Mill picked up their scoring to win 71-54 in the final district and regular season game for both teams, according to FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
Martins Mill outscored the Indians 20-6 in the second quarter to take a 35-23 lead into the dressing room at halftime. They went on to score 36 points in the second half, but the Indians answered with 31. In fact, the Tribe got within 9 points early in the fourth quarter, Coach Albritton said.
“I loved the effort the guys play with,” the coach said.
Three Indian players scored in double figures, led by Cael Bruno 19 points, including three 3-pointers and a 4 for 6 performance at the free throw line. Caleb Ramsey scored 11 points with two 3-pointers. Kody Loebig hit for 10 points, including two 3-pointers. Isaiah Allen scored 8 including 4 for 6 in free throws. Brink Bizzell had 6 including a 3-pointer.
The Indians finished the season in fourth place in District 19-AA with a 10-14 season record and 4-6 district mark. They are scheduled to play District 20-AA champion Grapeland in bi-district Saturday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at Frankston High School, in a change due to weather. District champion Martins Mill will play the 20-AA fourth place team at a time and place to be announced. They finished 24-3 on the season and were 10-0 in district competition.

Indians’ defensive effort fails to hold
down LaPoynor in 52-38 district loss
The Frankston Indians, playing with two players short, put on a stellar defensive performance against the Class AA No. 4 LaPoynor Flyers before the talented Flyers came away with a 52-38 victory Tuesday, Feb. 9, according to a report by FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
“I loved our defensive intensity, especially in the second half,” Coach Albritton observed. “The kids stayed in there.”
Senior Night was observed at the game instead of on Friday, Feb. 12, because of the Maidens bi-district game on that date. Brink Bizzell is the senior on the team.
LaPoynor had a big first half offensively, leading 34-18 at halftime. However the Indians managed to hold the Flyers to only 18 points in the second half while scoring 20 themselves. That advantage was not enough to overcome the 16-point lead the Flyers had built up in the first half.
Cael Bruno led Indian scorers with 16 points, including a 3-pointer. Brink Bizzell had 7 points, including a 3-pointer. He was 2 for 2 at the free throw line. Kody Loebig had 6 points on two 3-pointers. Caleb Ramsey had 4, Austin Carr 3 on a 3-pointer and Ethan Lade with 2.
Garrett Nuckolls led LaPoynor with 17 points, including three 3-pointers and a 2 for 2 performance at the charity stripe. All but three of his points were in the productive first half for the Flyers. Kamron Eldridge had 12, also mostly in that first half. DiJuan Whitehead scored 10 points, 8 of which were in the second half. Cooper Gracey got 6, Evan Almeida 3 and Kase Johnston and Matt Driskell 2 each.
Flyers coach Dean Nuckolls reported that Eldridge and Driskell each had 3 assists, Nuckolls and Almeida each had 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Johnston had 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Gracey had 4 assists and 8 rebounds and Whitehead had 13 rebounds and 2 steals.
The Indians have another tough game coming up at home against the District 19-AA leader, Martins Mill. The varsity game will start at 6 p.m. It will be the final regular season game of the season.
The fourth place Indians will be in the playoffs against the District 20-AA champion Grapeland. The bi-district game starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18 at Palestine High School, Coach Albritton said.

Maidens’ bi-district foe is Lovelady
Feb. 12 after win at Cross Roads
The Frankston Maidens varsity ended their regular season on a winning note, downing Cross Roads 54-24 Friday, Feb. 5 on the road, according to a report from FHS Coach Christi Coker.
The varsity finished 6-4 in district and 14-7 overall.
Earlier in the evening, the Maidens Junior Varsity lost to Cross Roads JV 28-20.
The Maidens varsity, 19-AA third place team, now concentrates on a AA bi-district challenge when they go against the District 20-AA runner-up, Lovelady, on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Cushing gym. That game will be followed at 8 p.m. when the LaPoynor Lady Flyers meet Grapeland, third in 20-AA, at the Cushing gym. Playoff game ticket prices are $5 and $3.
Leading scorer for the Maidens varsity was Brianna Looney with 13 points. Abbie Ramsey had 9, Kelsey Sexton 8, Shay Hatton 7, Maggie Caveness 6, Kaylee Davis 5, Tealllie Tatum 4 and Tia Billingsly 2.
Looney had 8 assists, 6 steals and 7 deflections. Ramsey had 6 rebounds. Sexton got 5 rebounds. Hatton had 6 rebounds. Caveness had 2 blocks. Tatum had 5 rebounds.
For the Maiden JV, Kennedi Musselman had 7 points, Mirayah Hatton 6, Ondreia Renfro 3 and Allona Butler and Mya Mitchell 2 each.
Standings for District 19-AA had Martins Mill at 10-0, LaPoynor at 8-2, Frankston 6-4 and Cross Roads 0-10. Kerens and Cayuga were tied for fourth with 3-7 records and were to play Monday, Feb. 8 to see who will be the fourth seed in the playoffs and meet District 20-AA leader Centerville in bi-district later in the week.
Martins Mill will play District 20-AA fourth seed Leon in their bi-district game.

