Indians defeat Maud 5-1 in first

game of 2A Area series on May 11

The Frankston Indians baseball team broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring four runs and then holding off the Maud Cardinals in the top of the seventh, to win 5-1 in the first game of the best-of-three Class 2A Area series at Elysian Fields Thursday evening, May 11, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The Indians and Cardinals square off again on Friday, May 12 at 7 p.m., in Game 2, also at Elysian Fields. A win by the Tribe then would take the series. Otherwise, they would face a third game on Saturday, May 13, if needed.

The two teams had held each other scoreless in three innings and then Maud scored a run in their half of the fourth to go ahead 1-0. However the Indians’ Ryan Harper had other plans as he slammed a home run on a fly ball to left field to even things at 1-1.

Tribe pitcher Walker McCann struck out three of five Cardinal batters in the top of the sixth, setting up a four-run surge in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.  Again McCann retired three of five batters in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

The Indians got extra base hits from Harper’s solo home run and a double by Austin Carr and got four singles, one each from Carr and Harper and a single apiece by Christian Hernandez and Matt Metzig for six hits. They also got six walks and five earned runs.

McCann went the distance on the mound for the Indians allowing only three hits and walking only four. He had seven strikeouts, throwing 63 strikes in 107 pitches.

The go-ahead and winning runs came in the sixth inning for the Tribe. The surge started with a walk by Carson Bizzell. After one out, Hernandez singled to put two men on base. Then Metzig singled to fill the bases with one out. After a pop out, Carr singled, scoring Bizzell from third and Caleb Ramsey, running for Hernandez,  scored from second. The Indians led 3-1 when Harper singled and Metzig scored and Carr scored on the throw. That gave the Indians their 5-1 winning margin before a strikeout ended the inning.

Graham Hawkins led Maud scorers with two singles and Brock Windham had the other hit, a double.

Evan Acosta pitched 5⅓ innings for the Cardinals, allowing three hits, three earned runs and walking six. He had one strikeout. Rip Thomas relieved for ⅔ of an inning, allowing three hits, two earned runs and no walks. He struck out one.

Tribe 7th inning earns Game 2

Bi-District crown over Overton

The Frankston Indians baseball team turned a seventh inning comeback into a Game 2 win over Overton 8-6 which earned the Tribe a 2A Bi-District Championship on Thursday, May 4 in games at Rusk High School, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

The key win came after the Indians had defeated Overton in Game 1 by an impressive 11-1 margin minutes earlier in the best-of-three series.

ln Game 2, the Tribe appeared to be in trouble early in the game, when Overton took a 5-1 lead after four innings. However, in the fifth inning, the Indians scored two runs to narrow the Overton lead to 5-3. The Mustangs added another run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-3, making it imperative that the Indians score at least three runs in the top of the seventh to have a chance for a win.

They did that and then some. The Frankston team put together five runs and held the Mustangs in the bottom of the seventh to earn an 8-6 victory, win the series and the Class 2A Bi-District championship.

The Indians had to use three pitchers in the game with reliever Christian Hernandez taking to the mound after three innings. He proceeded to allow the Mustangs only two hits and one run before Walker London took over in the seventh to allow only a single hit while getting a couple of strikeouts to seal the victory.

Overton dominated at the plate overall with 11 hits, 8 in the early innings. The Indians had only six hits and only two of their runs were earned runs. Four Overton errors, along with five walks helped the Tribe cause.

Doubles by Hernandez and London and singles by London, Austin Carr, Ryan Harper and Conlan Lemay along with RBI by Lemay, London, Carson Bizzell and Hernandez fueled the Tribe offense. Defensively, they only had two errors in the field.

The two runs in the fifth put the Indians closer to a win. An error allowed McCann to be safe at first. Then Carr singled, followed by a fielder’s choice which put Carr on second and Harper safe at first but resulted in one out. Then Lemay singled to score Carr. A ground out, with one away, allowed Harper to score the second run.

