Bandy Bizzell competes in State

2A golf for second straight year

Frankston’s Bandy Bizzell went to the 2A Girls State Tournament for the second straight year as second medalist from Region III and competed among a strong field of individual golfers from all four 2A regions on May 16-17 in Austin, according to a report from Coach Scotty Albritton.

Coach Albritton said Bandy shot an 89 on the first day, May 16, to be tied for eighth place and shot a 100 on the second day to finish 18th overall among 71 individual qualifiers from all over the state in Class 2A.

Accompanying her to state was the District 19-2A and Region III individual champion Mia Nixon, a Martins Mill senior, who won the state championship for the third time, missing only in her sophomore year, because there was no state tournament due to COVID-19, Coach Albritton said. Nixon shot a 69 on day 1 and a 67 on day 2,  to claim the championship again, the coach said.

Two Indians, Tribe coach get top

honors in 20-2A All-District list

Two Frankston Indians baseball players and their Coach Wes King, bi-district champions, were selected as superlatives on the 2022 All-District honors from District 20-AA, according to a list released during the week of May 16.

Senior pitcher and infielder Clayton Merritt was chosen as Most Valuable Player in the district selections. Robert Walker, junior infielder, was Offensive Player of the Year.

Coach King was named Coach of the Year as he guided the Indians to a tie for first place in the district, first seed in the 2A playoffs and Bi-District Champions.

Other Frankston players were chosen for First or Second Team.

Junior Walker London, pitcher; juniors Matt Metzig and Austin Carr, infielders; and sophomore Ryan Harper, outfield, were named to the First Team.

Chosen for the Second Team were sophomore Conlan Lemay, outfield, and junior Jared Cook, catcher. Sophomore Tripp Hallmark was named Utility Player and sophomore Walker McCann was chosen as Designated Hitter.

Several LaPoynor players were chosen on the First and Second Team.

Junior Karson Rhoades, pitcher; sophomore Rustin Pittman, infield; senior Austin Majors, outfield; and senior Blaine Musselman, catcher, were honored on the First Team.

On the Second Team from LaPoynor were junior Kasen Reynolds, pitcher; sophomore Jayden Manken, infield; and junior Corbin Moeller, outfield.

Other district superlatives chosen were junior Trayton Spivey of Kerens and senior Austin Alexander of Martins Mill, Pitcher of the Year; and junior Nic Woolverton of Cayuga and junior Danny Conklin of Kerens, Defensive Player of the Year. Named Newcomers of the Year were freshmen Kannon and Krayton Ritchie of Kerens.

On the First Team, second seeded Cayuga placed four players; third seeded Kerens four players; fourth seeded Martins Mill four players, and Cross Roads one player. Neches placed two players on the 1-A list.

On the Second Team, Cayuga had two players; Kerens had one; Martins Mill placed three; and Cross Roads had six. Neches placed two on the list.

For Honorable Mention, Cayuga and Kerens each listed two players.

Indians edged 11-10 by Bowie

in deciding game of 2A Area

The Frankston Indians saw their chances to advance in the Class 2A playoffs fade away in the bottom of the seventh inning as the James Bowie (Simms) Pirates scored an 11-10 victory in the deciding Game 3 of the Area playoff series Friday night, May 13, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The Tribe had a 10-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh but consecutive singles and some key walks produced the necessary four scores which gave Bowie the win.

Bowie’s Game 3 win followed a 6-5 win by the Pirates in Game 2 which spoiled the Indians’ hopes of a two-game sweep of the series after they defeated the Pirates 11-1 in Game 1 on Thursday. 

The Indians had achieved a first seed spot in the playoffs when they won a playoff with Cayuga and Kerens needed after the three teams tied for first place in District 20-2A.

Then on Saturday, May 7, they defeated Big Sandy 13-1 to take the Bi-District championship series two games to one.

Friday night’s deciding game saw Bowie take an early lead 5-3 in the third inning. They padded that lead with two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings and the Indians scored another to trail 7-4.

The Tribe had a five-run comeback in the top of the sixth to go ahead of the Pirates 9-7 and they made it 10-7 in the top of the seventh after Bowie failed to score in their half of the sixth.

However, the Pirates came back with timely singles and walks to secure their one-run victory and advance in the 2A playoffs.

The Indians had eight hits to seven for the Pirates and Indians Austin Carr and Matt Metzig had a double each. Robert Walker, Walker London, Conlan Lemay, Clayton Merritt, Christian Hernandez and Tripp Hallmark each had singles.

Walker McCann started on the mound for the Indians going 2⅓ innings. He allowed only one hit and four earned runs while walking seven. He had one strikeout. Hernandez came in for 3⅔ innings allowing four hits, two earned runs and no walks. He also had a strikeout. Walker pitched a third of an inning, allowing two hits, three earned runs and three walks. He had one strikeout.

Bowie used four pitchers who allowed eight hits, eight earned runs, and 11 walks. They all had seven strikeouts.

The Indians ended their season with a 21-12 overall record.

BOWIE EDGES INDIANS 6-5 IN GAME 2 OF AREA SERIES

The Frankston Indians loaded the bases twice in the bottom of the seventh but were able to get only two runs and were edged by Bowie (Simms) 6-5 in Game 2 of the best of three Class 2A Area Playoff series Friday, May 13 at Gilmer, according to information made available by Frankston scorers.

The Indians’ loss knotted the series at 1-1 and set up a deciding Game 3 to come up shortly after Game 2.

Indians fans had visions of a walkoff win by their Tribe as they trailed by only one and had the bases loaded with two out in that decisive bottom of the seventh. However, a pop out to shortstop ended their hopes and stranded runners who could have either tied or won it for the Indians.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 after an inning, but in the third Bowie scored a run to go ahead 2-1. Things looked better for the Indians when they scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 3-2.

Inning 5 put the Pirates on top to stay with three runs and make it Bowie 5, Indians 3, after two Tribe errors put two men on base, followed by a three-run home run by the Pirates. The Indians were held scoreless in their half of the fifth and sixth and the Pirates added another run in top of the seventh to lead 6-3.

Things looked promising for the Indians in the bottom of the seventh as Robert Walker singled, followed by a single by Walker London putting London on first and Caleb Ramsey, running for Walker, on second. When Matt Metzig walked, the bases were loaded with no outs.

The next Tribe batter hit a fly out to center, and Ramsey scored on the play, narrowing the Pirates lead to 6-4 with one out. With runners on first and second, another fly out to left field made it two outs. Walker McCann was up to bat next and he stretched the count to 3 and 2 before getting a base-on-balls to load the bases again for the Tribe.

Tripp Hallmark out-waited the Bowie pitcher and earned another walk, scoring London to narrow the Bowie lead further to 6-5. However, with two away, the pop out ended Tribe hopes of a two-game sweep in the series.

Hitting for the Indians were Walker with 2 of 2 and London with 2 of 4 and two RBIs. Austin Carr and Metzig got two singles.

London went the distance on the mound for the Indians, allowing six hits including a home run, two earned runs and a base-on-balls. He had six strikeouts.

Bowie’s two pitchers gave up six hits, three earned runs and six walks. They only carded one strikeout.

Indians win Game 1 of Area

series by 11-1 against Bowie

The Bi-District Champion Frankston Indians scored nine runs in the first three innings to spark an 11-1 win in Game 1 over the James Bowie Pirates (Simms) in a Class 2A Area playoff series at Gilmer Thursday, May 12, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The Indians and the Pirates will play their second game of the best of three series at 5 p.m. Friday, May 13, followed shortly afterward with a third game, if needed.

The Indians showed early signs of what would be a 11-run, 10 hit performance when Walker London slammed a home run with two out to score Austin Carr who had opened the first inning with a walk.

When Bowie went three up and three down, it was 2-0 Indians at the end of the first.

The Indians were to continue their scoring in the top of the second as Clayton Merritt walked. A pop out followed but Tripp Hallmark reached first on an error and Merritt, who had stolen second, advanced to third. Then Carr doubled to center field scoring Merritt, and Hallmark went to third. Ryan Harper came up next and singled to score Hallmark. Carr advanced to third.

Robert Walker then hit a two-run double, scoring Carr and Harper to increase the Indians lead to 6-0 going into the bottom of the second.

Despite a walk and a single, a ground out and a fly out was followed by a strikeout by Tribe pitcher Matt Metzig to end the second inning for the Pirates.

In the top of the third, the Indians were to score three more runs. The first score came after Merritt was hit by a pitch and later advanced to second and third on wild pitches. Walker McCann followed with a single to score Merritt. Then when Carr came up to bat again, he singled to right field and advanced to second and McCann went to third on an error. With two out Robert Walker doubled again to score both McCann and Carr. The Indians led 9-0 as the Pirates came up to bat in the bottom of the third.

Bowie scored their only run when their first batter walked and ended up on third after a couple of outs. They scored when a two-out single sent the runner home. The inning closed with the Tribe still ahead 9-1.

The Indians were to score a run in the fourth and one in the fifth to secure their 11-1 victory in five innings, thanks to the 10-run rule.

London’s home run, two doubles by Walker and one each by Conlan Lemay and Carr gave the Indians their extra base hits. Carr went 3 of 3 at the plate and Walker was 2 of 3. London’s homer  made him 1 of 2 but with two RBIs and Walker was credited with four RBIs. Harper, Metzig,  and McCann each had key singles.

Metzig was on the mound for the Indians for 3⅔ innings, allowing two hits and walking five. He had three strikeouts. Christian Hernandez came in to relieve Metzig and allowed only one hit. He struck out three in 1⅓ innings.

Indians win Bi-District Championship!

Indians to advance to 2A Area

The Frankston Indians, after a 4-2 win in Game 2 of their Bi-District playoff series with Big Sandy, defeated the Wildcats 13-1 Saturday afternoon, May 7 to take the first round of the Class 2A playoffs in the third and deciding game of the series, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The two wins Saturday came after a 14-8 loss to Big Sandy on Friday, May 6 which challenged the Indians to win both their games Saturday to advance in the playoffs.

In a morning game Saturday, the Indians took advantage of a costly Big Sandy error in the top of the sixth inning to score two runs and go on to the 4-2 win in Game 2 of the Class 2A Bi-District series at Grand Saline, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

Walker London, who came in for two innings in Game 2 to preserve the win for senior hurler Clayton Merritt, continued to excel on the mound in Game 3 as he held the Wildcats to only one earned run on one hit and had five strikeouts. He had allowed two hits but no runs in the save in Game 2.