Indians down Cross Roads 47-33
Feb. 5, eye two 19-AA top teams
The Frankston Indians Friday, Feb. 5 defeated the Cross Roads Bobcats 47-33 in a District 19-AA basketball contest at the FHS gym and face two top teams in upcoming games, according to a report by FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
The win boosted the Indians district record to 4-4 and their season mark to 9-13. The win for the fourth place Indians clinched a playoff spot, the Tribe coach said. They are scheduled to play District 20-AA champion Grapeland, No. 4 in AA, in bi-district on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at Palestine High School, the coach said.
The Indians outscored their opponent in three out of the four quarters, taking a first quarter lead of 15-7 and a halftime advantage of 26-15. They increased their lead to 40-20 at the end of the third quarter. Cross Roads had a 13-7 third quarter performance.
“We caused turnovers on the defensive end of the court that we converted into points,” Coach Albritton observed in analyzing the Indian victory.
Leading scorer for the Tribe was Brink Bizzell with 15, including two 3-pointers. He was 3 for 6 at the free throw line. Cael Bruno had 11 points and was 3 for 4 at the charity stripe. Caleb Ramsey rounded out the double figure scoring with 10 points, including a 3-pointer. He was 1 for 2 in free throws. Isaiah Allen had 7 points including a free throw in two tries. Kody Loebig and Ethan Lade each had 2 points.
The Indians close out their district and season schedule with two tough opponents. On Tuesday, Feb. 9, the LaPoynor Flyers come to the FHS gym for games starting at 5 p.m. Then on Friday, Feb. 12, Martins Mill, undefeated in district, will be at Frankston.

Maidens eye AA bi-district next week
after win over Cayuga girls on Feb. 2
The Frankston Maidens further clinched the third spot from District 19-AA in the playoffs with a 58-45 win over the Cayuga Lady Wildcats Tuesday, Feb. 2 at the FHS gym, according to a report from FHS Coach Christi Coker.
Coach Coker said it appears that the Maidens will be playing the District 20-AA second place team, either Grapeland or Lovelady, in the first round of the playoffs. That bi-district game will be played next week, either on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, she said.
The Maidens have one more district game to play. They journey to Cross Roads on Friday, Feb. 5. The junior varsity game will be at 5 p.m., followed at about 6:15 by the varsity contest.
Scoring for the Maidens against Cayuga were two players in double figures. Abbie Ramsey led with 24, including three 3-pointers, and Brianna Looney had l6. Kaylee Davis, Kelsey Sexton, Tia Billingsly and Maggie Caveness each had 4 points and Shay Hatton put in 2.
Looney had 10 steals. Billingsly had 5 assists and 8 steals and Caveness had 9 rebounds.

Indians play ‘good defense’ but
fall to Cayuga Wildcats 40-29
The Frankston Indians fell to Cayuga 40-29 in a District 19-AA game Tuesday, Feb. 2 to bring the district record to 3-4 and their season mark to 8-13, according to a report from FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
In a defensive game, the Indians had difficulty scoring, Coach Albritton said.
“We played real good defense, but could not get shots to fall,” he said.
The Tribe led 8-6 in the first quarter but at halftime Cayuga took the lead 19-14. Cayuga led 26-22 at the end of the third quarter and then had a big fourth quarter, outscoring the Indians 14-7.
Leading scorer for the Indians was Cael Bruno with 10. Benton Allen had 6, Isaiah Allen 5 and Caleb Ramsey and Brink Bizzell 4 each.

Maidens clinch playoffs spot, win
over Kerens 57-45 in ‘tough” test
The Frankston Maidens Friday, Jan. 29 clinched a spot in the Class AA girls basketball playoffs with a “big, tough” win over Kerens 57-45 on the road, according to a report from FHS Coach Christi Coker.
The Maidens Junior Varsity also won 33-25. They are now 9-5 overall. Their last game will be Friday, Feb. 5 at Cross Roads at 5 p.m.
The Maidens varsity now has a 4-4 district record and they are 12-7 for the season with only two games left in the season and in district play. They are in third place behind first place Martins Mill (8-0) and second place LaPoynor (6-2).
Leading scorer for the varsity was Abbie Ramsey with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Also in double figures was Tia Billingsly with 15 points. Brianna Looney and Shay Hatton each had 8 points. Maggie Caveness and Teallie Tatum had 4 points each and Kelsey Sexton scored 1 point.
Billingsly had 5 assists and 7 deflections. Looney had 6 rebounds. Caveness had 7 rebounds. Tatum had 5 rebounds and Sexton had 6 rebounds.

The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team Friday, Jan. 29 defeated the Kerens Bobcats 50-31in a District 19-AA contest at the FHS gym.
The win boosted the Tribe record to 3-3 in district and 8-12 on the season.
The Indians started out strong with a 16-2 lead in the first quarter and they led 29-18 at halftime. They went on to dominate the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 21-13.
Leading Indian scoring was Cael Bruno with 20 points, including a 3-pointer. He was 9 of 12 at the free throw line. Brink Bizzell had 9 points, including a 3-pointer. He was 2 for 2 at the charity stripe. Caleb Ramsey sank 8 points with a 3-pointer and a 3 for 3 free throw performance. Kody Loebig hit two 3-pointers for 6 points, Isaiah Allen had 4 points on one 3-pointer and a free throw. Benton Allen had 3 points on a field goal and a free throw.
The Indians will go to Cayuga on Tuesday, Feb. 2 and then host Cross Roads on Senior Night Friday, Feb. 5. They close out the district and season schedules with tough ones at home against LaPoynor on Feb. 9 and Martins Mill on Feb. 12, when it will be Senior Night.

Indians fall 56-35 to district leader
Martins Mill Jan. 26 in road contest
The Frankston Indians fell to top-ranked Martins Mill 56-35 on Tuesday, Jan. 26 in varsity basketball action on the road, according to a report from FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
Martins Mill jumped out to a 39-13 advantage at halftime. The Indians were able to narrow the score to 45-22 at the end of the third quarter, outscoring their opponent 9-6. They further narrowed the margin in the fourth with a 13-11 performance but it was not enough to overcome the big Martins Mill lead at halftime.
Leading scorer for the Indians was Kody Loebig with 8. Isaiah Allen had 7, Caleb Ramsey and Cael Bruno each had 5. Benton Allen and Brink Bizzell scored 4 each and Kason Newport had 2. Loebig had two 3-pointers and Isaiah Allen and Ramsey each had one. They also were both 2 for 4 at the free throw line. Bruno was 1 for 2 at the charity stripe.
The loss dropped the Indians’ district record to 2-3 and their season mark to 7-12. Martins Mill is 5-0 in district and 19-3 overall.
The Indians will be hosting Kerens on Friday, Jan. 29 when it is scheduled to be Little Dribblers Night. Junior varsity game will start at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity contest at about 7:45. Then on Tuesday, Feb. 2 they are scheduled to go to Cayuga for games starting at 5 p.m.

