prominent in All-District honors

The Region III Champion LaPoynor Flyers and the Region III Quarterfinals Champion Frankston Indians figured prominently in  selections for District 19-2A All-District honors, according to a list released by district coaches.

Frankston Coach Scotty Albritton and LaPoynor Coach Jim Reid were named Co-Coaches of the Year among numerous Indians and Flyers making the elite list.

LaPoynor Senior Kase Johnston and Flyers Junior Cooper Gracey head the list of superlatives as Co-Most Valuable Players. Dijuan Whitehead, Flyers junior, shared the title of Offensive Player of the Year with freshman Jak Kinder of Martins Mill.

Indians junior Benton Allen was named Defensive Player of the Year and junior Kody Loebig shared 6th Man of the Year with junior Blake Butcher of Martins Mill.

Selected as Newcomer of the Year was JaCorie Bradley, Cayuga freshman.

Three Frankston players and three LaPoynor players were named to the 19-2A First Team. Indians named were senior Cael Bruno, junior Caleb Ramsey and freshman Jake Westbrook and Flyers selected were freshman Cort Reid and juniors Evan Almeida and Matt Driskell.

Also named were junior Alex Tyner and senior Colton Powers of Martins Mill; junior Chase Harrell of Cayuga and freshman Muziq Gunnell of Kerens.

Selected for the Second Team from Frankston was senior Isaiah Allen. Others selected were sophomore Graham Story and seniors Spencer Calcoat and Greg Garrett, all of Cayuga; freshman Nehemiah Massey and senior A.J. Stevens, both of Kerens;  Rizzy Brown and Bub LaTham, both of Cross Roads and juniors Nate Reiser and Jose Perez, both of Martins Mill.

Maidens, Lady Flyers acclaimed

with 19-2A All-District honors

Girls coaches for the Frankston Maidens and the LaPoynor Lady Flyers Monday, March 7 released their lists of players selected for District 19-2A All-District Basketball Honors.

Each coach had Superlatives to report on the list.

Coach Jammie Maze said Lady Flyers junior Markayla Hurd was selected as “Offensive Player of the Year” for the Region III Quarterfinals champions.

Frankston Coach Christi Coker reported that freshman Wila Davis was named “Newcomer of the Year” for the Maidens who advanced to a Bi-district playoff game as third seed in the district.

Frankston and LaPoynor each had two players selected for First Team and two for Second Team in All-District selections.

Senior guard Brianna (Bri) Looney and junior forward Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton were selected for the First Team for the Maidens. Sophomores Kitty Eldridge and Payton Maze received First Team honors for the Lady Flyers.

Chosen for the Second Team for the Lady Flyers were senior Natalie Tobin and junior T’mia Mitchell.  Maidens’  Second Team selections were senior Maggie Caveness and junior Kaylee Davis.

Coach Coker also had additional selections for the Maidens.

Maidens selected for Honorable Mention were senior post Kelsey Sexton, junior guard Lynsie Bizzell and sophomores guard Bandy Bizzell and post Mya Mitchell.

The Frankston coach said eight players were selected for Academic All-District. They are Tia Billingsly, Maggie Caveness, Kelsey Sexton, Kaylee Davis, Bandy Bizzell, Lynsie Bizzell, Ja’Shalyn Hatton and Wila Davis.

Coach Coker reported that Maidens players Billingsly, Caveness and Sexton were selected for Texas Assn. of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Academic All State for averages of 92 or higher. Caveness was selected for the Texas Girls Coaches Assn. (TGCA) Academic All State for an average of 94 or higher.

Martins Mill, who advanced to the Class 2A State Semifinals, had three superlatives. They were Most Valuable Player Jada Celsur, a senior; Defensive Player of the Year Mattie Burns, a junior; and Coach of the Year Tommy Cross.

Martins Mill had three other players selected for the First Team: senior Kylee Lookabaugh, junior Libby Rogers and sophomore Kate Lindsey. Cross Roads freshman Brook Locke, Cayuga senior Arian Thompson and Kerens sophomore Tiani Hall were also selected.