In the top of the seventh, with one out, Carr walked, followed by a Harper single which put Carr in scoring position. Then Lemay bunted and reached first on an error allowing Carr and Harper to score. It was 6-5 with one on base when London was intentionally walked, followed by a Bizzell sacrifice fly which allowed Lemay to score and tie things at 6-6 with two outs. An error allowed Jared Cook to be safe at first on a fly and London scored, giving the Indians their first lead 7-6. Then  a Hernandez double drove in an insurance run by Cook to make it 8-6, Indians.

In the bottom of the seventh, London faced four batters, and all Overton could get was a single, sandwiched between a fly out and a couple of London strikeouts.

In Game 1, the Indians jumped out to a big lead after Overton went three up and three down on three strikeouts by Tribe pitcher Walker McCann.

The Indians scored seven runs in the bottom of the first to lead 7-0 and Overton came back with their only score of the game in their half of the second inning. Frankston led 7-1 and neither team scored more runs until the bottom of the fifth when the Tribe scored four runs to lead 11-1 and end the game on the 10-run rule.

The Indians piled up 11 hits and had no errors in the field during the abbreviated game.

Carson Bizzell and Christian Hernandez each had a double, their only hits of the evening. Walker London was 3 for 3, all singles, to lead hitters. He also led in RBI with 3. Bizzell, Hernandez and and McCann had 2 RBI each. Austin Carr, Ryan Harper, Conlan Lemay, Jared Cook, Matt Metzig and McCann each had singles.

McCann pitched all 5 innings, allowing only 3 hits and walking one. He struck out 9.

Isaiah Hawkins led Overton hitters going 2 for 2, both singles. Mason Rowe got the other single for the Mustangs.

Landon Hill pitched 4⅔ innings for Overton and allowed 10 hits, 10 earned runs and 4 walks. He struck out 3. Brody Brown relieved in the seventh inning and gave up a hit, an earned run and walked 2.

In the big first inning, Carr and Harper started things for the Indians with a walk and then Conlan Lemay’s bunt single filled the bases. When Walker London singled, Carr scored and Harper went home on the throw. Bizzell got his double to score London. Lemay scored on an error by the catcher. After a Cook single, Hernandez got his double and Bizzell and Bradlee Gould, running for catcher Cook, went home. After a Metzig single, Hernandez scored on a line out with none away. The Tribe got another single by Harper before a pop out and a fly out ended the inning.

The four-run fifth inning started for the Indians after a walk and a couple of outs. Gould, running for Cook, scored on a McCann single. Carr was hit by a pitch and when Harper singled, Tim Ryals, running for pitcher McCann, scored. When Lemay walked, the bases were loaded with two out. London was hit by a pitch forcing home Carr. When Bizzell walked, Harper scored the 11th run. The Indians had won 11-1 in the five-inning game.

Freshman Howie went the distance in the pitching circle, allowing those 7 Rivercrest hits and walking only one. She struck out seven. Howie pitched 67 strikes out of 96 pitches.

Rivercrest’s pitcher gave up the 11 hits, no walks and she struck out 5. She threw 69 strikes in 97 pitches.

The Maidens’ two runs in the first inning came when Davis singled, followed by a Jenna Gould single, scoring Davis on the throw. A Howie single, followed by a Burnett single scored Gould for the second run before two outs ended the inning.

Then came the two more runs in the third on the double by Jenna Gould and the Howie home run.

The insurance run in the top of the seventh came with two outs. First Jenna Gould singled and went to second on the throw. Then Lindsey singled to score Gould. Maidens softball team defeats

Neches 3-1 to hold 20-2A lead

The Frankston Maidens varsity softball team increased their District 20-2A record to 10-1 and their season mark to 16-11 with a 3-1 victory over Neches on Wednesday, April 19 at home, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

It was Senior Night at Frankston with seniors Lynsie Bizzell, Jacey Dillard and Savannah Lindsey honored in ceremonies prior to the game. (See Photo HERE )

The Maidens scored a run in each of the first, third and fourth innings to have enough to take the win. Neches scored their only run in the top of the sixth.