The Frankston Maidens varsity hosted state-ranked Martins Mill Tuesday, Jan. 26 at the FHS gym and were outscored 68-48, according to a report from FHS Coach Christi Coker.
The Martins Mill girls are currently ranked sixth in the state in Class AA and lead in District 19-AA with a 7-0 record. So far the Maidens’ only losses have been to Martins Mill and to LaPoynor, second with a 6-1 record, their only loss so far to Martins Mill.
Coach Coker said, “The Maidens played well in the first half and were only down one point at halftime. In the third quarter, Martins Mill got hot and scored 29 points.
“We played well with them for three quarters, but were out-scored in one,” the Maiden coach said.
Leading scorer for the Maidens was senior Abbie Ramsey with 15 points. She also pulled down 6 rebounds. Three Maidens had 6 points: Brianna Looney, Tia Billingsly and Kelsey Sexton. Three more had 4 points: Kaylee Davis, Teallie Tatum and Shay Hatton. Maggie Caveness scored one point and contributed 6 rebounds.
The Maidens go to Kerens for what Coach Coker called “a huge game” on Friday, Jan. 29. The Maidens and Kerens are currently tied for third in 19-AA with 3-4 records. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m. followed at about 6:15 by the varsity contest. The Maidens will meet Cayuga (2-5) at home on Tuesday, Feb. 2 in another “huge” game for district standings. JV contest is at 5 followed by the varsity game at about 6:15 p.m. at the FHS gym. Final season and district game will be at Cross Roads (0-7) on Feb. 5.

Indians fall to LaPoynor 71-48
Friday, Jan. 22 in 19-AA test
The Frankston Indians fell to the LaPoynor Flyers 71-48 Friday, Jan. 22 in District 19-AA basketball action at the Nichols-Corley Gym at LaPoynor School, according to a report from FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
The win for the Flyers boosted their season record to 16-4 and their district mark to 3-1. The Indians are now 2-2 in district and 8-10 for the season.
The Flyers jumped out to a 21-13 first quarter lead and were ahead 35-18 at halftime. In the second half the Indians picked up the pace, scoring 30 points while the Flyers scored 36 to build on their first half advantage.
Isaiah Allen led Indian scorers with 14 points, including one 3-pointer. Brink Bizzell scored 9 points, including two 3-pointers and a 3 for 4 showing at the free throw line. Kody Loebig and Caleb Ramsey each scored 10. Loebig had a 3-pointer and was 1-1 at the charity stripe. Benton Allen scored 5 points and Cael Bruno 2.
Cooper Gracey led LaPoynor scorers with 25, including two 3-pointers. DiJuan Whitehead also scored in double figures with 19. Kase Johnston had 9, including two 3-pointers. Garrett Nuckolls had 8, Jeff Young 6 and Matt Driskell and Evan Almeida 2 each.
LHS Coach Dean Nuckolls reported that Whitehead had 10 rebounds; Gracey 15 rebounds; Young 4 assists and 4 rebounds; Johnston 5 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 steals; Almeida 4 rebounds; Nuckolls 7 assists, 2 rebounds and 3 steals.
The Indians will face another challenge Tuesday, Jan. 26 when they go to Martins Mill for games starting at 5 p.m. The Flyers will go to Cayuga the same day to play the Wildcats starting at 5 p.m.

Lady Flyers defeat Maidens varsity
60-45, win over JV 49-25 on Jan. 22
The Frankston Maidens varsity lost to the LaPoynor Lady Flyers 60-45 on Friday, Jan. 22 at the FHS gym, according to Maidens Coach Christi Coker.
Earlier the Maidens junior varsity fell to the LaPoynor JV 49-25.
The Maiden varsity is now 11-6 for the season and 3-3 in District 19-AA, in third place behind Martins Mill and LaPoynor.
“We played well the first half, but in the third quarter, we struggled,” Coach Coker observed. “We missed 15 free throws for the night that hurt us.”
The two Maidens seniors led in scoring. Abbie Ramsey had 17 points, 7 steals and 6 deflections. Teallie Tatum had 8 points. Brianna Looney scored 6 points. Tia Billingsly and Shay Hatton each scored 4. Billingsly had 7 rebounds and 6 deflections. Hatton had 6 rebounds. Kaylee Davis, Maggie Caveness and Kelsey Sexton each score 2. Caveness had 10 rebounds.
Lady Flyer Coach Jammie Maze reported that four of his varsity players scored in double figures. Markayla Hurd had 16, Laura McClelland 15, Staci Whitehead 12 and Tmia Mitchell 11. Marissa Hurd had 5 points and Payton 1.
Whitehead had 1 assist, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Markayla Hurd had 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 block and 8 steals. Laci Davis had 1 assist and 3 rebounds. Payton had 5 rebounds. Mitchell had 7 rebounds and 5 steals. McClelland had 2 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Kitty Eldridge had 1 assist, 1 rebound and 2 steals.
Scoring for the Maiden JV were Mirayah Hatton with 11, Bandy Bizzell 7, Isabel Herbrough 3 and Ondreia Renfro and Kennedi Musselman 2 each.
The Lady Flyers are now 16-3 overall and 5-1 in district play.
The Maidens will be hosting first place Martins Mill on Tuesday, Jan. 26 with the varsity only game starting at 6 p.m. The Lady Flyers will be hosting Cayuga on the same day and time. On Friday, Jan. 29, the Maidens will be going to Kerens for games, JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at about 6:15. The Lady Flyers will go to Martins Mill for a varsity only game at 6 p.m.