Selected for the Second Team for Martins Mill were freshmen Ruthie Mein and Reese Hathaway. Cross Roads selections were senior Brooke Lawrence and freshman Alanah Logan. Mackenzie Legard, Cayuga junior, and Teniyah Washington, Kerens senior, were also selected.  (See Maidens honorees in graphic HERE )

Quarterfinals champion Indians

fall to Beckville in semifinals test

The Frankston Indians saw their successful basketball season come to an end Friday night, March 4 when they fell to the Beckville Bearkats 62-47 in the Region III Class 2A Semifinals in Athens, according to a report from Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

It had been a dream season for the Indians who finished District 19-2A seeded in third place with a 7-3 record and finished the season overall at 29-8. They went into the playoffs with first seed LaPoynor and second seed Martins Mill and battled their way into the regional semifinals with wins over Lovelady 51-32 in bi-district, over Rosebud-Lott 49-44 in Area competition and then they won the Regional Quarterfinals game over a good Martins Mill 19-2A team 32-27. They had hopes of another win in the Regional Semifinals but it was not to be.

The loss to Beckville did not dim the admiration of fans for what the Indians had accomplished and Coach Albritton praised his team for their accomplishments.

“I was very proud of the guys this season,” the coach said. “I was proud of how hard they played every game and how they bought in to playing defense the way they did.”

The coach noted that the Indians had given up an average of only 34.3 points per game.

“They grew up and came together as a team and also grew up as young men,” he said. “It was a pleasure to go into battle with them.”

Beckville had been considered a top-ranked team in the state, as well as the region and they lived up to their credentials from the opening buzzer.

In the first quarter, they outscored the Indians 17-9 and by halftime were ahead 35-22. However, in the second half, the Indians gave them a battle. The two teams tied at 10-10 in the third to make it 45-32, but the Indians had to overcome that 13-point lead in the final period. The Indians gave it a try but the Bearkats outscored them 17-15 to secure their win.

In his last Indians basketball game, senior Cael Bruno led his team in scoring with 16 points, including five 2-point goals in the first half and two three-point baskets in the fourth. Junior Benton Allen scored 9, four 2s and a free throw. Freshman Jake Westbrook scored 8, sinking two 3-pointers and one inside. Senior Isaiah Allen and junior Caleb Ramsey each scored 7, Allen with a three-pointer and a couple of baskets inside and Ramsey with two inside and a 3 of 4 trip to the free throw line.

The Indians were Region III Quarterfinals champions and a Regional Semifinalist.

Big fourth quarter determines

Indians win over Martins Mill

The Frankston Indians continued to use a strong defense and effective shot selection Tuesday, March 1 to defeat the second seeded 19-2A Martins Mill Mustangs 32-27 in a Region III Quarterfinals basketball thriller at Athens High School, according to a report from Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians, who came out of District 19-2A as third seed with a 7-3 record behind the second-seeded Mustangs, increased their overall season record to 29-7. It was the third time the Indians had played Martins Mill, narrowly losing at the Mustangs’ home court and then defeating Martins Mill 42-38 in the district finale on the FHS court.

The Indians now face the first seed out of District 21-2A, Beckville, in a Region III Semifinals playoff game at 8 p.m. Friday, March 4 at Athens High School.

In the quarterfinals game against Martins Mill the Indians’ defense was impressive throughout, holding the often explosive Mustangs to single digits in three of the four quarters. Particularly impressive was the fourth quarter, when the Tribe defense didn’t allow Martins Mill a single point while they were sinking 13 key points.

Coach Albritton praised his team for that big quarter.

“We played amazing defense in the fourth and made some big shots,” he said.

Junior Caleb Ramsey had a big night, particularly in that final quarter. He scored 9 of his total 13 points in the fourth, including two 3–pointers and a 3 of 4 trip to the free throw line. Some of those free throws were decisive in capping the Tribe 5-point victory. Only three other players scored for the Tribe, but, combined with stellar defensive play, that proved enough. Senior Cael Bruno scored 7, three inside goals and a free throw. Freshman Jake Westbrook found the range with two 3-point goals for 6 points. Benton Allen rounded out the scoring with two goals inside and a 2 of 2 performance at the free throw line, all in the tight first half, for another 6 points.