Each team’s pitchers went the distance and held their opponents to seven hits, but the Maidens were able to turn their hits and other opportunities into timely runs.

Kinley Howie was in the pitching circle for the Maidens and, besides the seven hits, she walked only two. She had six strikeouts. Neches’ Jessi Sumpter also gave up seven hits. She walked only one and had 10 strikeouts.

The Maidens’ hitting was led by Addi Loebig with 3 of 3, including two doubles and Jenna Gould with 2 of 3, also with a double. Savannah Lindsey and Howie each contributed singles.

Sumpter and Joely Jenkins led hitters for Neches, each with 2 of 3, Sumpter with a double. Also getting a double was Kacie Trimble. Libby Raine and Vinnie Mayhall each had singles.

The Maidens were errorless in the field while Neches carded a single error.

Scoring by the Frankston girls started in the bottom of the first after Howie had struck out two and a Neches runner, on base with one of two singles, was caught stealing third in their half of the frame

Loebig opened the Maidens’ time at bat with a double. Then after an out, Jenna Gould singled to right field allowing Loebig to score. It was 1–0 Maidens.

Neither team scored in the second and, except for a walk, Neches was retired in the top of the third. Then in the bottom of the third, Loebig got her second double with one out. After another out, Jenna Gould doubled to score Loebig another time. That made it 2-0, Maidens, after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, Neches’ Trimble doubled with one out. However, two outs later, Neches had not scored.

Then in the bottom of the fourth, the Maidens were to score what would be their third run. Howie started things with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Neches error on an ensuing ground out with one away allowed Howie to score. A strikeout retired the Maidens but they led 3-0.

Neither team scored in the fifth but Neches got its first and only run in the top of the sixth. Sumpter singled and a ground out allowed the pitcher to go to second. Then Jenkins singled with one away and Sumpter went to third. With two outs and runners on second and third, Mayhall singled to score Sumpter. A walk loaded the bases, but a leaping catch by Jenna Gould for a line out to left field ended the threat.

The Maidens only got a single by Lindsey in their half of the sixth and it was 3-1, Maidens, going into the top of the seventh.

Neches had two outs on a fly out and a ground out when Sumpter doubled in their half of the seventh. However, a third out ended the threat and the game with a 3-1 Maidens victory.

The Maidens (16-11, 10-1), leading in the District, go to Neches (9-3, 9-2) in the regular season finale on Friday, April 21 at 4 p.m.

The Indians were unable to answer in their half of the fourth, despite getting three players on base with two out.

Neither team could score for the remainder of the game and the 5-0 lead proved enough for the win by Cayuga

Tribe turns extra inning runs

into victory over Cayuga 8-5

The Frankston Indians baseball team appeared to have a comfortable 5-2 lead over the Cayuga Wildcats on Friday, April 14, going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Wildcats came back with three runs in their half of the seventh to tie things at 5-5 in regulation.

However, the Indians turned the nailbiter into victory with three runs in their half of the eighth and then held off the Wildcats in the bottom of the eighth for an 8-5 win to remain undefeated in District 20-2A play, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

Errors and other miscues played a big part in the swings in the late going. Overall the Tribe had 3 errors but the Wildcats had 6 in the game, some key ones in the last inning.

The Tribe had 11 hits in the game but only had three earned runs. The Wildcats had only two earned runs while getting 7 hits.

All the Indians’ hits were singles, Ryan Harper with 4 of 4, Carson Bizzell and Matt Metzig each with 2 of 4. Walker London, Jared Cook and Christian Hernandez got the other 3 hits with one each.

Things went south for the Tribe in the bottom of the seventh after leading 5-2 for 6½ innings. In the bottom of the seventh, Cayuga came back with three runs to tie things at 5-5. Two singles, a couple of walks and a Tribe error got the Wildcats three runs to earn the tie.