Meanwhile, Indian batters appeared to have saved up their energy for the third game as they pounded the Wildcats with 10 hits, 12 RBIs and 12 earned runs. Big Sandy’s four pitchers could only strike out one batter during the game.

The Tribe hitters punctuated their performance with a double, a triple and a home run as well as seven singles.

Frankston started out in the first inning with three runs, added four in each of the next two and capped their scoring with two in the bottom of the fourth, all this while allowing the Wildcats only one score in the second.

Ryan Harper’s home run in the bottom of the third enhanced his 2 of 3 performance at the plate and gave him two RBIs. Robert Walker’s double and Conlan Lemay’s triple sparked the four-run second inning. Lemay was 3 of 4  with three RBIs. Walker’s double yielded three RBIs. Matt Metzig was 2 of 3 and got two RBIs. The 11 Tribe walks put runners on base to swell the scoring chances.

Pitcher London helped his own cause, going 2 of 2 at the plate and was credited with an RBI.

INDIANS WIN GAME 2  OVER BIG SANDY 4-2

The Indians took advantage of Big Sandy’s only error to score two runs and break a 2-2 tie in Game 2 of the Bi-District series and go on to win 4-2.

The two teams were tied at 2-2 going into the top of the sixth. The Indians put Walker London on base with a double followed by a single by Matt Metzig. On the next play, London scored on an error by the Wildcats. On the same error, Metzig rounded third and came home with the second Tribe score to give Frankston a 4-2 lead. They would hold that lead, thanks to a key double play with one out in their half of the sixth. Then the Tribe held Big Sandy in the bottom of the seventh with a fly out, a pop out and a ground out to squelch a two-single effort by the Wildcats.

Besides London’s double and one by Ryan Harper, the Indians got a single from Robert Walker and three singles from Metzig, including the one in the sixth inning.

Clayton Merritt pitched for five innings before London relieved for two. Merritt allowed six hits, but only two runs, walked one and had seven strikeouts.

Big sixth inning negates Tribe

lead to give Big Sandy win 14-8

The Frankston Indians saw an 8-5 lead evaporate in the top of the sixth as Big Sandy scored eight runs to go ahead 13-8 and then score again in the seventh for a 14-8 win in Game 1 of the Class 2A Bi-District series Friday, May 6, according to information from the Frankston scorer.

The Tribe loss makes Saturday morning’s second game of the best of three series crucial if the Indians are to have a chance to capture the first round in the playoffs. The game will be at 11 a.m. at Grand Saline. A third game, if needed, will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.

In the Friday night game, Big Sandy went out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then scored three more runs in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Indians bounced back in their half of the third with four runs to tie things at 4-4. Both teams scored a run in the fourth for a 5-5 tie but the Indians scored three in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead.

The Wildcats were not deterred as they scored eight runs in the top of the sixth and one more in their half of the seventh while Big Sandy pitching held the Tribe scoreless.

Big Sandy had 13 hits and the Indians had 7 in the contest. Both teams had nine bases on balls but the Wildcats pitchers struck out 10 Tribe batters while being victims of only four strikeouts by Indians pitching.

Indians Austin Carr and Robert Walker each had doubles for their only hits. Ryan Harper, Walker London, Matt Metzig, Conlan Lemay and Walker McCann each had singles for the Indians. Carr led in RBIs with three. Walker had two for a team total of seven.

The Indians used four pitchers. McCann started, pitching 2⅔ innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs while walking four. He had one strikeout. Metzig relieved and went 2⅓ innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while walking one. He had three strikeouts. London pitched an inning with two hits, two walks and two earned runs. Walker was on the mound for one inning allowing two hits and two walks and one earned run.

Frankston athletes compete well

but do not advance at Regionals

Ten Frankston athletes who qualified for Regionals reached the finals but did not advance to the State Meet in their events at the Region III, Class 2A Track and Field Meet Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30 at Palestine, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

Only the first two athletes who placed in each event qualified for state competition.

Schools which had athletes to qualify for State in the events in which Frankston athletes reached the finals were Big Sandy, Dawson, Cayuga, Beckville,  Chilton, Hawkins, Kerens, Timpson, Joaquin, San Augustine, Union Grove, Rosebud-Lott, Marlin, Lovelady, Mount Enterprise and Centerville.

Frankston Coaches Lisa Hokit for the girls and Alec Wofford for the boys, praised the Frankston Regional qualifiers for their effort in advancing to the regional meet and competing well among the array of talented athletes.

Kerens win over Indians 8-3

forces playoffs for 2A seeds

The Frankston Indians baseball team fell to the Kerens Bobcats 8-3 Friday, April 29 at Kerens and now is in a three-way tie with Cayuga and Kerens for first place in District 20-2A, forcing a three-team playoff event to settle 2A playoff seeding, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The three teams each have records of 9-3 in district competition after the game Friday night.

UPDATE: According to latest reports, a three-team tournament will be played on Monday, May 2, at Cumberland Academy in Tyler, weather permitting, with the first game starting at noon.

In preparation for the tournament, Cayuga won a coin toss among the three teams giving them a bye in the first round of the event. The tournament plan schedules Game 1 between Kerens and Frankston to be held at noon, with the loser in that game to become third seed from District 20-2A. The winner will then play Cayuga in Game 2 approximately 30 minutes after conclusion of Game 1 to determine the top two seeds.

The game at Kerens Friday night was tight for five innings. Both the Indians and the Bobcats scored a run in the first inning and it was 1-1 until the bottom of the fourth when Kerens scored a run to go ahead 2-1. The Indians answered in the top of the fifth with two runs to take the lead 3-2. However in the bottom of the sixth inning, Kerens came back with six runs to take their 8-3 win when the Indians failed to score in the top of the seventh.

In that decisive sixth inning, Kerens started out with a single, and a bunt sent a runner to second. A walk put runners on first and second. Then a home run by Kerens put the Bobcats ahead 5-3 with two outs. A walk followed by a single scored another run for Kerens. Then another walk and a single scored two more Bobcat runs to make it 8-3 before the frame ended.

In the top of the seventh, all the Indians could get was a single along with two strikeouts and a fly out to end the game.

The Indians were held to five hits while Kerens was getting eight. Ryan Harper, Robert Walker, Walker London, Matt Metzig and Conlan Lemay each singled for the Tribe. Walker and Clayton Merritt were awarded a RBI each.

Besides the home run, Kerens batters had seven timely singles.

Three pitchers were on the mound for the Indians. Metzig went three innings, allowing two hits, walking two and with two strikeouts. London pitched 2⅔ innings, allowing four hits, striking out one and walking three. Walker came in for a third of an inning, allowing two hits and walking one.

Kerens used two pitchers who combined to allow the five hits, four walks and 12 strikeouts.

Early Hawkins scoring secures win

over Maidens in 2A Bi-District play

The Frankston Maidens ended their promising season Thursday, April 28 as the 19-2A champion Hawkins Lady Hawks  connected for 19 runs, 17 in the first three innings, for a 19-1 victory in a Bi-district game at Grand Saline, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

The Maidens could get only two hits off of Hawkins pitching. Senior Kaitlyn Matthews played her last softball game as a Maiden but turned a double to open the third inning into a score when Kaysiah Burnett reached first on a dropped third strike. On the play, Matthews scored for what would be the only Maiden score of the night. Jaycie Dillard had the other hit for the Frankston team.

Otherwise it would be all Hawkins in every inning. Hawkins was getting 14 hits and scoring earned and unearned runs. 

The Hawkins pitcher, Trinity Hawkins(1), not only had 10 strikeouts in the five innings, she also went 4 of 5 at the plate to lead Lady Hawks batters. Of those four hits, one was a home run and the other a triple and she led with four RBIs. Shortstop Lynli Dacus (11) was 3 of 4, all singles, with two RBIs. The other Lady Hawk hitters were credited with the other six of the team’s 12 RBIs.

Jaycie Dillard started in the pitching circle for the Maidens and allowed six hits. Coming in for the remainder of the game was Julianne Gould, who allowed eight hits and walked two.

The Maidens finished the season as Bi-District Finalist after a fourth place finish in District 20-2A. Their overall record was 10-13, putting together a winning margin going into the playoffs. 

Seniors playing their last softball game for the Maidens were Matthews, Kelsey Sexton and Brianna (Bri) Looney.

Indians eye 2A first seeding

in playoffs, down Kerens 6-4

The Frankston Indians baseball team eyed a possible first seed in the Class 2A playoffs after defeating Kerens 6-4 at Bullard Brook Hill Tuesday, April 26, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The Indians’ victory increased their District 20-2A record to 9-2 and their season record to 16-8. Kerens drops to 8-3 in district and 16-5 for the season.

If the Indians can defeat Kerens on the road on Friday, April 29, they would be 10-2 and take over first place from Cayuga which finished at 9-3. Kerens would drop to 8-4.

If Kerens was to win, the Indians would drop to 9-3 and be tied with Cayuga and Kerens for first place, setting up a three-team playoff to settle 2A playoff seeding, according to latest information. The potential schedule for such a playoff would not be decided  definitely until after the Indians’ game with Kerens on Friday, 

In the Kerens game on April 26, the Indians took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added another run in the bottom of the second to take a 6-2 lead over the Bobcats. They held that lead until the top of the sixth when Kerens scored two more runs, not enough to to keep the Tribe from taking the 6-4 win.

Both teams got only four hits but the Indians took the edge with fewer players left on base. Both teams had two RBIs and each team allowed three earned runs.

Matt Metzig led Indians hitters with 2 of 3, both singles. Ryan Harper and Conlan Lemay each had singles.

The big inning for the Tribe was the bottom of the first when they scored five runs. The inning started with an Austin Carr walk. After Carr stole second, Harper singled to advance Carr to third. Robert Walker then walked after Harper stole second. Walker’s base-on-balls loaded the bases. On a fly out, Carr scored the first run from third and Harper made it to third. Harper scored on a passed ball. Then Metzig singled to advance Walker to third. The bases were full again when Merritt was awarded first when hit by a pitch. Walker scored on a passed ball. Metzig went to third and Caleb Ramsey, running for pitcher Merritt, went to second. It was 3-1 Frankston when Walker McCann reach first on a dropped third strike and Metzig scored to give the Indians a 4-1 lead. The Indians had their 5-1 lead when Caleb Ramsey scored from third when the ball was in play before the inning ended.

