Tribe closes out ‘great season’ going

1-2  to Beckville in bi-district round

The Frankston Indians Saturday, May 8 forged an 8-4 victory in the second game of the Class AA Bi-district series with Beckville, but they needed a win in the third game after losing in the first game 13-7.

Unfortunately for the Tribe, Beckville stymied the Indian offense and cranked up their own offense to advance to  Area with a 13-1 victory.

The Indians went into the playoffs as second seed after finishing District 20-AA in second place at 12-2, praised by their fans for a “great season”.

According to the Frankston team scorer, the Indians put together eight hits and took advantage of two Beckville errors to claim victory in Game 2. Frankston pitching held the opponent to six hits.

In the Game 2 win, Frankston got on the scoreboard taking a 3-1 lead in the second inning, adding another run in the third. Beckville came back to score two in the fourth to narrow the Tribe lead to 4-3, but the Indians answered ,with two runs in the top of the fifth to make it 6-3. Beckville answered with a run in their half of the fifth to make the score 6-4, but that was all they could muster. Frankston added two runs in the top of the seventh to cement an 8-4 win.

A double each by Ryan Harper and Brink Bizzell along with three singles by Austin Carr led the way. Kody Loebig contributed two singles and Harper added a single to round out the Tribe hitting. Harper and Bizzell each had three RBI and Loebig one.

Clayton Merritt pitched five innings, allowing the four runs on five hits, struck out five and walked three. Walker London and Matt Metzig split duty on the last two innings, allowing no runs and only one hit.

The picture was quite different in the third game as the Indians were able to get only three hits while Beckville was getting 12. The Indians made only one error but the four errors by Beckville didn’t seem to help the Tribe cause much. The result was a 13-1 win.

After a break, the third game began and Beckville jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 2 ½ innings. Frankston answered with their only run as Jared Cook was driven home by an RBI from Metzig. Meanwhile Beckville was to pad their lead in the top of the fifth with eight runs to secure their 13-1 victory and trip to the Area round of the playoffs.

Jace Benson pitched 2 ⅔ innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and striking out two. Metzig came in for 1 ⅔ innings, allowing three hits and six runs and striking out three. Robert Walker pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits and struck out one.

Maidens fall to McLeod in final

two games of Area playoff series

The Frankston Maidens softball team saw their hopes of winning the Area Class AA series against McLeod fade away on Friday, May 7 as they were shut out 5-0 in the second game of the series and outscored in the third and deciding game 9-5, according to information provided by Coach Sunni Adair.

The Maidens performed their magic in the first game of the series 2-1 on Wednesday, May 5, thanks to a deciding RBI single by Kaylee Davis which scored Brianna Looney from third.

Things didn’t go that well against McLeod in the second game, one which could have brought the FHS girls and their hopeful fans home early and advanced them to Regionals.

When McLeod took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second and made it 2-0 in the bottom of the third, all was not lost. After all, there were four more innings left to get the Maiden bats stringing together hits and runs. Two innings passed and Frankston still didn’t have an RBI. They still could not score in the top of the sixth.

Unfortunately for the Maidens, McLeod used their half of the sixth to score three runs to push their lead to 5-0. The Maidens had one more chance to perform their magic in the top of the seventh, but it was not to be. McLeod had forced a third and deciding game.

Frankston got seven hits in that second game. McLeod only had 8 but they had a couple of key doubles to go with a string of singles which drove in the five winning runs. Frankston’s Kasity Staines had gone 2 for 3 at the plate, both singles. Kelsey Sexton, Coralyn Happel, Jacey Dillard, Eryn Pryor and Julianna Gould each had singles but McLeod pitching wouldn’t allow any of those hits to pay off.

Staines went the distance in the pitching circle for the Maidens. Neither team committed an error.

All was still not lost for the Maidens. They could still win the third game and take the series, thanks to their first game victory on Wednesday, May 5.

Maiden bats were more effective in this game, but so were McLeod’s. The Maidens had nine hits, but McLeod had 16, including two home runs and a double by pitcher Cross, who went 4 for 4 at the plate and drove in four runs.

Things stayed close in early going with the two teams tied at 1-1 after two innings. Then in the third, McLeod went ahead 2-1 and scored two more in the fourth to stretch their lead to 4-1. The Maidens made it close, adding two runs in the fifth. Going into the sixth, it was 4-3 but McLeod used the top of the sixth to score two more runs and extend their lead to 6-3. The Maidens were unable to score in the bottom of the sixth and McLeod drove in three more runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 9-3.

It wasn’t the first time the Maidens had been up against the wall in the bottom of the seventh. However, the two runs they were able to get in their half of the seventh weren’t enough and McLeod had their 9-5 win and a trip to Regionals.

For the Maidens, Kaylee Davis went 2 for 3 at the plate with one RBI and a run and Happel was 2 for 4 with a run. Abigail Fletcher’s triple drove in a run. Pryor’s and Sexton’s only hits were doubles which drove in runs. Staines and Looney each had singles, with an RBI and a run, respectively. Fletcher and Gould scored runs.

Staines went the distance in the pitching circle. Cross pitched all the way for McLeod.

Maidens perform more 7th inning

magic over McLeod 2-1 in Game 1

The Frankston Maidens must have liked how they won over Overton April 30 with a winning single in the seventh inning of Bi-district play.

They did it again! This time it was a single by freshman Kaylee Davis who drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh against McLeod, breaking a 1-1 tie and earning a 2-1 victory in Game 1 of the Area playoff series played at Spring Hill High School Wednesday, May 5, according to information provided  by FHS Coach Sunni Adair.

Davis’ RBI scored Brianna Looney from third. Looney had just tripled to land in scoring position.