In the top of the extra inning, the Indians got three runs themselves to earn what would be their 8-5 win. Metzig led off with a single and Walker McCann walked. Following an out on a fielder’s choice play and an error Metzig scored. Then Harper walked to put two on base. With one out, a strikeout made it two, but during the play, Austin Carr scored on an error. Then Harper scored on a wild pitch to give the Indians their three run advantage.

The bases were loaded on a single by the Wildcats after a couple of walks in their half of the eighth, but relieving pitcher Hernandez, with one out, threw a strikeout and forced a fly out to end the inning and the game.

Maidens dominate Martins Mill

while Howie pitches 10-0 shutout

A five-run first inning and five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings gave the Frankston Maidens a 10-0 District 20-2A victory over Martins Mill at home Tuesday, April 11, according to information made available by Frankston coaches.

Maidens freshman pitcher Kinley Howie pitched a shutout, allowing the Lady Mustangs only five hits, no walks while recording six strikeouts during her six innings in the pitching circle.

Maidens batters had 14 hits, including doubles by Coralyn Happel and Savannah Lindsey. Addi Loebig and Happel were 3 of 4 at the plate. Kaylee Davis and Howie were 2 of 3. Lindsey was 2 of 4. Kaysiah Burnett and Ashley Fridinger each contributed singles. Howie was credited with three RBI. Happel and Lindsey had two each and Burnett and Fridinger drove in one each.

Gurley and Lindsey each had doubles to lead the Lady Mustang hitters.

Gurley went the distance in the pitching circle for Martins Mill, walking two and recording three strikeouts.

The Maidens started things off, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. Loebig opened with a single and Kaylee Davis was awarded first when hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout, Lindsey singled in Loebig. Then Howie singled to score Davis and Lindsey from scoring positions. Burnett’s single scored Howie and then Happel doubled to score Burnett. At the end of the first, the Maidens led 5-0.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth when the Maidens picked up two more. With one out, Lindsey doubled and Howie singled to score Lindsey. With two outs, Happel singled to send Howie to second and then Fridinger singled to score Howie. It was 7-0 Maidens going into the sixth.

Metzig one-hit shutout, Harper

homer key Tribe win at Kerens

Ryan Harper drove in two runs with a third inning home run and Matt Metzig pitched a one-hit shutout to give the Frankston Indians baseball team a 2-0 victory in a pitchers’ duel Tuesday, April 11 at Kerens, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

While Metzig allowed the Bobcats only one hit, Kerens’ starting pitcher Kannon Ritchie allowed the Indians only two hits. The two earned runs in the third inning, thanks to Harper and an earlier double by Austin Carr, proved the difference. The Bobcats had runners on base at times but couldn’t get them across the plate.

It was three up and three down in the first inning for both teams. Except for a walk, Ritchie retired the Indians in the second.  J.J. Hightower’s double and a error which put another man on base was all the Bobcats could get in their half of the second.

Then in the top of the third, with two out, Carr doubled. Next up was Harper who, after two strikes, slammed a home run on a fly ball to left field, scoring Carr. Harper picked up a couple of RBI and the two Indians had scored what would be the winning runs.

Neither team could do much against the other’s pitching for the remainder of the way and, while Kerens had runners on base, none could score, thanks to Metzig’s pitching and some timely defensive plays by the Indians in the field.  Metzig had 6 strikeouts and Kannon and reliever Krayton Ritchie combined for 18 strikeouts. Metzig walked four and Kannon Ritchie walked three.

The Indians (16-4, 7-0) journey to Cayuga for another 20-2A game on Friday, April 14.

Three-run fifth inning secures

5-3 Tribe victory over Kerens

The Frankston Indians baseball team and the Kerens Bobcats were tied at 2-2 for 4½ innings but the Indians scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take what was to be a 5-3 victory on Monday, April 10, according to information made available by the Frankston scorer.