Kerens scored another run in the top of the second to make it 5-2 and the Indians answered in their half of the frame with a run when Walker got a walk and Walker London reached first on an error. That was when Metzig got the second of his two singles. The bases were full with two out when Merritt walked, scoring Walker from third to make it 6-2 at the final out.

Kerens was to score two more runs in the sixth, but not enough to overcome the early Tribe lead. The only extra base hit came in the first when Kerens posted a triple.

Merritt pitched five innings for Frankston, allowing three runs on three hits, walking six and getting five strikeouts. London relieved for two innings allowing one run on a hit, walking two and getting a couple of strikeouts.

The Indians will be at Kerens on Friday, April 29 for the final regular season and district game at 7 p.m.

Valley Mills 12-run seventh inning

seals victory over Indians by 20-9 

The Frankston Indians saw an 8-3 lead going into the fifth inning begin to slip away as Valley Mills scored 17 runs in the final three innings to only one for the Tribe to run away with a 20-9 non-district victory Saturday, April 23 at the FHS field, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The loss for the Indians gave them a 15-8 overall record. They remain in second place at 8-2 in district play with two key league games against third place Kerens destined to determine final seeding for the 2A playoffs.

Valley Mills opened the game with three runs in the first two innings, but Frankston came back to tie the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the second.

The Valley Mills bats were silenced in the third and fourth innings while the Indians were scoring five runs to take what appeared to be a comfortable lead at 8-3. Unfortunately for the Indians, that was all the scoring they would get for the next two innings at bat. Valley Mills began working their way back, first with a run in the fifth and then four runs in the sixth to tie things at 8-8.

The top of the seventh proved fatal to the Indians chances for a win as Valley Mills amassed 12 runs to go ahead 20-8. With a 12-run deficit to overcome, the Indians could score only one run in their half of the seventh.

The Indians used six pitchers in the contest and Valley Mills used four. The combination of Tribe pitching gave up 16 hits, 14 earned runs, walked seven and had five strikeouts. Valley Mills pitchers allowed six hits, seven earned runs, walked seven and had 10 strikeouts.

The Indians had four errors to only one for Valley Mills.

The Indians had their best inning in the fourth when they scored the four runs which put them on top 8-3. With one out, Conlan Lemay and Jared Cook walked and then Walker McCann doubled to score Lemay and Cook. Then Ryan Harper singled to score Caleb Ramsey, running for McCann. The Indians took what appeared a comfortable lead when Robert Walker doubled, scoring Harper.

Valley Mills put together eight hits, including a double, and took advantage of free trips to first and a fielding error in that fateful 12-run seventh inning.

Austin Carr, Harper, Walker, Merritt, Walker London and McCann each had hits, including the doubles by McCann and Walker in that fruitful Tribe fourth inning.

On the mound for the Indians in the contest were the six pitchers. Merritt pitched an inning, allowed one hit, one run, a walk and had two strikeouts. London went two innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walked two and two strikeouts. McCann pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits and walked two. Metzig went one inning, allowed two hits, and five runs, two earned. He walked two and had one strikeout. In part of an inning, Walker allowed five hits and seven runs, six earned. Lemay pitched one inning, allowed three hits and four runs, three earned.

The Indians have two more regular season games, both district contests, with Kerens. On Tuesday, April 26 the Tribe will host Kerens at the FHS field, and then on Friday, April 29th, they go to Kerens. Final seeding in the playoffs will be determined after that.

FHS golfer Bandy Bizzell qualifies

for trip to 2A State Golf Tourney

Bandy Bizzell of Frankston, who advanced from District 19-2A Golf Tournament, finished fourth overall at the 2A Girls Region III Golf Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday, April 20-21 and qualified for the 2A Girls State Golf Tournament in Austin on May 16-17 as the second medalist, according to a report by Coach Scotty Albritton.

This will be the second straight year that Bizzell has been a regional qualifier and qualified for state competition as a medalist.

Coach Albritton said Mia Nixon of Martins Mill, who had qualified for regional at the district tournament, was the overall regional champion and also advanced.

The 2A Girls State Tournament is scheduled to be played at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

Maidens get another win 12-8

The Frankston Maidens continued their winning streak Tuesday, April 19 with a 12-8 non-district win over Brook Hill, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

The Maidens are now 10-12 for the season and remain at 5-7 in district play.

The Maidens were knotted with Brook Hill in the first quarter 2-2 and went ahead 3-2 in the top of the second. However, Brook Hill scored three runs in their half of the frame to take the lead 5-3. The Maidens came back with two runs in the top of the third to tie things again at 5-5, but in the bottom of the fourth Brook Hill scored three more runs to again lead 8-5.

As it turned out, that was all the runs that Brook Hill would get in the game. The Maidens came back in the top of the sixth with five runs to go ahead 10-8 and then secured their win with a two-run seventh inning.

Both teams had 10 hits in the contest but the Maidens’ hits came when they needed them and they benefitted from four Brook Hill errors.

Extra base hits played a role in the Maidens win. Lynsie Bizzell got a home run. Coralyn Happel had two triples and Jaycie Dillard hit a two-bagger. Their efforts drove in a total of eight runs. Bizzell, Happel, Dillard and Kelsey Sexton each got two hits. Sexton and Addi Loebig each drove in a run and got singles. Zoey Walker was credited with another RBI.

Bizzell’s inside-the-park home run gave the Maidens their first lead in the top of the second. In the third, a single by Kaysiah Burnett and an error scored Burnett and a triple put Happel on third. Happel scored when sent home after a series of walks.

In the big sixth inning, Happel tripled again scoring Julianna Gould and Burnett who had walked. Happel scored on a ground out. Sexton and Loebig, who got on base on a walk and an error, scored on a Bizzell single.

In the top of the seventh, Happel got on base on an error and Dillard singled. Then Sexton singled to score Happel and Sexton scored on a Loebig single.

Dillard went for all seven innings in  the pitching circle, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs. She had 11 strikeouts and walked only four.

Frankston entries second, third

at 2A Area track meet April 18

The Frankston Maidens track and field team finished in second place and the Indians team finished third in the District 19 and 20-2A  Area Meet Monday, April 18 at Madisonville High School, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

The top four individuals among the Maidens and Indians will be advancing to the Region III meet at Palestine on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30.

Both teams earned 81 points in the meet, the Maidens second only to Lovelady’s 156 points and the Indians behind first place Centerville with 188 and second place Lovelady’s 130.5.

The LaPoynor boys entries did not score any points but the LaPoynor girls had eight points in the meet.

Other teams and individuals participating were from Cross Roads, Leon, Groveton, Cayuga, Kerens, Latexo, Martins Mill, Slocum and Grapeland.

Advancing for the Maidens will be Tia Billingsly, Kaylee Davis, Kaysie Nabors, JerMya Mitchell and Nyla Muhammad. For the Indians, those advancing will be Kaymon Davis, Ryan Harper, Reese Hicks, Tyler Rogers, Isaiah Allen, Caleb Ramsey, Jeremiah Mitchell, Ethan Ogg, Sir Isaac Foster, Cael Bruno and Benton Allen.

Maidens’ fifth, sixth surge wins

over Cayuga 10-2 on April 15

The Frankston Maidens improved their District 20-2A record Friday, April 15 with a 10-run performance in the fifth and sixth innings for a 10-2 victory over the Cayuga Lady Wildcats at the FHS softball field, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

The Maidens are now 9-12 overall and 5-7 in district play.

The Lady Wildcats took an early lead over the Maidens scoring a run in each of the second and third innings, but Frankston came back in the fifth to score four runs and go ahead 4-2. They put together a six-run sixth inning to secure their win.

The Maidens ended up with 12 hits for the night, mostly singles, but Kaysiah Burnett contributed a key double to the cause.

The four-run bottom of the fifth started off with a single by Brianna Looney followed by Burnett being awarded first base after being hit by a pitch. Then Coralyn Happel singled to load the bases. A Jaycie Dillard single scored Looney.

Then a Kelsey Sexton single scored Burnett but kept the bases loaded. Happel scored when Addi Loebig walked. Jaycie Dillard scored on a fielders choice grounder. That gave the Maidens a 4-2 lead going into the sixth.

Cayuga went three-up and three-down in the top of the sixth.

Then the Maidens mounted their six-run surge in the bottom of the sixth. Again Looney started things off with a single. Then Julianne Gould grounded into a fielder’s choice to reach first safely. Burnett’s double sent Gould to third and then Happel singled to score Gould. On a ground out, Burnett scored and Happel went to third. A single by Sexton scored Happel. Loebig reached first on an error and Sexton scored. Loebig went to third on a pitching error and Lynsie Bizzell walked.

On the final play of the inning, Kaitlyn Matthews singled, scoring Loebig and Bizzell. It was 10-2 after the final out.

Burnett was the leading hitter going 2 of 3 at the plate, including a key double. Looney, Happel, Dillard and Sexton were 2 of 4. Loebig and Matthews each had singles. Dillard, Sexton and Matthews were credited with two RBIs each.

Gould went all seven innings in the pitching circle for Frankston allowing two runs on five hits. She had six strikeouts, walked three and allowed only one earned run.

Cayuga scores nine runs early

to spark 14-8 win over Tribe

The Cayuga Wildcats scored nine runs in the first three innings Friday, April 15 to take a commanding lead and come away with a 14-8 victory over the Frankston Indians in a District 20-2A baseball game at the FHS field, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The Indians could get only one run in the second inning. They did come back in the sixth and seventh innings with seven runs, but Cayuga added five more runs in those two frames to secure their win.

The Tribe got 12 scattered hits, but could not always turn their hits into RBIs, particularly in the early innings. 

The Indians’ 12 hits included doubles by Austin Carr, Trip Hallmark, Clayton Merritt and Ryan Harper.

Carr led Indians hitters with three hits in five trips to the plate but none, including a double, drove in a run. Hallmark was 2 of 3, including a double, with one RBI. Walker had two hits in five at-bats, batting in two runs. Harper got only one hit, but that was a double, driving in three runs. Conlan Lemay had one hit which accounted for a RBI. Merritt, London and Metzig each had hits, including a double by Merritt.