The Indians defense did not allow a single Mustangs player to score in the double figures.

Indians hold off Rosebud-Lott surge

to capture Class 2A Area game 49-44

The Frankston Indians advanced to the Class 2A Region III Quarterfinals Friday, Feb. 25, holding on despite a fourth quarter scoring surge by Rosebud-Lott to take a 49-44 victory in Area competition at Jewett Leon High School, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians’ win gives them a 26-7 record overall and sets up a third matchup with their District 19-2A runnerup Martins Mill, which defeated Marlin 85-52 Friday night at Navarro College in Corsicana. The Indians will play Martins Mill Tuesday, March 1 at 8 p.m. at Athens High School. The two teams took home and home narrow wins during the district schedule.

Against Rosebud-Lott, the Indians jumped out to a 12-4 first quarter lead, thanks to scoring by senior Cael Bruno and junior Caleb Ramsey. Bruno and Ramsey each sank three-point goals and two-point baskets and Bruno sank 2 free throws in 2 attempts to earn their lead. The two teams fought it out in the second quarter, each with 17 points but the Indians had a 29-21 lead at halftime.

Neither team could score much in the third quarter but the Indians managed a 9-2 advantage thanks to a three-pointer and a couple of baskets inside by Bruno and a two-pointer by Benton Allen. The only Rosebud-Lott scores came on a couple of free throws.

Rosebud-Lott found the range in the fourth quarter with 21 points but senior Isaiah Allen sank two baskets inside and Bruno got one, and freshman Jake Westbrook nailed a three-pointer and went 2 of 2 at the free throw line to give the Indians 11, enough points to preserve their 38-23 lead at the end of the third quarter and take the 5-point victory.

Three Indians scored in double figures while only one Rosebud-Lott player could score in double digits. Bruno led Tribe scorers with 16 points followed closely by a 15-point showing by Westbrook. Each were 2 of 3 at the free throw line to go with their combined 4 three-point goals. Ramsey score 10 on two 3s and a couple of 2s. Isaiah Allen’s two key baskets in the fourth period gave him 4. Benton Allen and Kason Newport each contributed 2 points to round out the scoring for the Tribe.

Indians win bi-district playoff

contest, down Lovelady 51-32

Frankston Indians won the first round of the Class 2A playoffs Tuesday, Feb. 22 with a 51-32 victory in a bi-district game with District 20-2A second seed Lovelady at Fairfield, according to a report from Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians now advance into the second round for an Area game with Rosebud-Lott which defeated Dawson 63-48 in their bi-district game, also on Tuesday. The game will be at Jewett Leon on Friday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.

In the Lovelady game, the Indians and Lions battled it out in the first quarter 10-10, but the Indians scored a 20-2 second quarter to lead 30-12 at the half. The third quarter was close and low scoring for both teams with Lovelady taking the period 9-7. However, the Indians came back with four 2-point field goals and six free throws to lead 14-11 in the final period and secure their 19-point win, sparked largely by their big second quarter. The Indians defense held the Lions to single digits in that key second quarter and in the low-scoring third period.

Two Indians players scored in double figures. Benton Allen led with 12 on five inside field goals and a 2 of 6 trip at the free throw line. Kason Newport sank 10 points on a three-pointer and two inside baskets plus a 3 of 4 showing at the line. Caleb Ramsey and Cael Bruno each scored 9. Both had one three-pointer and three 2-point baskets. Jake Westbrook scored 8, thanks to a couple of three-pointers and a two-point goal. Isaiah Allen had 3 free throws in 5 attempts for 3 points.

The win gave the Indians a 25-7 overall record. They had finished in third place in District 19-2A with a 7-3 record, defeating first place Martins Mill 42-38 in the final district game.

Tribe’s tough defense, timely scoring

edges top-ranked Martins Mill 42-38

The Frankston Indians used a strong defense and patient and timely scoring to defeat the top-ranked Martins Mill Mustangs 42-38 before an excited home crowd at the FHS gymnasium Tuesday night, Feb. 15.