Indians relief pitcher Walker London was able to hold the Bobcats to only one more run in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Despite the win, the Bobcats outhit the Indians 7-3 and walked five times but only got two earned runs.

The three Tribe hits came on a double by London  and singles by Conlan Lemay and Matt Metzig. However, London had 2 RBI and Carson Bizzell, Christian Hernandez and Metzig one each to drive in the winning runs.

Kerens scored first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Indians came back to score two runs in their half of the frame and go ahead briefly 2-1. Kerens answered in the top of the second with a run to tie things at 2-2. It was to stay knotted until the bottom of the fifth when the Indians scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead.

The first inning runs by the Tribe came when Ryan Harper walked and Lemay was hit by a pitch putting two runners on. Then London doubled to score Harper. With one out, a ground out allowed Lemay to score the second run.

Frankston went ahead to stay with those three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The runs started when Austin Carr walked and Harper was safe at first on a fielder’s choice. A bunt single by Lemay loaded the bases. With no outs, London was sent to first, hit by a pitch, scoring Carr from third. Following a strikeout, Hernandez flied out to right field, allowing Harper to score and Lemay to go to third. A key single by Metzig scored Lemay for the third run. A ground out ended the Indians scoring, but they led 5-2.

Kerens was able to score one run in the top of the seventh. It came on a single which scored a Bobcat who had opened the inning with a walk. However, London was able to strike out one batter with one away and then get a fly out to retire the side and secure the win.

Walker McCann went 5⅓ innings on the mound, allowing 5 hits and walking 4. He struck out 6. London relieved for 1⅔ innings, allowing two hits and walking one but allowing only one run. He had one strikeout.

Kerens pitching gave up only three hits, but they were timely for the Tribe, allowing 5 earned runs. The two Bobcats pitchers had 7 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Indians’ seven-run first inning

keys 7-6 road win over Sabine

The Frankston Indians baseball team defeated the Sabine Cardinals 7-6 Wednesday, March 15 in a non-district game on the road to increase their season record to 9-4, according to information made available by team scorers.

The Indians jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and, as it turned out, that’s all the scoring they needed to do to win the game.

Sabine got a run in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second. They threatened the Indians lead when they scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. However, the Indians were able to keep the Cardinals from scoring in the next two innings to preserve the win.

The Indians got their seven runs and had six hits in the game while Sabine was hitting safely eight times.

Ryan Harper’s double was the only extra base hit for the Indians. He went on to get two singles to lead the Indians’ batters. Austin Carr, Christian Hernandez and Jared Cook each had singles. The Tribe benefitted from 13 bases on balls. Carr was credited with two RBI. Five other players had one RBI each.

The Indians’ most successful inning, the first, turned out to be the only frame they needed to gain their victory. Seven walks contributed mightily to their success in that inning.

Two walks, by Carr and Conlan Lemay, put runners on base but a ground out and a line out made it appear they would be stranded. Then Carson Bizzell walked to load the bases after Carr and Lemay had advanced to second and third on a passed ball. The Indians got another walk by Hernandez which scored Carr. Matt Metzig then walked to score Lemay. Cook walked to score Bizzell and Aydan Lewis walked to score Hernandez.

Austin Carr got the first hit of the inning as he singled to score Caleb Ramsey, running for pitcher Metzig, and Tristan McCoy, running for catcher Cook.

That’s when Harper got his double which scored Lewis before the Indians finally  grounded out to end the seven-run inning.

Sabine hitters were busy after that. They got three doubles and a home run as well as four more hits along the way.

Metzig pitched 4⅓ innings for the Indians and got credit for the win. He allowed four hits and walked two and also had a strikeout. Walker London came in for 2⅔ innings, allowing four hits and walking one. He had three strikeouts.

Kerens scored first in the game in the first inning, but the Maidens came back in the top of the third to go ahead 2-1. Davis scored from third on a wild pitch and Jenna Gould scored from third on a passed ball. Both had walked earlier.