Cayuga pitching yielded nine strikeouts and only two walks.

The Indians used three pitchers during the night. Walker London started for Frankston and pitched 1⅔ innings, allowing only three hits but Cayuga scored seven runs. None of the runs were scored as earned runs. He walked three and had no strikeouts. Matt Metzig came in to pitch four innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He had three strikeouts and walked two. He gave up only one earned run. Robert Walker pitched the final 1⅓ innings allowing two hits and three runs with two earned. He struck out two and walked two.

The loss made the Tribe 1-1 against Cayuga. They had defeated the Wildcats on April 11 by 15-5 at Cayuga.

The Indians are now 15-7 overall and 8-2 in district competition.

Indians’ fourth, fifth innings

clinch win over Cayuga 15-5

The Frankston Indians battled the Cayuga Wildcats close in the early innings but came through with eight big runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure a 15-5 victory in a District 22-2A game at Cayuga Monday, April 11, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

It was close in the first three innings even though the Indians had a 4-2 lead at the end of the first. Cayuga came back with two runs in the bottom of the second after a one-run Indians half of the frame. The score was then 5-4.

The persistent Wildcats kept it close in the third, matching single runs with the Tribe to make it 6-5.

Things opened up for the Indians in the fourth as they scored five key runs to take a 11-5 lead. As it turned out Cayuga would not get another run for the remainder of the game while the Indians scored four, three in the fifth and one in the top of the seventh.

That big fourth inning and its five runs broke the ice for the Indians. It all started when Austin Carr walked and made it to second on a wild pitch. The Indians were to score when Carr went home on an error which allowed Ryan Harper to reach first safely. Harper reached second on the same error. On a ground out, Harper went to third and then Walker London singled to score Harper. A passed ball allowed Harper to go to second. Then Matt Metzig reached first on another error. London scored on a single by Merritt. Then Metzig scored from third to make the score 10-5 going into the bottom of the fourth.

Cayuga went three-up and three-down in their half of the fourth, setting the stage for another big inning for the Indians in the fifth.

Another Cayuga error allowed Carr to reach first and stretch his run to second. After a strikeout, Robert Walker saw a pitch he liked and slammed the ball for a home run, scoring himself and driving in Carr. London came up next and singled and later went to second on a wild pitch. Metzig was up next and his grounder allowed him to reach first on an error and London to score. When the Indians’ time at bat ended, they had a 14-5 lead.

The Indians iced the win with a run by Caleb Ramsey, running for Walker, who had reached first on a error earlier and Ramsey had advanced to third, scoring on another Cayuga error.

London led hitters, going 3 of 3 at the plate and a RBI. Carr was 2 of 3 and Walker McCann was 2 of 4 with two RBIs, but the big hit was Robert Walker’s home run, his only hit in five times at bat, and giving him two RBIs. Also getting two RBIs was Conlan Lemay with a single. Merritt also singled and had a RBI and Harper was credited with a RBI.

Merritt pitched four innings allowing five runs on five hits. He had nine strikeouts. London relieved for three innings, and allowed only one hit while getting three strikeouts.

Big early Maidens lead assures

13-4 win over Cayuga April 11 

The Frankston Maidens jumped out to an early 10-0 lead before Cayuga got on the scoreboard Monday, April 11 in a convincing 13-4 District 20-2A win at Cayuga, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

The Maidens went on to score three more runs late while holding the Lady Wildcats to only four runs.

Maidens’ bats were active during the evening, led by extra base hits by Brianna Looney,  Addi Loebig and Kelsey Sexton.

Meanwhile, Maidens pitcher Jaycie Dillard was allowing eight hits and posting eight strikeouts while allowing just two bases-on-balls.

Neither team scored in the first inning, but the Maidens scored three runs in each of the next two innings and four in the fourth.

In the second inning, two Frankston batters, Coralyn Happel and Dillard reached first on errors, setting up a double by Sexton which scored Happel and put Dillard on third. A sacrifice fly scored Dillard and put Sexton in scoring position. Looney got on base on a fielder’s choice play and Julianne Gould and Kaysiah Burnett walked. Sexton scored leaving runners on second and third. It was 3-0 going into the bottom of the second.

Cayuga was scoreless in the second, but the Maidens padded their lead in the top of the third. Happel started the third with a single and then Sexton walked. A double by Loebig scored Happel and Sexton. Then Looney tripled, scoring Loebig. It was 6-0 at the bottom of the third.

Again Cayuga was held scoreless going into the top of the fourth.

In the Maidens half of that frame, Burnett reached first on an error and Kaylee Davis was safe at first on a fielder’s choice. Another error allowed Happel to reach first safely. When Dillard walked, the bases were loaded. On a triple steal, Davis scored. Loebig walked, loading the bases again. Happel scored on an error and Lynsie Bizzell singled to score Dillard. Then, when Looney singled, Loebig scored. The Maidens had their 10-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.

Cayuga managed to get their first scores in their side of the frame to make it 10-2. Both teams were scoreless in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Loebig singled and advanced to third on a Looney double.  Gould followed with a single which scored Loebig to make it 11-2.

Again Cayuga scored two in their half of the inning to make it 11-4, Frankston.

However, the Maidens scored two more in the top of the seventh to give them a 13-4 winning margin. Things started when Davis was safe at first on a fielder’s choice. After a Happel single and Dillard reached first on a walk,  Davis scored on a wild pitch and Loebig singled to score Happel.

Overall the Maidens had 11 hits and 10 RBIs along with eight walks.

Loebig led hitters going 3 of 3 at the plate, including a double. Looney was 3 of 5 with a double and a triple. Sexton’s one hit was a key double. Happel was 2 of 5, both singles. Also getting  singles were  Gould and Bizzell.

The Maidens are now 8-12 overall and 4-7 in district play. They host Cayuga on Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. when it will be Senior Night at the FHS softball field.

LaPoynor scores early to defeat

Indians 10-4 in April 8 contest

The LaPoynor Flyers scored nine runs in the first three innings to take a 9-1 lead and went on to score another run in the top of the seventh to take a 10-4 win over the Frankston Indians in a District 20-2A baseball game at the FHS field, according to a report made available by the Frankston scorer.

The Indians scored one run in the first, one in the fifth and two in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t make up for the big early Flyers lead.

The big first inning for LaPoynor started when Austin Majors slammed a double which was to ultimately put him on third when Karson Rhoades singled him home. A triple by Kase Johnston scored Case Partridge, running for pitcher Rhoades. Then Jayden Manken singled to score Johnston to give the Flyers a 4-0 lead.

Frankston’s Austin Carr, who earlier had hit a double, scored a single run in the bottom of the first to make it 4-1, LaPoynor.

In the top of the second, Kasen Reynolds singled for the Flyers and later Reynolds scored from third on a fly out to right field. Johnston singled to score Blaine Musselman, who got on base by an error. A passed ball allowed Majors, who had walked, to score from third, making the score 7-1, LaPoynor. Johnston scored from second on a double by Rustin Pittman and it was 8-1, Flyers, going into the third.

In the third, Matt Driskell scored on a single from Musselman to increase the LaPoynor lead to 9-1.

Frankston was to get a second run in the bottom of the fifth, when a Robert Walker single scored Jared Cook, who was on base by an error. It was 9-2 until the seventh inning when Reynolds scored from third on a fly out.

The Indians came back in the bottom of the seventh with two runs after doubles by Carr and Harper, the latter scoring Carr. Another double, this one by Matt Metzig, allowed Harper to score. 

For Frankston, Carr and Walker were 2 of 4. Harper, London, Metzig and Clayton Merritt, each had hits. Carr, Harper and Metzig each had a double.

For LaPoynor, Johnston had three hits, including a triple and a double. Rhoades and Manken had two singles each. Majors and Pittman each had doubles. Reynolds and Musselman each had a single. The team had nine RBIs.

Pitching for Frankston were Metzig, who allowed seven hits and had one strikeout in two innings, and London, who allowed four hits and had three strikeouts in five innings.

Rhoades went seven innings for LaPoynor, allowing eight hits. He had four strikeouts.

It was the second meeting of the week for the two teams. The Indians had won 6-4 at LaPoynor on Tuesday, April 5.

The Indians are now 14-6 overall and 7-1 in district competition,

The Tribe will travel to Cayuga on Monday, April 11 for a 6 p.m. game. The game was moved from April 12 due to a weather forecast of rain and thunderstorms, it was reported.

Maidens outscore LaPoynor 15-11

in District 20-2A matchup April 8

The Frankston Maidens won a high-scoring District 20-2A softball game with the LaPoynor Lady Flyers 15-11 on Friday, April 8 at the FHS softball field, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

The Maidens turned a first-inning 3-0 lead into runs in all but one of the remaining frames. The biggest scoring inning for both teams was the fifth when LaPoynor had five runs and the Maidens six. After that, the Frankston girls still had a lead of 11-9. The Lady Flyers were able to score two more runs in the top of the sixth but the Maidens answered with four to secure the win. 

The Maidens had 17 hits in 34 times at bat and were credited with 15 RBIs. Leading hitters for the Frankston girls were Julianna Gould with 4 of 5 with two RBIs. Kaysiah Burnett and Kaylee Davis were 3 of 4 at the plate with four and five RBIs respectively. They each had a double. Brianna Looney was 3 of 3 at the plate, all singles. Coralyn Happel had two hits, including a double. Lynsie Bizzell’s sole hit was a double. Jaycie Dillard added a single.

Scoring were Looney, Gould and Burnett with three each and Addi Loebig and Bizzell with two each. Davis and Dillard each had a run.

The Lady Flyers had seven hits and took advantage of eight Maidens errors. They had seven RBIs. Leading hitters for LaPoynor were Abby Williams who went 2 of 4, including a triple,  and Emily Klutts, with two singles and two RBIs. Bre Howard has two hits and Luna Hernandez one.

Scoring for the Lady Flyers were Howard with four and Hernandez with three. Williams had two runs and Klutts added two others.

Gould pitched five innings for the Maidens, allowed six hits and had one strikeout. Dillard pitched for two innings, allowing a hit. She had one strikeout.

For LaPoynor, Adrianna Estrada pitched for six innings, allowing 17 hits and seven walks.

The Maidens are now 7-12 overall and 3-7 in district play.