The win boosted the Indians’ District 19-2A record to 7-3 and their regular season mark to 24-7 and sent them into the Class 2A bi-district game with momentum. The Indians will play Lovelady in bi-district on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. at Fairfield.

Both teams battled it out early in the first quarter with neither being able to get their shots to fall. It was 0-0 until about half the quarter was gone and senior Cael Bruno broke the ice with a two-point goal to send the Indians on top in the period and end up outscoring the Mustangs 10-4. Another goal inside by Bruno and two 3-point goals by freshman Jake Westbrook gave the Tribe their points in the quarter.

The Indians continued their tight defense and patient scoring in the second period, as Bruno sank two more inside and Reese Hicks and Benton Allen added 2s of their own, along with a free throw apiece. Caleb Ramsey contributed a three-pointer to help outscore the Mustangs 11-3. The Tribe went into the locker room at the half with a 21-7 lead.

Martins Mill opted to put on the pressure on defense and work the ball inside for shots in the second half to try to make up the difference in the halftime score. It worked, to a degree, as they outscored the Tribe 16-7 in the third quarter. The pressure held the Indians to a couple of goals inside and three free throws. Still the Indians led by 5, at 28-23 going into the final period.

The Indians had an answer for the Mustang pressure in the final quarter, more patience and timely scoring and continued hustling defense. Bruno helped protect the Tribe lead with a three-pointer and a couple of inside baskets. Benton and Isaiah Allen each sank 2s. Caleb Ramsey dropped in two free throws and Westbrook got one at the line to give the Indians 14 points to offset the Mustangs’ 15.

The Indians, at one time, stretched their lead to 10 at 35-25 but the persistent Mustangs started eating away at that lead to come as close as 38-33 but the Tribe kept their composure and scored four more points while the Mustangs were getting 5 and with only seconds left, they preserved what would be their 4-point win.

Indians Coach Scotty Albritton reported that senior Bruno claimed the lead in points with 18, some at key points in the game. Junior Caleb Ramsey added 9, including a key 3-pointer and was 4 for 7 at the free throw line. Westbrook’s two three-pointers in that big first quarter plus a free throw gave him 7. Reese Hicks and Benton Allen each scored 3 points and Isaiah Allen, who was guarded closely all night, ended with a 2-point goal  in the fourth quarter.

Maidens fall to Centerville 45-41

in bi-district round of 2A playoffs

The Frankston Maidens lost a close one to Centerville 45-41 Monday night, Feb. 14 in a bi-district round of the Class 2A playoffs, ending a promising basketball season as the third seed from District 19-2A at 6-4 and an overall record of 23-10, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The Maidens started out strong against their Centerville opponent from District 20-2A, taking a 13-4 lead in the first quarter. However, in the second period, they could only score 6 while Centerville picked up their scoring with 10 points. The Maidens held a 19-14 lead at halftime and picked up their scoring in the third quarter, but so did Centerville which had a 14-10 performance to cut the Maidens’ lead at the end of the third to 31-28.

The fourth quarter saw the Maidens with only three 2-point goals and 4 free throws while Centerville was sinking 10 free throws plus a couple of two-point field goals and a three-pointer for a 17-10 advantage over the Maidens.

Wila Davis led Maidens scorers with two three-point goals, three 2s and 5 free throws for 17 points. Maggie Caveness got 7, three inside and a free throw. Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton and Brianna (Bri) Looney each scored 6, Hatton on three 2s and Looney on a two-pointer and 4 free throws. Kelsey Sexton scored 4 and Kaylee Davis had a free throw for 1.

Flyers in close win by 65-58

over comeback Indians team

The LaPoynor Flyers opened up a 39-22 halftime lead over the Frankston Indians, but the hustling Indians came back with a strong defense and a 36-26 second half only to fall to the talented Flyers 65-58 in a basketball thriller at the FHS gym on Friday, Feb. 11, according to a report from Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The win boosted the Flyers District 19-2A record to 8-1 and their overall record to 27-6. The Indians’ district record is now 6-3 and their season overall mark is 23-7.