The two teams had battled it out from the pitching mound for the first three innings, neither one being able to score, but in the top of the fourth McLeod went ahead 1-0 thanks to a home run. However, Kasity Staines had an answer in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to tie things at 1-1, Davis scoring from third after a triple earlier..

For 2 ½ more innings, neither team could break the tie, until the bottom of the seventh when Davis did her thing, driving in the winning run.

Frankston had outhit the McLeod team 11-7. Besides the winning single, Davis had slammed a triple earlier to go 2 for 4 at the plate. Brianna Looney had another triple, also 2 for 4. Jacey Dillard added a double in her 3 for 3 at bat. Staines’ only single yielded a tying RBI. Other singles came from Coralyn Happel, Eryn Pryor and Julianna Gould.

The Maidens were errorless in the field. First baseman Pryor led the team with 11 chances.

Staines did yeoman duty on the mound, pitching the distance, facing 27 batters.

The Maidens have a chance to wrap things up and go to Regional on Friday, May 7 when they test McLeod again at 5 p.m. on the Spring Hill field. If another game is needed, it will follow 30 minutes after Game 2.

Indians fall to Beckville late inning

surge 13-7 in first of 3-game series

The Frankston Indians fell victim to an eight-run fifth inning surge by Beckville Wednesday night, May 5 and could not recover in the first game of a best-of-three Bi-district series played at Rusk High School, according to information from the team scorer.

The Tribe lost 13-7 to the Beckville nine and must win the next two games in order to advance to Area playoff competition. The second game is scheduled for Saturday, May 8 at 4:30 p.m. at Rusk. If the Indians win that game, they will play a third and deciding game 30 minutes after the second game.

The Indians appeared to be in trouble in the top of the first inning when Beckville scored four runs and took a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.

However, the Indians came up with a 6-run burst which sent them ahead 6-4 going into the second inning. They held off Beckville in the top of the second and added another run in their half of the inning to take a 7-4 lead.

Tribe pitching was able to hold off Beckville until that fateful fifth inning surge when the Indians’ opponents regained a lead, 12-7. The Indians were unable to recover. Beckville added another run in the top of the seventh to cement a 13-7 victory.

Beckville put together 10 hits in the contest, including two doubles and a home run and the Tribe had seven, all singles. The Indians committed one error and Beckville had two.

Hitting for the Indians were Jace Benson with two and Ryan Harper, Brink Bizzell, Walker London, Robert Walker and Austin Carr each contributing a single. Harper drove in two runs in the first inning. Matt Metzig, Walker, Benson, Carr and Kody Loebig each had RBIs for the Tribe.

The Indians used three pitchers in the contest. Benson started and was relieved by Walker London who went five innings. Robert Walker pitched the final two for the Indians.

Maidens softball team stuns Overton

14-13 with key Sexton 7th inning RBI

The 20-AA third seed Frankston Maidens (11-8, 8-4)  advanced to the Area round of the Class AA playoffs late Friday, April 30 with a stunning seventh inning finish over 19-AA Overton 14-13 at Grand Saline, according to a report made available by Coach Sunni Adair.

The late night contest turned into a nail-biter as the two teams battled to a 13-13 tie in the Maidens’ bottom of the seventh inning. Both teams had hit the ball well. Overton had tallied 20 hits and the Maidens ended up with 19 in the contest.

Coach Adair said the deciding play came when Kelsey Sexton singled in a run in that seventh inning to end the contest and the previous tie.

The scene was set in the game when Frankston, trailing 13-8, had scored five runs in their half of the seventh to tie things up. Sexton went to the plate having gone 2 for 4 up to that point with one RBI. Her key RBI single upped her performance for the night to 3 for 5 and two RBIs and secured the Maidens victory.

The victory sets up a playoff meeting with 18-AA first seed McLeod (14-4,9-0) in a best-of-three series at  Spring Hill High School. Game 1 will be Wednesday, May 5 at 6 p.m. Game 2 will be on Friday, May 7 at 5 p.m. with a third game to follow if needed.

The Maidens had defeated Overton in the first game of the series 3-1 on Wednesday, April 28. The series was hampered by the threat of wet weather, causing the first game to be re-scheduled from Thursday, April 29. The second game was moved from Frankston to a 9 p.m. April 30 meeting at Grand Saline, also due to weather concerns.

Freshman Kaylee Davis’ performance at the plate helped the Maidens’ stay in contention to the end. She went 2 for 3 and drove in four big runs along the way, thanks to two triples. Kasity Staines went 3 for 4, including a double, and she drove in three runs. Jacey Dillard also had three RBIs, going 2 for 4 at the plate.

Other Maidens contributing to the score were Coralyn Happel with two triples in four at-bats and an RBI, and Julianna Gould with three singles and a RBI in four trips to the plate. Brianna Looney went 2 for 4 on singles and Eryn Pryor and Abigail Fletcher each had singles to round out the hitting.

Both teams were errorless in the field.

Frankston started things out with a 1-0 first inning lead,  but Overton came back strong in the third inning, scoring eight runs. The Maidens scored four in the bottom of the third to narrow the Overton lead to 8-5, but the Lady Mustangs scored two more in their half of the fourth to increase their lead to 10–5. Frankston scored a run in the fifth, but Overton answered with three more in the sixth to make it 13-6. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth for Frankston made it 13-8, going into the  deciding seventh inning.

Overton was held scoreless in the top of the seventh, clinging to what appeared to be a safe 5-run lead as the Maidens came to bat. However, Frankston scored five runs to tie things up, before Sexton performed her heroics and drove in the run to give the Maidens their 14-13 victory and a trip the the Area playoffs.