Next up for the Maidens is a district game at Cayuga on Monday, April 11, according to the coaches. The Friday, April 15 home game with Cayuga will be Senior Night, set for 6 p.m.

Maidens break tie in fifth

to defeat LaPoynor by 7-3

The LaPoynor Lady Flyers and the Frankston Maidens were knotted at 2-2 for four innings on Thursday, April 7 but the Maidens went ahead to stay in the fifth inning for a 7-3 District 20-2A victory at LaPoynor, according to a report made available by Frankston coaches.

The Maidens scored first when Jaycie Dillard singled and Kaysiah Burnett scored with two outs. LaPoynor came back in the bottom of the first, when Mary Ficco and Abby Williams scored from a single by Bre Howard, putting the Lady Flyers ahead 2-1. Frankston was to tie things up at 2-2 in the top of the second following a couple of doubles, one by Zoey Walker and a second by Lynsie Bizzell which scored Walker.

For two and a half innings, neither team could score, but in the top of the fifth, the Maidens came up with four runs, as Dillard singled and Kelsey Sexton followed with a double. Then Addi Loebig singled to score Dillard. Sexton scored on a ground out play. Then Bizzell tripled to score Loebig and Julianne Gould singled in Bizzell from third. The Maidens were ahead 6-2.

Frankston was to score once more in the top of sixth as Kaylee Davis, who had doubled earlier, went home from third on a ground out play. LaPoynor’s final score came when Luna Hernandez came home on an error.

The Maidens carded 13 hits including a triple by Bizzell and doubles by Walker Davis, Bizzell and Sexton. Davis and Sexton were 3 of 4 and Bizzell 2 of 3, both for extra bases. Dillard was 2 of 4 and Gould, Loebig and Walker each had one hit, Walker’s a two-bagger. Dillard and Bizzell each had two RBIs.

LaPoynor had seven hits, three by Ficco and one each by Williams, Howard, Hernandez and Raegan Johnston. Howard was credited with two RBIs.

Frankston’s Dillard pitched for all seven innings, allowing seven hits. She had six strikeouts.

Adrianna Estrada pitched three innings for the Lady Flyers, allowing six hits. Johnston came in and pitched four innings, allowing seven hits.

The Maidens are now 6-12 overall and 2-7 in district play.

The two teams were scheduled to meet again Friday, April 8 at 5 p.m. at the FHS field.

FHS varsity, JV boys, girls

sweep first in 19-2A track 

The Frankston Indians and Maidens varsities and junior varsities swept first place Wednesday, April 6 at the District 19-2A High School Track and Field Meet in Cayuga and will be advancing a bunch of athletes to Area competition in Madisonville on Monday, April 18, according to a report made available by Frankston coaches.

The Indians varsity boys captured first place with 206 points. The Maidens varsity girls took first with 145 points. The Junior Varsity Indians took their division with a convincing 288 points and the JV Maidens won first with 176 points.

According to a preliminary count, the Frankston athletes finished as follows:

The varsity boys had seven firsts, five seconds, five thirds and sixth fourth places. The varsity girls had four firsts, seven seconds, one third and three fourth places. The junior varsity boys had 15 firsts, nine seconds, three thirds and three fourth places. The JV girls had nine firsts, three seconds, three thirds and two fourth places.

Coaches and players were reported as being very pleased with the teams’ performance. Coach for the girls is Lisa Hokit and for the boys, Alec Wofford.

The top four winners in the varsity divisions will advance to Area, including members of the relay teams, according to coaches. Junior varsity winners do not advance.

Advancing for the Frankston varsity boys will be Ryan Harper, Isaiah Allen, Tyler Rogers, Cory Morgan, Gio Martinez, Landon Marine, A.J. Advancing for the Frankston varsity girls will be Tia Billingsly, Kaysiah Burnett, Kaylee Davis, Cadence Blase, Kaysie Nabors, Brianna Looney, JerMya Mitchell, Aryonna Hatton, Desirae Hatton, Nyla Muhammad and Trinity Coats.

Advancing for the LaPoynor varsity boys will be Cooper Gracey and Matt Driskell. For the varsity girls, advancing will be Natalie Tobin, Savanna Thaw, Mary Ficco, Tmia Mitchell, Breona Howard and Sydney Reid. 

In the varsity boys division, Kerens finished second with 144 points and Cayuga was third with 114. For the varsity girls, Kerens was second with 137 and Cayuga was third with 126. Cross Roads was fourth with 115. For the JV boys, Cayuga was second with 55 points and Cross Roads third with 23. For the JV girls, Cross Roads was second with 94 points and Martins Mill was third with 16.

LaPoynor finished sixth for the varsity boys, fifth for the varsity girls, fifth for the JV boys and fifth for the JV girls according to final calculations.

Indians hold off LaPoynor 6-4

in District 20-2A game April 5

The Frankston Indians held off a late threat by the LaPoynor Flyers varsity baseball team Tuesday night, April 5 to secure a 6-4 win in a District 20-2A game at LaPoynor, according to a report made available by the Frankston team scorer.

The win boosted the Indians overall record to 14-5 and their district mark to 7-0.

Frankston jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first inning on home runs from Austin Carr and Robert Walker. They added a run in the third and one in the fifth to increase their lead to 4-1. In the top of the sixth, the Tribe scored two more runs on a wild pitch and then another Robert Walker home run to lead 6-1. LaPoynor staged a comeback attempt in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one, and in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs, but their comeback fell short with men on base.

The Indians got 11 hits compared to 4 for the Flyers. Hitting for the Indians were Walker McCann who was 3 of 4 including two doubles, Walker London 2 of 4, both doubles, and Robert Walker 2 of 4 with two home runs. Austin Carr also was 2 of 4, with a homer and a single. Getting singles were Matt Metzig and Conlan Lemay. The Indians had five RBIs, two from Walker.

LaPoynor’s four hits came from Austin Majors with two singles and Jayden Manken and Corbin Moeller with a single apiece. Three Flyers RBIs were credited to Majors, Blaine Musselman and Karson Rhoades.

Pitching for the Indians for 6⅓ innings was Clayton Merritt who allowed three hits and had seven strikeouts. London relieved for ⅔ of an inning, allowing a single hit and striking out one.

LaPoynor pitchers were Kasen Reynolds who allowed seven hits and had four strikeouts in four innings. Kase Johnston relieved and allowed four hits and had three strikeouts in three frames.

The Indians and the Flyers play again at Frankston on Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m.

LAPOYNOR BOYS ADVANCE

   FHS golfer Bandy Bizzell earns

   trip to 2A Region III Tourney 

Bandy Bizzell of Frankston Monday, April 4 qualified for the Regional Golf Tournament with a second place medalist finish in the Girls Division at the District 19-2A Golf Tournament at the Athens Country Club, according to a report by Coach Scotty Albritton. 

Her teammate, Julianna Gould, finished in the top 5 in fourth place overall among individuals.

In 2021, Bizzell had qualified for Regional and the later State Golf tournament as a medalist.

Meanwhile, LaPoynor finished in first place as a team in the Boys Division and qualified for Regional. Frankston was in a tie for third place in the competition.

Neches scores early to defeat

Maidens 10-3 in game April 1

The Frankston Maidens varsity fell victim to an early 6-0 lead by the Neches Lady Tigers and were able to get only three runs while Neches was scoring four more in two late innings to post a 10-3 victory Friday, April 1 at Neches, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

Neches posted 12 hits in the District 20-2A game while the Maidens could only get six hits against Lady Tigers pitching. Both teams had twoa fielding errors.

Leading hitters for the Maidens were Brianna (Bri) Looney and. Julianne Gould who went 2 of 4 at the plate. Gould contributed a two-bagger to her effort and drove in one run. The only other RBI came from Kelsey Sexton who hit safely. Coralyn Happel got the other FHS single.

A big factor was eight strikeouts from Neches pitching and no walks for the Maidens.

Gould pitched six innings for the Maidens.

The loss put the Maidens overall record at 5-12 and their district mark at 1-7.

The Maidens are scheduled to go to LaPoynor on Tuesday, April 5 before returning home on Friday, April 8 against the Lady Flyers. Both games are set for 5 p.m.

Indians put together two wins

over Neches March 29, April 1

The Frankston Indians stayed unbeaten in District 20-2A play on Friday, April 1, taking a 15-0 win over the Neches Tigers on the road after having defeated them 22-3 on Tuesday, March 29 at home, according to information made available by the Indians team scorer.

In the Friday game, the Indians scored in every inning, taking a 3-0 lead in the first and scoring four in the second to go on and climax their scoring with six runs in the top of the fifth to ice the shutout behind the two-hit pitching of Matt Metzig.

The Indians on Tuesday had scored 17 runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the bottom of the second to secure a 22-3 victory over Neches at the FHS field.

Neches had scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead but that was all they would get as Tribe batters put together 15 hits and took advantage of four Neches errors. Two triples by Walker London and a double by Matt Metzig contributed mightily but 12 singles by their teammates added to the final outcome.

Metzig and Jared Cook were 3 of 3 at the plate and Conlan Lemay and Trip Hallmark each were 2 of 3. London was 2 of 2.  Austin Carr and Robert Walker were 1 of 2 and Wade Rackley added another single. The team had 15 RBIs, London and Metzig getting three each. Carr, Walker, Lemay and Hallmark each had two and Rackley one.

Indian pitcher Clayton Merritt allowed only three hits and struck out four in the Tribe victory.

On Friday, the Indians had 11 hits and again capitalized on four walks and four Tigers errors. Carr, Harper, Walker and London, the top of the batting order, each had two hits with London slamming a double for one of his hits. Metzig, Lemay, and Jayden Singletary each had one hit, with Singletary hitting a triple and Lemay a double. The team had 11 RBIs, led by London and Lemay with three and Harper with two.

The two wins increased the Indians’ overall record to 13-5 and their 20-2A mark to 6-0.

The Indians’ next outing will be at LaPoynor on Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m.

Six Frankston High School entries advanced to the Regional Tournament after their performances Thursday, March 31 at the District 19-2A Tennis Tournament at the Frankston courts, according to a report from Coach Christi Coker.

Advancing will be Cael Bruno, Alex Oxford, Bandy Bizzell, Lynsie Bizzell, Maggie Caveness and Luke Ward.