Maidens end first round third in 19-AA,
top Cayuga 41-34, Cross Roads 53-15
The Frankston Maidens Tuesday, Jan. 19 closed out the first round of District 19-AA competition with a convincing 53-15 victory over the Cross Roads Lady Bobcats during Senior Night at the Frankston gymnasium, according to a report from FHS Coach Christi Coker.
Maiden seniors Abbie Ramsey (13) and Teallie Tatum (21) were honored prior to the varsity game.
The victory followed a close 13-11 victory by the Maiden junior varsity over their Cross Roads counterparts. They are now 8-3 overall for the season.
The Maidens’ varsity ended the first round with a 3-2 district record and a 11-5 season mark. The Maidens are in third place in the district behind Martins Mill (5-0) and LaPoynor (4-1). Kerens (2-3) is in fourth place, followed by Cayuga (1-4) and Cross Roads (0-5).
On Jan. 15, the Maidens won a “tough one” on the road against Cayuga 41-34 in varsity only competition.
Abbie Ramsey led scorers against Cross Roads with 17 points, 6 steals and 4 assists. Maggie Caveness had another double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds. Brianna Looney scored 8 points, had 7 steals and 4 assists. Teallie Tatum had 6 points, Tia Billingsly 5, Shay Hatton 3, Kelsey Sexton and Kaylee Davis 2 points each. Sexton also contributed 8 rebounds.
For the Maidens JV against Cross Roads, Bandy Bizzell had 5 points, Kennedi Musselman and Mirayah Hatton 3 each and Ondreia Renfro 2.
Against Cayuga, Ramsey led with 11 points. Caveness had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Billingsly had 7 and Sexton 6 with 10 rebounds. Shay Hatton scored 5 and Davis 2. Looney also had 2 points with 5 steals and 12 deflections on defense.

Indians dominate Cross Roads 65-29
to raise District 19-AA record to 2-1
The Frankston Indians won their second District 19-AA basketball game Tuesday, Jan. 19 by dominating Cross Roads 65-29 on the road.
The win gave the Indians a 2-1 district record. They are 7-10 overall for the season.
The Indians had four players in double figures and dominated the Cross Roads varsity in all four quarters.
After leading Cross Roads 11-6 in the first quarter, the Indians outscored their opponent 17-4 in the second quarter to take a 28-10 halftime lead. They cemented their lead with a 22-point performance in the third quarter while holding Cross Roads to only 7 points. The Bobcats scored 12 fourth quarter points but it was not nearly enough to offset the Indians’ 50-17 third quarter advantage and a 15-point Tribe showing in the fourth.
Leading scorer for the Indians was Cael Bruno with 17 including one 3-pointer. He sank 2 of 3 from the free throw line. Caleb Ramsey and Brink Bizzell each scored 12, each hitting one 3-pointer. Bizzell made 7 of 8 free throws and Ramsey was 1 for 1. Isaiah Allen hit 5 two-point field goals and was 1 for 2 at the free throw line for 11 points. In the fourth quarter, Ethan Lade scored 7 points and was 1 for 2 at the charity stripe. Benton Allen and Kason Newport each had 3 points, Allen with a field goal and a free throw and Newport with a 3-pointer.
Friday, Jan. 22, the Indians will go to LaPoynor to meet the formidable Flyers with games starting at 5 p.m. Then on Tuesday, Jan. 26 they meet another challenging foe when they journey to Martins Mill.

Cayuga second half surge defeats
Indians 56-52 in 19-AA contest
The Frankston Indians fell 56-52 in a “tough one” to the Cayuga Wildcats Friday, Jan 15 at the Frankston gym, according to a report from FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
The District 19-AA loss made the Indians 1-1 in district play after having won their district opener over Kerens in a close game 34-31. They are now 6-10 for the season.
The Indians held a close lead over Cayuga in the first half, leading 11-9 in the first period and 19-18 at halftime. However, Cayuga outscored the Indians 38-33 in the second half to take the win.
Cael Bruno led Indians scorers with 22 points, sinking two 3-pointers and 2 of 3 from the free throw line. Brink Bizzell was also in double figures with 14, including one 3-pointer and a free throw. Isaiah Allen and Caleb Ramsey had 5, Kody Loebig 4, and Benton Allen 2.
On Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Indians go to Cross Roads for games starting at 5 p.m. Then on Friday, Jan. 22, the Tribe must face a formidable LaPoynor team at the Nichols-Corley Gym at LaPoynor.

Maidens varsity, JV defeat Kerens

The Frankston Maidens varsity won a big district game 53-25 against Kerens Tuesday, Jan. 12 to improve their District 19-AA record to 1-2, according to a report by FHS Coach Christi Coker.
Earlier, the Maidens Junior Varsity defeated their Kerens counterparts 42-22.
Leading scorer for the Maiden varsity was Abbie Ramsey with 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Also in double figures was Maggie Caveness with 11. Brianna Looney scored 8 points and Tia Billingsly had 5. Kelsey Sexton and Shay Hatton each contributed 4 points to the cause. Kaylee Davis had 3 and Teallie Tatum 2 points.
Caveness not only scored in double figures but also had 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Looney had 4 steals and 7 rebounds. Billingsly had 7 assists and 6 rebounds. Sexton pulled down 10 rebounds.
In the JV game, Kennedi Musselman was high scorer with 12 points. Also in double figures was Mirayah Hatton with 11. Bandy Bizzell had 8, Trinity Coats 6 and Mya Mitchell and Kaitlyn Deupree had 2 each.. Ondreia Renfro had 1.
The Maidens travel to Cayuga Friday, Jan. 15 and will be at home on Tuesday, Jan. 19 against Cross Roads to end the first round of district play. At 6:15 p.m., following the JV game against Cross Roads, Senior Night will be observed with seniors recognized for their contributions.