The Flyers led 53-37 at the end of the third quarter, but the Indians defense held the Flyers to only 12 points in the fourth quarter while the Tribe was surging with 21. The Indians had gotten as close as 5 points with just over a minute to go and their defense was giving them repeated opportunities to score and possibly go ahead. Unfortunately for the Tribe, their shots did not fall and the Flyers went to the free throw line to preserve their 7-point win.

Freshman Jake Westbrook led Indian scorers with 16 points, thanks largely to three 3-pointers and a 3 for 3 trip to the free throw line. Kody Loebig and Benton Allen each scored 9 points. Loebig hit a three-pointer and was 3 for 3 in free throws. Allen was 3 for 8 in free throws. The Flyers held the two Tribe seniors, Isaiah Allen and Cael Bruno to 8 points each, although Allen led scorers in that fourth quarter comeback. Bruno sank a three-pointer and was 3 for 4 at the line. Caleb Ramsey also scored 8, mostly on the strength of two 3-pointers.

For the Flyers, Kase Johnston’s 6 three-point goals were largely responsible for his scoring of 31 points. He led the Flyers’ second quarter surge with 12 of those points, including two 3s. Dijuan Whitehead had 14 points inside and two free throws. Cooper Gracey scored 9 including a three-pointer and two free throws. Matt Driskell and Cort Reid each had 4. Reid was 2 for 2 at the free throw line. Evan Almeida had one three-point goal.

The Indians will host Martins Mill in their regular season finale on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 6:15 p.m. The Flyers will close out their regular season against Cayuga at LaPoynor School’s Nichols-Corley Gymnasium the same day..

Maidens win season finale 54-34

over Cross Roads, eye playoffs

The Frankston Maidens turned a big first half into a 54-34 win over Cross Roads Tuesday, Feb. 8 in their regular season finale at the FHS gymnasium and are looking ahead toward a bi-district encounter with Centerville on Feb. 14, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

It was Senior Night and Maidens seniors Tia Billingsly, Maggie Caveness, Brianna (Bri) Looney and Kelsey Sexton were honored.

The win gave the Maidens a 23-9 season record and a third place finish in District 19-2A. The Maidens play Monday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. at Fairfield HS gym vs. Centerville in bi-district, according to Coach Coker.

Earlier in the evening, the Maidens Junior varsity defeated their Cross Roads counterpart 44-22 to end their season as District 19-2A Junior Varsity champions, according to a report by JV Coach Suzanne Braley. The JV was 17-2 for the season and 7-0 in district competition.

The Maidens varsity came on the court and surged to an 18-5 lead over the Cross Roads girls in the first quarter. They padded their lead further in the second period with a 17-5 advantage and went to the locker room at halftime leading 35-10. The two teams tied at 8-8 in the third quarter and Cross Roads took the fourth quarter 16-11 but it was not nearly enough to avoid the 20-point loss.

Wila Davis led Maidens scorer with 18 points, including two three-point goals and a 4 for 5 trip to the free throw line. Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton scored 10 points on five baskets inside or near the paint. Three Maidens scored 6 points each. They were Brianna (Bri) Looney, Maggie Caveness and Kelsey Sexton. Kaylee Davis and Bandy Bizzell each scored 4, with Davis’ points coming on a three-point goal and a free throw.

Maidens JV wins District 19-2A JV Championship

The Frankston Maidens Junior Varsity ended their season as junior varsity district champions with a 44-22 win over Cross Roads Tuesday, Feb. 8.

The Maidens JV outscored Cross Roads in every quarter, starting off slow but picking up the pace as the game progressed. They won the first quarter 8-4 but then  surged for a 15-5 second period to lead 23-9 at the half. They outscored the Cross Roads girls 21-13 in the second half to secure their win.

Kaysiah Burnett led scorers with 15 points. Kaysie Nabors had 9, Zoey Walker 8, Pauline Passchier 6, Ondreia Renfro and Desi Hatton 2 each and Mariyah Hatton and Trinity Coats scored 1 each.

The Maidens JV outscored district opponents 343-143 and all season opponents 855-410, Coach Braly said. Their last loss was on Nov. 20, she said.