Individual FHS girls help A team

finish 4th at Cushing track meet 

The Frankston A girls finished in fourth place and the Frankston A boys finished in sixth place Thursday, March 31 in the High School Bearkay Relays at Cushing High School, according to results made available by Frankston coaches.

Senior Isaiah Allen finished first in the High Jump for the boys with a leap of 6-0.

For the girls, Tia Billingsly won first in the 100-meter Dash. JerMya Mitchell won first in the Long Jump and the High Jump. Kaylee Davis won first in the Triple Jump. Davis was also second in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. The 4x100-meter Relay Team finished third.

The Frankston B boys team finished in 15th place.

Besides Frankston, teams from a formidable group of other East Texas area teams competed in the meet.

For the boys, Timpson won first place with 166 points. Hemphill was second, Douglass third, Garrison fourth, Carlisle fifth and Frankston A sixth with 35 points.

For the girls, Shelbyville was first with 121 points. Timpson was second, and Douglass third, just three points ahead of Frankston A’s 72 points.

Other teams in the meet were Central Heights, Mount Enterprise, Alto, Brookeland, Cushing, PCA, Neches, Woden, New Summerfield, Tenaha, Martinsville, Gary, Zavala, Chireno and Laneville.

Neches pitching, nine early scores

The Neches Lady Tigers scored nine runs in the first three innings and the host Maidens varsity was able to score only two in the third in a 20-AA softball game to give the Lady Tigers a 9-2 win on Tuesday, March 29, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

The Maidens were held to only two hits with 13 strikeouts administered by Neches pitching. The Maidens did get five walks but had only two RBIs. They had three errors.

The only FHS batters getting hits were Gould and Lynsie Bizzell, both singles.

Jaycie Dillard started and pitched 1 ⅔ innings before Gould relieved, allowing two runs on four hits and posting five strikeouts.

The loss made the Maidens overall record 5-11 and their district mark 1-6.

The Maidens were to go to Neches on April 1 for a return game.

Indian Braves A team wins first

at Cushing track meet March 28

The Frankston Junior High A team boys won first place with 133 points in the Junior High Bearkat Relays at Cushing on Monday, March 28, according to results made available by Frankston coaches.

Garrison finished in second place with 118 points.

Meanwhile, the Frankston A team girls finished in sixth place with 49 points against a 15-team array of East Texas teams. Taking first place in this division was Carlisle with 87 points.

The Frankston B team boys finished in 10th place against boys teams of the same array of competitors. The Frankston B team girls team was in 15th place.

The Frankston Indians overcame a 5-3 Martins Mill lead in the fourth inning, scoring nine big runs and then adding two more to take a 14-6 win over the Mustangs in a high scoring District 20-2A contest at the FHS baseball field Friday, March 25, according to information from the team scorer.

The Indians are now 11-5 overall and 4-0 in 20-2A.

The Indians pounded out nine hits and took advantage of six Martins Mill errors and five walks to register the big win. They also collected 12 RBIs along the way. 

The Mustangs got eight hits off of Indians’ pitching. Except for that big fourth inning, the Martins Mill pitcher had some success against Indian batters, getting 10 strikeouts.

That fourth inning for the Tribe started with an Austin Carr walk. An error put Ryan Harper on the bags and then Robert Walker hit the only extra base hit of the night for the Indians, slamming a double which scored Carr. Moments later Harper scored to even the score at 5-5. Then Clayton Merritt singled to score Walker and the Indians had gone ahead to stay at 6-5. Metzig had walked earlier and moved into scoring position on the play. He scored to make it 7-5 Indians. Conlan Lemay then scored after successive walks to make it 8-5. Carr singled to drive in Merritt and Jayden Singletary, running for catcher Jared Cook, to up the Tribe lead to 10-5. An error allowed Harper to be safe at first and Christian Hernandez, who had walked earlier, was allowed to score, making it 11-5. Carr came home on a pitching error and it was 12-5 when the side was out.

The Indians were to score two more runs, one each in the fifth and sixth innings and Martins Mill managed another run in the top of the fifth to make the final score 14-6 when the Mustangs were held scoreless in the top of the seventh.

The top of the Indians batting order was responsible for six of the hits and eight of the runs. Carr hit 2 of 4, Harper 2 of 5 and Walker 2 of 4, including the key double in the fourth. Merritt was also 2 of 4. Metzig got the other hit for the Tribe. Of the 12 RBIs, Carr, Metzig and Merritt got two each.

Walker London got the win, pitching seven innings and striking out five after he overcame troublesome second and third inning Mustang scoring.

Next game scheduled for the Indians will be against the Neches Tigers, again on the FHS diamond on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m.

Maidens, Martins Mill split on wins

in doubleheader games on March 25

The Frankston Maidens and the Martins Mill Lady Mustangs split in a doubleheader Friday, March 25 in District 20-2A contests at Frankston, the Lady Mustangs winning the first 12-9 and the Maidens replying with a 4-3 victory in the second, according to information provided by Frankston coaches.

In the first contest, the Maidens scored five runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead and then the Lady Mustangs answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The Maidens were held scoreless in the top of the fourth, but Martins Mill put together a five-run performance in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 7-5.

The Maidens were not impressed and they staged a four-run performance in the top of the fifth, regaining the lead 9-8. Maiden pitching shut out the Lady Mustangs in the bottom of the fifth but Martins Mill held the Maidens scoreless in the top of the sixth.

In a fateful turn for the Maidens, the Lady Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain a 12-9 lead which the Maidens were unable to answer in the top of the seventh, giving Martins Mill the narrow victory.

Bats on both sides were active in the contest with Martins Mill getting 20 hits and the Maidens 16. Addi Loebig led Maidens hitters, going 4 of 4  and Julianne Gould and Kaylee Davis were key hitters for the Maidens each getting three hits in five trips to the plate. One of Davis’ hits was a double. Jaycie Dillard got 2 of 4, including a double. Getting singles were Kaysiah Burnett, Kelsey Sexton, Lynsie Bizzell and Brianna (Bri) Looney. Collectively Maidens batters had seven RBIs led by Loebig and Davis, who each had two.

The Maidens’ Dillard pitched four innings, allowing seven runs, 14 hits, and striking out two. Gould pitched two innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

The second game of the doubleheader turned into a nail biter for the Maidens as they trailed early 3-0 going into the bottom of the second. Maidens batters answered with a two-run performance in that frame, narrowing the Martins Mill lead to 3-2.

The Maidens tied things up at 3-3 in the bottom of the third and the score remained that way all the way to the bottom of the sixth.

That’s when the Maidens came through with the winning run. With one out, Sexton slammed a double and Kaitlyn Matthews came in to run for the catcher, Sexton. Next at bat was Loebig who singled, advancing Matthews to third. What would be the winning run came next as Abigail Fletcher singled, scoring Matthews. That would be all the Maidens could get in that inning but when the Lady Mustangs went three-up and three-down in the top of the seventh, the Maidens had their exciting 4-3 victory.

The Maidens had won with four runs from 13 hits. Three of those hits were doubles by Loebig, Sexton and Dillard. Davis, Dillard, Sexton and Loebig were 2 of 3 at the plate and Looney was 2 of 4. Singles were hit by Gould, Coralyn Happel and the one by Fletcher, whose sole single drove in what was the winning run. As it turned out, the four RBIs by Looney, Dillard, Loebig and Fletcher proved key to the win.

Gould pitched for six innings, allowing no runs, four hits and striking out two. Dillard pitched for one inning, allowing three runs on a single hit and striking out two.

The Maidens, now 5-10 overall and 1-5 in district play, host Neches at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29 at the FHS softball field.

Indians break tie in the fifth

to spark 5-2 district victory

The Frankston Indians and the Martins Mill Mustangs battled it out for four innings at 1-1 before Indians batters scored one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to finish with a 5-2 District 20-2A victory on the road Thursday, March 24, according to information from the Indians scorer.

The Indians are now 10-5 for the season and 3-0 in 20-2A play.

Frankston led 1-0 in the top of the second and Martins Mill came up with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie things up. The two teams went scoreless for two innings, before Frankston went ahead 2-1.

In the top of the fifth, Clayton Merritt started things off with a double to center field. Caleb Ramsey, running for Merritt, shortly later scored.

The Mustangs were retired in the bottom of the fifth and the Indians went into the top of the sixth ahead 2-1.

The Indians started off the sixth with a walk by Robert Walker and Walker London doubled to advance Walker to third. Matt Metzig followed with a single which scored Walker to make it 3-1 Frankston. London took third on the play and then Conlan Lemay singled on a bunt to put Indians on second and third. Merritt followed with a walk. London scored to make it 4-1. Later Metzig scored to give the Tribe a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth and the Mustangs were retired after a single.

The lndians could only get a single in their half of the seventh and Martins Mill managed another score after getting only a double in the inning. The Indians had won 5-2.

The Indians got eight hits on the evening to only three for the Mustangs. London had two hits, including a double, and Metzig got a couple of singles. Merritt’s hit was a double, and Austin Carr, Walker and Lemay each had singles. The team was credited with 3 RBIs.

Merritt pitched six innings and was the winning pitcher. Christian Hernandez pitched ⅓ of an inning and Walker pitched ⅔.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Friday, March 25 at 7 p.m. in Frankston.

Frankston girls, varsity boys win

first in Neches Tigers HS Relays

The Frankston girls and the Frankston Blue Team boys won first place in the Neches Tigers High School Relays on Thursday, March 24, according to a report from Frankston coaches.

Also competing in the meet was the Frankston White Team boys, largely composed of junior varsity members, who came in fifth in the meet.

The Frankston girls compiled 148 points and the Blue Team Boys led with 173 points. Cayuga was second for the girls with 126 points and the Cayuga boys were second with 94. The Frankston White Team earned 45 points.

Other teams participating in the meet were Neches, Martins Mill, Slocum, Cross Roads, Wells, Oakwood, Centerville and Laneville.

Indians turn big second inning

into 14-3 win at Alba-Golden

The Frankston Indians varsity baseball team scored seven runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead 7-1 and went on to score a 14-3 win over Alba-Golden in a non-district game Friday, March 18 on the road, according to the Indians scorer.

Alba-Golden was in the lead 1-0 after the first inning but could not score again until the bottom of the sixth when they drove in two runs.