Indians hold off Kerens to take 34-31
victory in District 19-AA cage opener
The Frankston Indians varsity started off District 19-AA play with a close 34-31 victory over the Kerens Bobcats Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Kerens, according to a report by FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.
The win gives the Indians a 1-0 district record and makes them 6-9 for the season.
The game was close in almost every quarter. The Indians led 7-5 in the first period and had a 17-11 lead at halftime. Kerens tried a comeback in the second half, outscoring the Indians 20-17 but the Tribe held on to preserve the three point win.
Isaiah Allen led Indian scorers with 13 points, including two 3-pointers and was 1 for 2 at the free throw line. Cael Bruno was also in double figures with 10 points. He sank two free throws on two tries. Brink Bizzell was also perfect at 2 for 2 at the charity line and scored 4 points. Kody Loebig had 3, thanks to one 3-pointer. Caleb Ramsey and Benton Allen each had 2, Ramsey sinking 2 free throws in two tries and Allen with a single field goal.

Strong Martins Mill team defeats
Maidens 52-21 in 19-AA contest
The Frankston Maidens faced another 19-AA top team Friday, Jan. 8 and came away falling to the Martins Mill varsity girls 52-21, according to a report by FHS Coach Christi Coker.
With a not so enviable circumstance of facing two of the top pre-season favorites in their first two district games, the Maidens are now 0-2 in district play. They still get another chance against both teams later, however.
“We started out strong,” Coach Coker said, “but the second half hurt us.”
The coach said Martins Mill could not miss in the third quarter “and we could not score in the fourth”. She said the Maidens only hit 1 of 10 free throws also.
Abbie Ramsey led Maiden scorers with 11 points. Tia Billingsly and Shay Hatton had 3 each and Brianna Looney and Maggie Caveness each scored 2.

Indians win last two games after
falling in two others after break
The Frankston Indians have come out of the Holiday break with a 2-2 won-loss record, winning their last two games.
The Indians defeated Alto 49-33 on Jan. 5 and Neches 58-34 on Jan. 8 after having earlier losses to Lovelady 49-36 on Dec. 29 and Carlisle 53-31 on Dec. 30.
The Indians are now 5-8 for the season, going into District 19-AA play against Kerens on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Against Neches, Brink Bizzell led scorers with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Caleb Ramsey and Cael Bruno were in double figures, each with 13 points. Ramsey had two 3-pointers and Bruno three. Benton Allen had 4 points and Isaiah Allen, Kason Newport and Kody Loebig each had 3. Austin Carr and Ethan Lade each scored 2.
Leading scorer against Alto was Bruno with 16 followed by Isaiah Allen with 11, including two 3-pointers. Loebig had 8 with two 3-pointers, Bizzell 7 and Benton Allen 6. Ramsey had 1.
In the Carlisle game, Ramsey had 11 with three 3-pointers. Isaiah Allen had 7 with one three-pointer. Newport had 6 points on two 3-pointers. Loebig got 3 points on a single 3-pointer. Benton Allen and Lade each got 2 points.
Against Lovelady, Isaiah Allen led with 13 points, getting 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Ramsey had 11 with 3 of 4 free throws. Newport had 10 with two three-pointers and was 2 for 2 at the charity stripe. Benton Allen had 2 points on a field goal.
The Kerens games on Tuesday, Jan. 12 are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at Kerens. Then on Friday, Jan. 15, the Indians host Cayuga in games scheduled at 5 p.m.

Maidens’ effort praised, but fall 65-49
to formidable LaPoynor Lady Flyers
The Frankston Maidens Tuesday, Jan. 5 fell to the LaPoynor Lady Flyers 65-49 in their District 19-AA opener, according to a report from FHS Coach Christi Coker.
“I was Super Proud of how hard the girls played,” Coach Coker said. “They played really hard. We just didn’t get the win.”
The Maidens coach said the team “had a slow start scoring and missed 21 free throws”.
Abbie Ramsey was leading scorer for the Maidens with 14 points, followed by 10 points by Brianna Looney. Maggie Caveness matched her season high with 9 points. Tia Billingsly and Kelsey Sexton each had 5 points. Shay Hatton got 4 and Teallie Tatum 2.
Besides noting her 9-point performance, Coach Coker praised Caveness for a “great game”, contributing 16 rebounds and several blocks to the Maiden effort. Billingsly had 12 rebounds and 4 assists and “several hustle plays”, the coach reported.
LHS Coach Jammie Maze reported Staci Whitehead had 17 points, Markayla Hurd 12, Tmia Mitchell 11, Kitty Eld/ridge 8, Laci Davis 6, Laura McClellan 5, Laney Almon 4 and Marissa Hurd 2.
Whitehead had 11 rebounds, 3 blocks and 5 steals. Eldridge had 2 assists, 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Mitchell had 6 rebounds. Davis had 4 rebounds and 2 steals. McClelland had 3 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Markayla Hurd had 6 assists and 6 steals.
The Maidens were to journey to take on another formidable district opponent, Martins Mill, on Friday, Jan. 8. The varsity game is to start at 6 p.m. They return to the familiar confines of the FHS gym for another district test against Kerens on Tuesday, Jan. 12. The junior varsity contest is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at about 6:15 p.m.