“I have loved every minute of coaching these girls,” the coach said. “They were so much fun to coach.”

The win over Cross Roads ended their season. Junior varsity teams do not advance into playoffs.

Indians dominate Cross Roads 81-26

in District 19-2A seeding prelude test

The Frankston Indians held Cross Roads to only single digits in three quarters Tuesday, Feb. 8 in a convincing 81-26 District 19-2A win at Senior Night in the FHS gymnasium, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

Seniors Cael Bruno, Isaiah Allen and Alex Oxford were honored.

The victory increased the Indians’ season record to 23-6 and their district mark to 6-2, currently at least third seeded behind Martins Mill and LaPoynor, two teams they will face in successive games on Feb. 11 and Feb. 15 at the FHS gym. They lost to each team in games in the first round of district play and have hopes of improving their seeding in the Class 2A playoffs with wins.

The Indians started strong in the game against Cross Roads. They led 19-5 in the first quarter and 29-5 in the second to surge out to a commanding 48-10 lead at the half. They continued their proficient scoring in the third quarter and their strong defense to increase their lead to 61-14. Indians shooters were on target again in the fourth with a 20-12 performance to put the lid on their 55-point win. The team made 33 of those points on three-point field goals.

Senior Isaiah Allen (4) celebrated Senior Night with a season high 30 points to lead scorers. He sank five three-pointers and seven from inside or near the free throw circle and made 1 of 2 free throw tries. He was big in the second quarter with 12 of the 29 Tribe points in that period. Another senior, Cael Bruno (22), who missed much of the season recovering from a football injury, found the scoring range with 20 points. He hit only one three-point goal but was prolific on the inside with 7 field goals. He also was 3 for 4 at the free throw line. Junior point guard Caleb Ramsey (12) rounded out the Tribe double-figure scoring with 16. He sank three 3-pointers and scored three closer to the basket and was 1 for 1 in free throws. 6’0” freshman Jake Westbrook (23) scored 8 points, including a three-pointer and a free throw. Junior Kason Newport (10) scored 5, including a three-point goal and freshman Reese Hicks scored a 2 early in the game.

Maidens clinch 2A third seed

spot in win over Cayuga five

The Frankston Maidens clinched a third seed in the Class 2A playoffs Monday, Feb. 7 with a 43-24 win over the Cayuga Lady Wildcats in a game rescheduled from Friday, Feb. 4 due to inclement winter weather, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The Maidens are now 22-9 for the season and 5-4 in district competition, losing only to Martins Mill and LaPoynor twice, likely first and second seeds in the playoffs.

Earlier in the evening, the Maiden Junior Varsity remained undefeated in district play with a 56-16 victory over their Cayuga counterparts, Maidens JV Coach Suzanne Braly reported. The Maidens JV is now 16-2 overall and 6-0 in district competition.

The Maidens varsity jumped out to a 13-5 lead over the Lady Wildcats in the first quarter and 12-8 in the second period to lead 25-13 at halftime. The two teams tied at 9-9 in the third quarter but the Maidens took a 9-2 advantage in the fourth to secure their 19-point win.

Leading scorer for the Maidens was Maggie Caveness with 12 points. She was 6 of 8 at the free throw line. Wila Davis was second with 10 points, including a three-point goal and three free throws in five trips to the line. Brianna (Bri) Looney scored 9, including a 3-pointer. Mya Mitchell scored 6 and was perfect at 2 of 2 in free throws. Bandy Bizzell scored 3 with a 2-point field goal and a 1of 2 evening in free throws. Kaylee Davis scored 2 and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton had a free throw for 1.

Maidens JV wins over Cayuga 56-16

The Maidens JV dominated the first quarter 14-0 and were 16-7 in the second to lead 30-7 at the half. In the second half they outscored the Lady Wildcats JV 26-9 to win by 40 points.

Ten Frankston players scored in the game, two in double figures. Pauline Passchier led scorers with 13 points, including a three-point goal and a 2 of 2 free throw performance. Kaysiah Burnett scored 11, mostly at or near the paint. Mariyah Hatton had 7, including a three-pointer. Trinity Coats had 6 and Kaysie Nabors and Kennedi Musselman each scored 5. Musselman had a three-point goal. Desi Hatton had 3 on three free throws out of four tries. Ondreia Renfro, Zoey Walker and Caitlyn Deupree each scored 2.