Matt Metzig was on the mound for 5⅓ innings and gave up five hits, threw nine strikeouts and walked only one. Christian Hernandez came in to pitch 1⅔ innings in relief. He allowed Alba-Golden three hits and struck out one.

The Indians had 18 hits in the game. The pitcher, Metzig led Indians hitters going 4 for 4, including a double which scored two in that big second inning, earning two RBIs. Austin Carr had three hits in six trips to the plate. One of those hits was a double in that key second inning which scored two runs to break the 1-1 tie and send the Indians into a 3-1 lead. He was credited with three RBIs for the game. Getting two hits each were Ryan Harper, Robert Walker, Kody Loebig and Jared Cook. Walker London, Conlan Lemay and Clayton Merritt each had hits. One of Cook’s and both of Harper’s hits were doubles and Merritt’s only hit was a two-bagger.

The Indians are now 9-5 overall and 2-0 in District 20-2A. They are scheduled to resume district play on Thursday, March 24 when they journey to Martins Mill for a 5 p.m. game,varsity only, rescheduled from March 22.

Eight-run first sparks Indians’

win over Cross Roads by 15-2

The Frankston Indians boosted their season record to 8-5 and their District 20-2A record to 2-0 with a decisive 15-2 win over Cross Roads on the road Wednesday, March 16, according to a report made available by the Frankston statistician.

The Indians gave a preview of what was about to happen when they jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning. They proceeded to score seven more runs before Cross Roads got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with two runs.

That first inning scoring started with a walk by Austin Carr. Ryan Harper walked  and Robert Walker singled to left field scoring Carr and Harper to give the Indians a quick 2-0 lead. Walker London then walked and Matt Metzig singled.

With two out, Christian Hernandez singled to left field scoring two, making it 4-0. Another score made it 5-0.

Ryan Harper slammed a double to center field, scoring Hernandez, Trip Hallmark and Carr, to end the first inning scoring at 8-0.

In the second inning, Lemay and Clayton Merritt scored, making it 10-0 Indians.

In the third, Carr scored on a single to left field to make it 11-0. Harper, who had walked, and advanced to third, scored during a double play exchange to make it 12-0.

The Indians scored a run in the fourth, Lemay scoring from third on a wild pitch to make it 13-0.

In the top of the fifth, the Indians scored two more runs. With two out, London singled and Clayton Merritt singled, driving in a run, to make it 14-0. 

The final run came when Metzig, who got on base by an error, scored from third on a passed ball to make it 15-0. Cross Roads scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth before the game ended.

The Indians had eight hits, including the Harper double. Walker was 2 for 3 to lead hitters. London, Metzig, Lemay, Clayton Merritt, Hernandez and Hallmark all had singles. Harper and Walker led in RBIs with 3 each. Clayton Merritt and Hernandez were credited with two each.

Walker London pitched a one-hitter, with 8 strikeouts and only three walks.

Indians baseball team scores big

win over Cross Roads March 15

The Frankston Indians varsity baseball team turned 18 hits and 17 RBIs into a 23-2 win over Cross Roads Tuesday, March 15 to post their first district win at the FHS baseball park, according to a report made available by the team statistician.

Clayton Merritt pitched five innings, allowed only three hits, struck out eight and walked only three Bobcat batters.

Cross Roads took a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the first inning and that was all they would be able to get for the remainder of the game.

In their half of that first inning, the Indians scored four runs to go ahead to stay. Their big inning was the bottom of the third when they scored 13. They added six more in the bottom of the fourth to secure the convincing win.

The Indians’ hits came from across the roster but only one was for extra bases. That came on Robert Walker’s only hit of the night, a double, but it produced two RBI.

Leading hitters for the Indians were Merritt with 3 for 3 and three RBI. Conlan Lemay got 3 hits in four trips to the plate and drove in two runs. Walker London along with Matt Metzig and Christian Hernandez were 2 for 2. Hernandez also had two RBI. Hitting singles were Ryan Harper, Walker McCann, Kody Loebig and Jared Cook. Harper had two RBI and London, McCann, Loebig, Cook and Trip Hallmark each were credited with one RBI. Indian batters had seven walks and only two strikeouts. They took advantage of five Bobcat errors.

The Indians are now 7-5 for the season and 1-0 in district play.

They are scheduled to go to Cross Roads for a 6 p.m. game Wednesday, March 16.

Early Cross Roads lead factors

in win over Maidens March 15

The Frankston Maidens softball team on Tuesday, March 15 was held scoreless in the first three innings while Cross Roads was scoring six runs before the Frankston girls could get on the scoreboard, according to a report from information made available by coaches.

The Lady Bobcats went on to score three more runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth while the Maidens were scoring one in the fourth and one in the fifth to give the the Lady Bobcats an 11-2 lead. The Maidens scored four runs in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough and Cross Roads won 11-6.

Cross Roads got 12 hits while Frankston had 5 hits. Center fielder Kaylee Davis led FHS hitters with 2 hits on 3 trips to the plate, including a triple. Addi Loebig had one hit, a double, and drove in two runs. Coralyn Happel’s single also drove in two runs. Kelsey Sexton also got a hit. Jaycie Dillard and Zoey Walker were each credited with RBIs. The Maidens drew 10 walks.

Julianne Gould pitched six innings for the Maidens,

The loss gave the Maidens an 0-3 district record and made them 4-8 overall.

The Maidens were scheduled to play Cross Roads again Wednesday, March 16 at 1 p..m. in Frankston, due to a schedule change.

Kerens downs FHS Maidens

in district meeting March 14

The Frankston Maidens varsity softball team was tied early 2-2 with Kerens but the Lady ‘Cats had a six-run third inning and scored four more runs later to take a 12-2 district win at Kerens Tuesday, March 14, according to a report made available by Frankston coaches.

The Maidens were able to get only those two runs on two hits and a walk. Frankston batters were plagued by six strikeouts and had only a single walk.

Brianna Looney and Kaysiah Burnett each got singles. Coralyn Happel was awarded the only Maidens RBI.

Jaycie Dillard pitched three innings and allowed seven hits and two walks while getting three strikeouts. Julianne Gould pitched two innings and gave up four hits and got one strikeout.

The game had been rescheduled from Friday, March 11. The Maidens were to play Cross Roads in Frankston on Tuesday, March 14

Indians lose three Pool Play

games at Franklin tourney 

The Frankston Indians varsity baseball team was 0-3 in Pool Play Saturday, March 12 after losing 12-2 to Little River Academy in four innings at the Franklin Tournament, according to information made available by the team statistician.

The Indians began Pool Play on Thursday, March 10 and lost to Lorena 10-2 and Caldwell 6-3.

In the Little River Academy game played Saturday morning, the two teams ended the first inning tied 1-1 but Little River scored three runs each in the second and third innings to only one more for the Tribe in the third. Ahead 7-2 Little River scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take their 10-run victory,

The Indians were to get only two hits, both singles, and an RBI in the contest. Little River had eight hits. Hitting for Frankston were Robert Walker and Walker London. London got an RBI. Scoring the two runs for the Tribe were Ryan Harper and Christian Hernandez

Matt Metzig pitched all the way for the Indians.

In the Lorena game, the Indians fell behind early 3-0 before they scored their first run. Lorena increased their lead to 6-1 with three runs in the top of the third. The Indians were to add a run in the bottom of the third, but that was to be their last in the game as Lorena went on to score four more runs to secure the win.

The Indians got seven hits in the game. Austin Carr and Clayton Merritt each had two hits, Merritt with a double. Others getting hits were Robert Walker, Conlan Lemay, all with singles and Christian Hernandez with a double. Walker and Hernandez each drove in a run. Lorena pitching struck had eight strikeouts.

Walker and Walker London were on the mound for the Indians and gave up 12 hits. London pitched for three innings and gave up eight hits and Walker gave up four in relief.

In the Caldwell game, the Indians took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but Caldwell came back to lead 3-2 after one run in the first and two in the second inning. The Indians went four innings without a run and Caldwell scored three in the bottom of the fifth to lead 6-2. The Tribe scored one in the top of the sixth but Caldwell had their 6-3 win.

The Indians out-hit the Hornets 8-3, despite the loss. Carr went 3 of 4 at the plate, including a triple, driving in a run. Lemay had two hits in three at-bats. Hernandez’s only hit was a double. Ryan Harper had a single and drove in a run. Walker had a single.

Pitching for the Tribe for 4⅓ innings was Merritt who struck out six, walked five and allowed only three hits. Hernandez pitched for ⅔ of an inning and had a walk.

Indians, Maidens varsity win

third March 10 at Hawkins

The Frankston varsity Indians and Maidens track and field teams finished in third place and the Indians Junior varsity finished in fourth place in the Thursday, March 10 Hawk Relays in Hawkins, according to information in a report made available by Frankston coaches.

The Indians varsity collected 88 points and the Maidens varsity had 96. The Indians JV also finished with 96 points.

White Oak finished in first place for the boys’ varsity teams with 208 points. Alba-Golden was second with 97. Others in the top six were Tyler Heat with 80, Harleton with 59 and Hawkins with 47.

White Oak also took first place for the girls’ varsity with 237.5 points. Second was Tyler Heat with 107.  Others in the top six were Hawkins with 71.5, T.K. Gorman with 52 and Harleton with 30.

Taking first place for the junior varsity boys was again White Oak with 152. Second was Hawkins with 129 and third was Alba-Golden with 100. Others in the top six were Union Hill with 55,  and Harleton 43.

FHS entry Pauline Passchier

wins first in singles at Athens

Pauline Passchier of Frankston won first place in girls singles at the Athens Tennis Tournament on Wednesday, March 9, according to a report from Coach Christi Coker.

Passchier defeated Reid of Rains 8-0, won over Combs of Athens 8-1 and defeated Anton of Sunnyvale 8-5 to win first place.

In Mixed Doubles Collin Deupree and Kaitlyn Matthews won Consolation.

Bandy Bizzell and Lynsie Bizzell made it to the semifinals in Girls Doubles but were defeated and did not advance.

Coach Coker said others who competed well were Maggie Caveness, Luke Ward, Wila Davis, Kaysie Nabors and Kaylah Redic.

Frankston will go to the Troup Tournament on March 21-23. The District Tournament will be held on March 30 in Frankston.