Then Kerens had a big inning, scoring five runs to regain the lead 6-2.

The Maidens got another run in the fourth, when Coralyn Happel scored from third when Bizzell reached first on a third strike drop to make it 6-3.

They added four in the fifth to take the lead 7-6. Davis tripled and scored on a Jenna Gould single. Gould scored on a Howie double. Howie scored from a Happel single. After a  Julianna Gould single, Happel scored from third.

Kerens answered with a 7-run surge in the bottom of the fifth to make it 13-7, but, as it turned out, that was to be all their scoring.

The Maidens were to get four runs in the top of the sixth to narrow the ‘Cats lead to 13-11. After a walk by Loebig, Davis singled and a Jenna Gould single scored Loebig. Davis scored on a fielder’s choice. Gould scored on a single and Howie scored on a passed ball. That set up the three-run seventh inning victory when Kerens did not score another run.

The Maidens had 14 runs on 11 hits and overcame six errors. Kerens had 13 runs on 16 hits and were errorless.

Davis had a triple and Happel and Howie each had a double. Davis and Jenna Gould each had 3 of 4 hits at bat and Happel and Julianna Gould each had 2. Jenna Gould and Howie led with 3 RBI each.

Howie went the distance on the mound and struck out 5 and walked only 2.

Indians take 7-6 win in ninth

in comeback over LaPoynor

The Frankston Indians staged a ninth inning victory over the LaPoynor Flyers  7-6 at LaPoynor Tuesday night, March 7, thanks to an RBI double in the top of the ninth and three strikeouts by freshman pitcher Carson Bizzell which retired the Flyers, according to information provided by the Indians scorer.

The Indians were tied 6-6 with the Flyers at the end of seven innings after going into their half of the seventh behind 4-6. Neither team could score in the eighth inning, but Walker London doubled and then Bizzell doubled to score London for what would be the winning run.

All that was needed for a win was to hold the Flyers scoreless in the bottom of the ninth. Bizzell came in to pitch and threw three strikeouts to retire the Flyers and secure the win. The only Flyers threat came with a walk between the first and second strikeout.

The Indians jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning when Jared Cook and Christian Hernandez walked, Bradlee Gould running for catcher Cook. Then Walker McCann homered to center field to score Hernandez and Gould. It was 3-0, Indians when Austin Carr tripled to right field. Moments later, Conlan Lemay reached first on an error and Carr scored to make it 4-0 early for the Indians.

The Flyers were to come back and go ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the third. Scoring were Kasen Reynolds, Karson Rhoades, David Williams, Case Partridge and Jayden Mankin.

LaPoynor increased their lead in the fifth with a run when Jacob Parrott scored from third on a passed ball giving the Flyers a 6-4 lead.

The Indians came back in the top of the seventh to tie things at 6-6. Ryan Harper led off with a single. Then pitcher Walker London walked and Caleb Ramsey came in as a courtesy runner. Moments later Hernandez doubled to left field and Harper and Ramsey scored.

The Flyers were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh and eighth and that set up the drama of the top of the ninth when Bizzell’s double scored London for what would be the winning run. The Flyers had a chance in the bottom of the ninth but Bizzell, pitching in relief, struck out three to secure the win.

The Indians had 7 runs on 10 hits while the Flyers had 6 runs on 6 hits. The Indians had an error and the Flyers 2.

Indian bats got a homer from McCann, a triple by Carr and doubles by Cook, Bizzell, Carr, Hernandez and London. Carr went 3 of 5 at the plate to lead Tribe hitters. McCann’s 3-run homer gave him the lead in RBI. Hernandez had 2 RBI.

London went 2 ⅔ innings on the mound, McCann pitched 5 ⅓ and Bizzell finished out in the ninth.

For the Flyers, Mankin and Rustin Pittman had doubles. Pittman and Rhoades led with 2 hits each. Mankin had 3 RBI to lead the Flyers.