The Maidens will close out their regular season Tuesday, Feb. 8 hosting Cross Roads with JV action starting at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Maidens and Indians varsities games. It will be Senior Night for the Frankston teams.

Indians clinch at least third

seed, top Cayuga by 50-44

Four Frankston Indians scored in double figures Monday, Feb. 7 as the Tribe defeated Cayuga 50-44 to clinch at least third seed in the Class 2A playoffs, according to a report from Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The game had been rescheduled from Friday, Feb. 4 due to inclement winter weather.

The Indians are now 5-2 in District 19-2A competition and 22-6 for the regular season.

The victory was secured in the second half against Cayuga. After taking an early 14–10 lead, the Indians were outscored 16-8 in the second quarter to trail 26-22 at halftime. However, the Tribe came back in the second half to outscore the Wildcats 12-8 in the third quarter to tie 34-34. The Indians secured their victory with a 16-10 performance in the fourth quarter.

Isaiah Allen led Indians scorers with 14 points, including three 3-point goals and a 3 of 5 performance at the free throw line. Two players scored 13 points. Benton Allen earned his 13 with 5 baskets in or near the paint and a 3 of 5 free throw mark. Caleb Ramsey got 13 on three 3-pointers and was 2 for 3 at the free throw line. Jake Westbrook scored 10, mostly on the strength of two three-point goals.

The Indians were to host Cross Roads Tuesday, Feb. 8 on Senior Night. Junior varsity action is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. followed by games by the Maidens and Indians varsities.

Maidens score 30 points in first

period in win over Kerens Feb. 1

The Frankston Maidens turned a 30-2 first quarter into a 42-2 halftime lead and then went on to defeat Kerens 68-22 in a District 19-2A basketball game at the FHS gym on Tuesday, Feb. 1, according to a report by Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The win gave the Maidens a 21-9 season record and a 4-4 district mark.

Every Maidens player scored in the contest and Wila Davis and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton accounted for 22 of the 30 points in that impressive first quarter. The Maidens put the lid on their win in the final quarter with a 17-4 performance.

Leading scorer for the Maidens was Wila Davis with 17 points, including a three-point goal and a 2 for 5 performance at the free throw line. Hatton followed with 12 points, including 2 for 2 free throws. Bandy Bizzell had 9, Pauline Passchier 8, Maggie Caveness 6, Kaylee Davis and Mya Mitchell 5 each and Brianna (Bri) Looney 4. Lynsie Bizzell had 2.

Four Indians in double digits

in 77-26 victory over Kerens

Four Frankston Indians players scored in double figures as the Tribe dominated Kerens 77-26 and increased their record in District 19-2A to 4-2 on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at the FHS gym, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians are now 21-6 overall for the season.

The Tribe led by only 12-8 in the first quarter, but their scoring surged in the second period as they sank 21 points to 10 for the Bobcats. The Tribe led 33-18 at halftime. In the second half the Indians had a good third quarter with an 18-6 advantage but they overwhelmed Kerens in the final period 26-2 to secure their big win.

The Indians hit eight three-point goals and went to the free throw line 19 times for 7 points. Their defense helped them score 23 two-point field goals.

Leading scorer for the Indians was Cael Bruno with 18 points, including two 3-pointers. Isaiah Allen was close behind with 15, also with two three-point goals. Caleb Ramsey also was close with 14 and was 2 for 5 at the free throw line. Kason Newport had 12 baskets, aided by two 3s. Kody Loebig had 8 and was 2 for 3 in free throws. Also with 8 was Jake Westbrook whose two 3-point field goals accounted for most of his points. Reese Hicks added a field goal for 2 points.