Kerens hands Maidens loss

in first District 20-2A test

The Frankston Maidens varsity softball team was defeated by Kerens 12-0 in a District 20-2A game at the FHS softball field Wednesday, March 9, according information made available by the team statistician.

The Maidens had four hits during the contest while Kerens was getting 10. Julianne Gould had two singles and Coralyn Happel and Kelsey Sexton each had one. Kaysiah Burnett and Lynsie Bizzell were walked. Kerens pitching posted seven strikeouts.

Kerens got a run in the first inning, two in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth. In the seventh they scored seven runs to enhance their win.

Gould was in the pitching circle for the Maidens for five innings, relieved by Jaycie Dillard for the final two.

The Maidens are now 4-6 overall and 0-1 in district play.

Indians comeback defeats Mildred

12-7 for Fitzgerald Tourney title 

The Frankston Indians varsity baseball team won the championship of the Keno Fitzgerald Memorial Baseball Tournament, coming from behind to defeat the Mildred Eagles 12-7 on Saturday, March 5 at the FHS baseball field, according to information made available by the team statistician.

Named to the All-Tournament team from Frankston were Matt Metzig, Ryan Harper, Robert Walker, and Clayton Merritt. (See Complete Article with Pictures HERE )

Eustace captures championship

of Fitzgerald Softball Tourney

Eustace, the winner in Pool B, earned the championship of the Keno Fitzgerald Memorial Softball Tournament by defeating Cayuga, runnerup in Pool B, 17-2 in Gold Bracket play Saturday, March 5 at the FHS softball field, according to a report from tournament officials.

Cayuga was relegated to runnerup in the tournament as a result.

Meanwhile in Silver Bracket play, Douglass, third place in Pool A, defeated T.K. Gorman, fourth place in Pool A, 10-3 to take consolation honors in the tournament.

Eustace reached the Gold Bracket championship game by defeating the Frankston Maidens, runnerup in Pool A,  9-0 in a mid-afternoon matchup. Cayuga reached the championship game with a 4-3 win over Grace Community, winner in Pool A, in early afternoon bracket play. Gorman was seeded for the consolation game because LaPoynor, third place in Pool B, attended the LaPoynor Flyers Regional Finals basketball game in Athens, scheduled for 1 p.m.

In a previous story, results of Frankston’s 2-1 performance in Pool A on Thursday and Friday were reported.

Other results in Pool Play found Grace Community defeating Douglass 9-2, Frankston 7-3 and T.K. Gorman 19-1. Frankston had won over Gorman 15-0 and Douglass 5-3. Douglass won over Gorman 11-0. Eustace won over LaPoynor 9-0, Cayuga 5-4 and Arp 20-0. Cayuga defeated Arp 8-7 and LaPoynor 14-3. LaPoynor won over Arp 14-1.

The Frankston Maidens had the misfortune of being seeded against the eventual tournament champion in their first round game in Gold Bracket play and lost 9-0. They are now 4-5 for the season.

The Maidens had only two hits against Eustace pitching. Jaycie Dillard and Abigail Fletcher each had singles. Eustace’s pitcher carded 5 strikeouts and walked one.

The Eustace batters drove in 2 runs in the first, 4 in the second and 3 in the fourth inning abbreviated game. They had nine hits against Maidens pitchers Julianne Gould and reliever Dillard.

Indians win two of three in pool

play at Fitzgerald Tournament

The Frankston Indians varsity baseball team won two of three pool play games in the Keno Fitzgerald Memorial Baseball Tournament in Frankston on Thursday, March 3 and Friday morning, March 4, according to results made available by coaches.

The Indians defeated T.K Gorman 14-4 and won over Eustace 9-2 on Thursday evening and lost to Cushing 10-4 on Friday morning.

On Saturday, March 5, Cross Seed Play will feature the No. 4 teams from Pool A and Pool B at 10 a.m. Then at 12:30 p.m. the two No. 3 teams in each pool will play. At 3 p.m., the two No. 2 teams from each pool will compete for third place in the tournament. The tournament will climax at 5:30 p.m. with the Championship game between the two No. 1 finishers in Pool A and Pool B.

In the Gorman pool play game, the Indians scored five runs in the first inning to none for Gorman. The Crusaders scored a run in the second but the Indians scored 3. Gorman scored another in the top of the third, but the Indians scored another 3. The Crusaders managed two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Indians answered with 3 more to give them the 14-4 win, in the abbreviated contest.

Robert Walker was the winning pitcher, allowing 3 hits, striking out 5 and walking one. He was relieved by Christian Hernandez who allowed three hits and struck out 2.

Walker and Trip Halmark led hitters with two each, both of whom had triples. Walker had four RBIs. Also getting three-baggers were Clayton Merritt and Ryan Harper. Walker London got a double. Matt Metzig and Jared Cook singled.

Later in the evening, the Indians defeated Eustace 9-2, largely thanks to the bat of Metzig who got three hits and drove in five runs. One of his hits was a double. Walker London contributed the other Indians hit along with two RBIs. Austin Carr walked twice and Walker, Conlan Lemay, Cook and Hallmark had one walk each.

Clayton Merritt was the winning pitcher, allowing only one hit, striking out four and walking seven.

On Friday morning, the Indians lost to Cushing 10-4. The Tribe could get only five hits against Bearkat pitching. They were behind 6-0 before they could get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Cushing answered with four runs in the top of the third, but the Indians could only score two more before the abbreviated game ended.

Harper led Indians hitters with two singles in three trips to the plate. He also batted in a run. Carr, London and Lemay each singled and London had an RBI.

London pitched three innings for the Tribe, allowing six hits, striking out four and walking four. Walker McCann pitched two innings, allowing four hits, striking out two and walking one. (For a complete schedule of play in the tournament, see  HERE .)

Maidens win two of three games

in Fitzgerald tourney pool play

The Frankston Maidens Varsity softball team posted wins over T.K. Gorman and Douglass but lost to Grace Community in pool play at the Keno Fitzgerald Memorial Softball Tournament Thursday, March 3, according to results made available by coaches.

In their Thursday morning game against Gorman, they won in three innings 15-0 after the game was called according to the 10-run rule.

The Maidens scored two runs in the first, eight in the second and five in the third against the Lady Crusaders.

Julianne Gould was the winning pitcher in the one-hit shutout. She struck out four batters in her three innings on the mound,

The Maidens had 11 hits in 21 times at bat. Coralyn Happel and Jaycie Dillard each had 2 hits to lead the Maidens. Getting one hit each were Kaylee Davis, Zoey Walker, Kelsey Sexton, Gould, Lynsie Bizzell, Kaitlyn Matthews and Kaysiah Burnett. Brianna (Bri) Looney and Burnett were walked twice and Gould and Katelyn Cox once.

In early afternoon, the Maidens lost 7-3 to Grace Community of Tyler, a team they had defeated 9-5 in their season opener. The game went only four innings since pool games are timed, according to Maidens Coach Madison Crisp.

Jaycie Dillard was on the mound for the Maidens, striking out three and walking one. 

Looney and Abigail Fletcher each had two hits. Davis, Happel, Dillard, Addi Loebig and Burnett each had one hit.

Maidens fielders had two errors.

In the late afternoon, the Maidens won over Douglass 5-3 with Gould allowing seven hits and striking out 4 in earning the win.

Gould led the Maidens at the plate with three hits in three times at bat. Loebig had two hits, including a triple. Looney, Davis, Bizzell and Matthews each had singles. Bizzell and Loebig each had two runs batted in and Dillard had one.

The Maidens, now 4-4 for the season, will be awaiting their seeding for the Saturday, March 5 bracket play.

Indians baseball team to compete

in Keno Fitzgerald Tournament

The Frankston Indians varsity baseball team has begun its 2022 schedule and is so far 3-1 in non-district play. They started the year ranked No. 25 in the state and No. 7 in Region III, according to Coach Wes King.

They continue competition Thursday, March 3 in the annual Keno Fitzgerald Memorial Tournament at the Frankston ball park and will be participating in pool play on Thursday and Friday climaxing on Saturday, March 5 with Cross Seed Play and the Championship game.

Four teams will be in Pool A. They are Frankston, T.K. Gorman, Cushing and Eustace. Pool B teams will be Quitman, Central, Mildred and Cumberland. Teams from each pool will be playing each other on Thursday and Friday to determine placing in Cross Seed Play on Saturday, March 5.

The Indians are scheduled to play Cushing at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Then on Friday, they go against T.K. Gorman at 5 p.m. and Eustace at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, March 5, Cross Seed Play will feature the No. 4 teams from Pool A and Pool B at 10 a.m. Then at 12:30 p.m. the two No. 3 teams in each pool will play. At 3 p.m., the two No. 2 teams from each pool will compete for third place in the tournament.

The tournament will climax at 5:30 p.m. with the Championship game between the two No. 1 finishers in Pool A and Pool B.

The Indians have compiled their record so far with wins over Cumberland Academy 15-1 at home. They competed in the Cumberland Tournament and lost in the first round to West Rusk 5-4 before winning over Arp 4-2 and Hughes Springs 10-6. The competition was suspended after pool play due to weather, according to Coach King.

Maidens softball team defeats

Union Hill 16-0 in 3 innings

The Frankston Maidens defeated Union Hill 16-0 Monday, Feb. 28 in a non-district softball game at the FHS softball field, according to information made available by Maiden coaches.

The game was called, under the 10 run rule, in the third inning after the Maidens scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second and 10 in the third inning.

The Maidens posted 13 hits while Jaycie Dillard pitched a no-hit shutout during the three innings. She struck out five Union Hill batters

Leading hitter for the Maidens was Kaylee Davis with 4, two singles and two doubles. Briana (Bri) Looney had two doubles. Zoey Walker had a single and a double. Juliana Gould had a single and a double. Jaycie Dillard had 2 singles. Kelsey Sexton slammed a triple.

The Maidens opened their season with a 9-5 win over Grace Community inTyler. They lost a doubleheader at home to Buffalo 13-6 and 11-8 and  then went to Lindale and fell 22-2. All were non-district games.

They are now 2-3 for the season so far.

The Maidens will be in the Keno Fitzgerald Memorial Softball Tournament on Thursday thru Saturday, March 3-5 in pool play with teams from Grace Community, T.K. Gorman and Douglass in Pool A and Eustace, Cayuga, LaPoynor and Arp in Pool B.