Maidens defeat Leon on Dec. 30
after losses to Tyler Heat Dec. 29
The Frankston Maidens defeated Leon Wednesday, Dec. 30 and both the varsity and the junior varsity came away with wins, according to a report by Coach Christi Coker.
The varsity defeated their Leon counterparts 55-37. That game was scheduled on an open date on the Maidens’ schedule.
Their win came after having lost to Tyler Heat 46-37 in a non-district home game on Tuesday, Dec. 29. They had defeated the Heat in an earlier game 36-27. The Maiden JV lost to the Heat in overtime 29-20.
Scoring leader for the Maidens varsity against Leon was Abbie Ramsey with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Brianna Looney added 12 points. Maggie Caveness, Tia Billingsly and Kelsey Sexton had 5 each and Kaylee Davis and Shay Hatton each scored 4.
In the earlier game with Tyler Heat, Ramsey led with 12 points, including three 3-pointers. Billingsly had 8, Looney 6, Hatton 5, Caveness 3, Teallie Tatum 2 and Davis 1.
Scoring for the JV against the Heat were Trinity Coats with 6, Mirayah Hatton 5, and Allona Butler 3. Ondreia Renfro, KK Deupree and Mya Mitchell had 2 each.
The Maiden varsity is 5-3 in non-district play.

Indians fall to Timpson 61-59
in close non-district test here
The Frankston Indians and the Timpson Bears played it close for most of the game and at the end, the Bears came out as the winners 61-59 in a non-district cliff-hanger at the FHS gym Friday night, Dec. 18, according to a report by Coach Scotty Albritton.
Frankston led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter but the Bears took the lead at halftime 26-25. Then in the third quarter, the Bears scored 23 points to 16 for the Indians and led 49-41. The Indians came back to outscore Timpson 18-12 in the final quarter, but it was not quite enough to take the win.
The Indians hit 16 of 22 free throws for 73 percent and were good on 17 two-point field goals, and the Bears had 18 two-pointers but hit five three-point field goals to three for the Indians, despite connecting on only 10 of 20 for 50 percent at the charity line.
Scoring for the Indians were Brink Bizzell with 17, K.J. Hawkins with 13, Caleb Ramsey 11, Kody Loebig 9, Kason Newport 5 and Benton Allen 4.
The loss made the Indians’ season record, so far against non-district foes at 3-7.
The Indians will not play again until after Christmas. On Tuesday, Dec. 29, they go to Lovelady for a 1 p.m. JV start scheduled. Then, the following day, Wednesday, Dec. 30 they host Carlisle with JV action scheduled to begin at noon.

over Joaquin in games Dec. 15
The Frankston Maidens varsity and junior varsity basketball teams scored victories over Joaquin in non-district action Tuesday, Dec. 15.
The JV defeated their Joaquin counterparts 26-17 and the varsity won over Joaquin 54-37.
Scoring for the JV were Mirayah Hatton with 14 points, Kennedi Musselman and Isabel Herbrough with 4 each and Abigail Fletcher and Allona Butler with 2 each.
For the varsity, Abbie Ramsey led scorers with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Maggie Caveness had 9, Shay Hatton 8, Tia Billingsly 5, Kaylee Davis 4 and Brianna Looney, Jacey Dillard, and Kelsey Sexton with 2 each.

in non-district contest on Dec. 15
The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team fell to Troup Tigers 40-31 Tuesday, Dec. 15 in action at the FHS gym.
The Tigers’ win came after the Indians had narrowly defeated them 47-44 on their home court on Friday, Dec. 11.
Scoring for the Indians were Cael Bruno with 16, Caleb Ramsey with 9 and Kody Loebig with 6 points.
The loss made the Indian record 3-6 in non-district play so far this season.
The Indians led 7-5 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 14-12 at halftime. The two teams were tied 23-23 at the end of the third quarter but Troup caught fire in the fourth quarter scoring 17 points to only 8 for the Tribe to take the win.

Maidens varsity, JV sweep games
here against Tyler Heat, All Saints
The Frankston Maidens varsity basketball team increased their season record to 6-2 in games on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11 and 12 and the junior varsity took an overtime win to raise their record to 4-1, according to a report by Coach Christi Coker.
On Friday, the Maidens hosted the Tyler Heat. The junior varsity first won over their Heat counterparts 25-20 in overtime. Then the Maiden varsity won a “tough one” over the Heat varsity 36-27.
The next day, Saturday, Dec. 12, the varsity hosted All Saints of Tyler and won big 68-23.
For the JV against Tyler Heat, Mirayah Hatton led scorers with 9 points. Trinity Coats had 5. Allona Butler and Isabel Herbrough each had 4 and Bandy Bizzell scored 3.
Later, the varsity was led against the Heat with Abbie Ramsey’s 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Tia Billingsly had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Shay Hatton added 3 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Maggie Caveness had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Brianna Looney, Teallie Tatum and Kelsey Sexton each scored 2 points. Kaylee Davis helped the cause with 3 steals.
The next day, Hatton led all scoring for the varsity against All Saints with 15 points and she pulled down 9 rebounds. Ramsey sank 12 points, had 7 steals and 7 assists. Billingsly added to the double figures with 11 points. Looney contributed with 8 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals. Davis also had 8 points, Sexton 6 and Tatum 4. Caveness scored 2 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and Jacey Dillard score 2 and had 9 rebounds.

Indians defeat Troup, Beckville
in Dec. 11-12 non-district play
The Frankston Indians came away from the weekend with two wins in non-district road games, one against the Troup Tigers 47-44 on Friday, Dec. 11 and against Beckville 36-33 on Saturday, Dec. 12, according to a report from Coach Scotty Albritton.
The Indians are now 3-5 in the season so far, showing some improvement from a slow start, prompted by a late start at practice due to the extended football season. They have won three out of their last four games.
Against Troup, Coach Albritton said, “We played a great game defensively and were patient on offense to get open shots.” The coach said the Indians started off a little slow on offense “until we figured out how to play against their match-up zone” defense.
“With one minute left in the game, we took a 10–point lead, only to see it diminish to 3,” the coach said.
He said that defensively, “we were able to take them away from what they like to do and that is to run the floor.
“This was a very intense game by both teams on the defensive end of the floor,” according to the coach.
Cael Bruno led scorers with 21 points. K.J. Hawkins had 14 and Kody Loebig 12.
In the Beckville game, Coach Albritton said, “We got off to a very slow start, probably due to such a tough game the night before against Troup.” The coach said the Indians were able to manage only one field goal in the first half.
The Indians began a comeback in the second half when the offense started making plays and shots, the coach said. Also he said, the Indians made enough plays defensively to get the win.
Bruno was the leading scorer in the Beckville game with 13 points. Brink Bizzell and Caleb Ramsey each got 8 and Hawkins sank 7 points.

Maidens varsity, JV lose non-district
contests to Central Heights on Dec. 8
The Frankston Maidens varsity and junior varsity basketball teams lost to Central Heights Tuesday, Dec. 8 in non-district action at the FHS gym.
The junior varsity fell 45-25 and the varsity lost in a close game 49-40.
The Maiden varsity has a 4-2 record overall and the JV is 3-1 so far.
Scoring for the JV were Bandy Bizzell with 7, Isabel Herbrough 5, Trinity Coats 4, Mya Mitchell 3 and Mirayah Hatton, Ondreia Renfro and Kennedi Musselman had 2 each.
For the varsity, Abbie Ramsey led scorers with 19 and had 2 assists. Teallie Tatum had 6 points and 8 rebounds. Kaylee Davis had 4 points. Tia Billingsley scored 3 points and had 6 steals. Brianna Looney, Maggie Caveness, Kelsey Loebig and Kelsey Sexton each scored 2. Caveness had 14 rebounds, and Sexton 8.
The Maidens teams will host Tyler Heat at 5 and 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec.11. Then on Saturday, Dec. 12 there will be a varsity game only at the FHS gym at noon against All Saints Tyler.

Tribe tops New Summerfield 45-30,
falls to Huntington despite late rally
The Frankston Indians dominated New Summerfield 45-30 on Saturday, Dec. 5 but fell to Huntington 54-49 on Tuesday, Dec. 8, despite an inspired attempt at a comeback in the second half. Both were road games.
Coach Scotty Albritton said the Indians jumped out to an early lead against New Summerfield and “never looked back”.
“The guys played with great defensive intensity,” he said. “They extended the lead in the second half up to 22.”
In the game against Huntington, the Indians got off to a slow start, the coach said.
“We fell behind by as many as 22 points (35-13) with 50 seconds left in the half,” he said. “We cut the lead to 16 before the half, 35-19.”
Coach Albritton said, “The second half was a different story.”
The coach said the Indians came out after the intermission and played “great defense” and were able to make some shots that would not fall in the first half.
With two minutes left in the game, the Tribe cut the Huntington lead to three points, 49-46, Coach Albritton said.
“We missed a couple of shots that would have tied the game, but the effort and intensity that we played to come back was great to see,” the coach observed.
“That type of effort is what can spark a team,” the coach said.
In the New Summerfield game, Cael Bruno led with 27 points. Kody Loebig and Caleb Ramsey each sank 5 points. K.J. Hawkins had 4 and Brink Bizzell and Kason Newport each had 2.
Against Huntington, Bruno had 23 points to lead again and Hawkins helped the cause with 13 points. Loebig had 5 points and Ramsey and Bizzell each had 3. Ethan Lade added 2 points to round out the Indian scoring.
The Indians are scheduled to go to Troup on Friday, Dec. 11 for a 5 p.m. start.
Then on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. they have another road game at Beckville. They return to the familiar FHS gym on Wednesday, Dec. 15 to host Troup.

Maidens varsity, JV sweep games
against Slocum, Neches Dec. 4-5
The Frankston Maidens varsity and junior varsity basketball teams swept all their games over the weekend, including a close varsity game with Neches on Saturday, Dec. 5.
Coach Christi Coker reports that the Maiden varsity defeated Slocum 46-43 after the Maiden JV had won 16-8 on Friday, Dec. 4 in games at Slocum.
Then on Saturday, the Maidens varsity won over Neches, in a close one, 45-42 after the JV had defeated their Neches counterparts 19-13 at the FHS gym.
The Maiden varsity has a 4-1 record overall and the JV is 3-0 so far.
In the Slocum game, Tia Billingsly led Maiden scorers with 11 points. She also had six steals and five rebounds. Kelsey Sexton had 9 points. Brianna Looney had 8 and six rebounds. Shay Hatton got 7 points and Abbie Ramsey had 6 and four assists. Teallie Tatum scored 3 points and Maggie Caveness 2 with eight rebounds.
For the Maiden JV against Slocum, Mirayah Hatton scored 7 points and Bandy Bizzell 5. Kennedi Musselman and Ondreia Renfro scored 2 each.

On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Maidens teams host Central Heights at 5 and 6:15 p.m. On Friday, Dec. 11, they host Tyler Heat at 5 and 6:15 p.m. The following day, Saturday, Dec. 12, there will be a varsity game only at t he FHS gym at noon against All Saints Tyler.

Maidens defeat Troup 47-36
in non-district basketball test
The Frankston Maidens Tuesday, Dec. 1 resumed their basketball season with a 47-36 victory over the Troup Lady Tigers in a non-district home game at the FHS gym.
Tia Billingsly led the Maidens with 18 points and Abbie Ramsey had 15. Shay Hatton scored 6 points, Teallie Tatum 4 and Brianna Looney and Jacey Dillard 2 each.
Shay Hatton led in rebounds with 6. Maggie Caveness, Ramsey, Billingsly Tatum and Dillard each had 4. Kelsey Sexton and Looney had 3 each. Ramsey and Billingsly each had 4 assists. Ramsey had 5 steals.
The win boosted the Maidens' record to 2-1 against non-district foes.
The Maidens play at Slocum on Friday, Dec. 4 with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:15. Then on Saturday, Dec. 5, the Maidens will play at home against Neches. The JV game starts at 1:30 p.m. and the varsity contest at 2:45 p.m.

Westwood downs Tribe
48-31 in basketball test
Palestine Westwood defeated the Frankston Indians 48-31 Tuesday, Dec. 1 in their fourth non-district basketball game.
The Indians were still progressing from a late start at practice, thanks partly to an extended football season.
Two players who had not been in previous lineups were on hand to help the Tribe effort, but they too were hindered by a late start.
Brink Bizzell, recovered from an injury, returned to the lineup and led in scoring with 7 points for the Indians during the game. Caleb Ramsey, Cael Bruno and Kody Loebig, each scored 6 points. Benton Allen had 4 and K.J. Hawkins had 2.
Three Indians had 5 rebounds. They were Ramsey, Bruno and Hawkins. Austin Carr pulled down 4.
On Saturday, Dec. 5 the Indians go to New Summerfield for a 12 p.m. start. They will not return to the familiar confines of the FHS gym until Dec. 15 when they host Troup.

Tribe falls to Elkhart
in action on Nov. 23
The Frankston Indians varsity fell to the Elkhart Elks 40-34 Monday, Nov. 23 in their third non-district basketball game of the season.
The Indians are still trying to progress after a late beginning of basketball practice, as some of them were still active in the football playoffs as late as Nov. 12.
Leading scorer was Caleb Ramsey with 9 points. Cael Bruno had 7, Austin Carr and Isaiah Allen 5 each, K.J. Hawkins 4 and Kason Newport and Kaymon Davis with 2 points each.
The Indians will continue play on Tuesday, Dec. 1 when they journey to play Palestine Westwood. Action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Rusk Eagles defeat Indians Nov. 20
39-33 in second basketball contest
The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team lost 39-33 to the Rusk Eagles Friday, Nov. 20 in their second non-district game of the season.
The Indians are now 0-2 for the season, having fallen in their opener 54-36 to Bullard.
The Rusk game comes in about a week after the Indian football team ended its season in in a bi-district game with Timpson and some of its players had to make the transition to basketball.
Leading scorer for the Indians was Caleb Ramsey with 9 points. K.J. Hawkins had 8 and Cael Bruno 7. Austin Carr scored 6 points and Isaiah Allen 3.
The Indians are scheduled to play Elkhart at the FHS gym Monday, Nov. 23. Junior varsity game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., followed by the varsity contest. games.

Indian varsity falls to Bullard
by 54-36 in non-district action
The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team fell to the Bullard Panthers Tuesday, Nov. 17 in their season opener 54-36.
Some of the players had been involved in the football playoffs as late as Nov. 12 and had been working out for basketball for less than a week.
Leading scorer for the Indians was Cael Bruno with 17 points. Caleb Ramsey had 10, Isaiah Allen 5 and K.J. Hawkins and Tripp Hallmark each had 2 points.

Maidens’ ‘great shooting’ wins
over Palestine Westwood 69-11
The Frankston Maidens varsity Tuesday, Nov. 10 displayed great shooting as they defeated the Palestine Westwood Lady Panthers 66-11 in a non-district basketball contest at the FHS gym, according to a report by Coach Christi Coker.
The win gave the Maidens a 1-1 record in their second game of the 2020-21 season.
Scoring for the Maidens were Abbie Ramsey with 16 points and Tia Billingsley and Brianna Looney 10 each. Shay Hatton had 9 points. Maggie Caveness, Kelsey Sexton and Kaylee Davis had 6 each. Kelsey Loebig, TeallieTatum and Jacey Dillard had 2 each.
Caveness led in rebounds with 8 and Davis led with 6 assists..
Coach Coker said she is “looking forward to a great and exciting season as long as this COVID will stay away.
“This group of girls have a great attitude and work hard every day,” the coach said. “They are a joy to be around and coach.”
Coach Coker said the Maidens have a majority of last year’s team back. She said Ramsey, Tatum and Loebig are the seniors; Billingsley, Looney, Sexton and Caveness are returning juniors; Sophomore Ja’shalyn Hatton is back. New on the team is freshman Kaylee Davis, “who we expect great things from this year” and sophomore Jacey Dillard, “who will help us out at the post area,” the veteran Maiden coach and former FHS standout, said.
According to the coach, Martins Mill and LaPoynor are the favorites in district competition and Frankston, Kerens, Cayuga and Cross Roads will be competing to get into the Class AA playoffs.

Maidens JV, varsity split at Athens
in 20-21 season basketball openers
The Frankston Maidens junior varsity defeated their Athens counterparts 29-19 Saturday, Nov. 7, but the Maiden varsity lost to the Athens Lady Hornets varsity 60-45 in season openers in non-district basketball play at Athens.
Scoring for the JV were Bandy Bizzell and Mariyah Hatton with 7 points each, Abigail Fletcher with 6, Kennedi Musselman 5 and Trinity Coats 4.
For the varsity, Abbie Ramsey had 15, Maggie Caveness and Tia Billingsley 8 each, Brianna Looney 5, Kelsey Sexton 4, Kaylee Davis and Teallie Tatum 2 each and Shay Hatton 1.
On Tuesday, Nov. 10, the Maiden varsity will host Palestine Westwood starting at 5 p.m. Then on Friday, Nov. 13, they go to Arp for a 5 p.m. matchup.