Indians miss late chance win,

fall to Martins Mill by 45-42

The Frankston Indians had a chance to win over top-rated Martins Mill on the road Friday, Jan. 28, with less than a minute to go, before the Mustangs sank two free throws to save a 45-42 win, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians were behind by 11 points midway in the fourth quarter, but scored 10 unanswered points to shrink the Mustangs’ lead to a single point, 43-42 with less than a minute to go. Unfortunately for the Indians, they were unable to score the basket needed to win and were forced to foul as the seconds ticked away.

The comeback started when Cael Bruno scored a two-point basket, followed by a 2-pointer by Caleb Ramsey to narrow the score to 43-36. Then Kody Loebig unloaded for two straight three-point goals to put the Indians within one point of Martins Mill and set up that fateful opportunity in the last seconds.

The Indians had played tough defense and stayed within striking distance for much of the game. Martins Mill led by 5 in the first quarter 13-8, but the Indians came back to narrow the Mustangs’ lead to 23-19 at halftime. The third quarter was close as Martins Mill had a 12-11 edge but the Indians were still down by 35-30 going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Indians held Martins Mill to two 3-pointers and a couple of free throws before the Mustangs sank the two free throws which cinched the team’s win.

Cael Bruno led Indians scorers with 12 points. Caleb Ramsey and Kody Loebig each had 9. Isaiah Allen scored 7, Kason Newport 3 and Benton Allen had 2. Loebig had three 3-pointers,  and Isaiah Allen, Newport and Ramsey had one each. Isaiah Allen and Ramsey were both 2 for 2 at the free throw line.

Indians Coach Albritton said he is “super proud” of the Indians team.

“Our players played with a lot of heart,” the coach said. “They showed that they have the guts, intensity, and mental toughness to play with anyone in 2A.”

Coach Albritton said the team went through a bunch of adversity during the game, including an injury early in the game to being in foul trouble.

“The guys just continued to battle for 32 minutes,” the Indians coach said.  

The loss gives the Indians a 20-6 season record and a 3-2 district mark.

Martins Mill girls shoot well

in win over Maidens Jan. 28

The Martins Mill Lady Mustangs were accurate from the field and hit 13 of 14 at  the free throw line Friday, Jan. 28 on their home court while the Frankston Maidens varsity had a low-scoring night to fall 76-27 to the District 19-2A leader, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

Earlier in the day, the Maidens Junior Varsity took a 44-23 win over the Martins Mill JV. That boosted their record to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in district play.

The Maidens varsity could get only 5 points in the first quarter while Martins Mill was scoring 18 on seven 2-point field goals and were 4 for 4 at the free throw line. Thanks partly to two 3-pointers by Wila Davis, the Maidens picked up their scoring in the second quarter to sink 10 points to the Lady Mustangs’ 17, including five 2-pointers and another 4 for 4 in free throws.

The Martins Mill girls were still shooting well in the second half. In the third quarter, they scored 20 points, including four 3-pointers and another 4 for 4 free throw performance. The Maidens could score only 3 points. In the fourth quarter, the Maidens scored 9 points, including another 3-pointer by Wila Davis. However, the Lady Mustangs padded their score with 22 points, including five 3-pointers.

Scoring in the game for the Maidens were Wila Davis with 9, Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton with 6, Maggie Caveness with 5, Kaylee Davis and Mya Mitchell with 3 each and Brianna (Bri) Looney with 1.

Lady Flyers win over Maidens;

Frankston JV wins on Jan. 25

The LaPoynor Lady Flyers varsity improved their district record to 5-1 Tuesday, Jan. 25 with a 67-44 victory over the Frankston Maidens, now 3-3 in district play, according to reports from coaches for both teams.

In the junior varsity game, the Maidens JV won over the Lady Flyer JV 32-12, boosting their season record to 14-2 and the district mark to 4-0.

The Lady Flyers took an early 16-8 lead but the Maidens came back in the second quarter to outscore the LaPoynor girls 17-12 to narrow the Lady Flyer lead to 28-25. In the third quarter the Lady Flyers extended their lead to 44-33 with a 16-8 performance over the Maidens. Flyers scorers secured the win with a 23-11 fourth quarter. The Lady Flyers hit 92 percent of their free throws, sinking 23 of 25.

Three Flyers players scored in double figures in the game. Markayla Hurd led with 18 points, followed by Payton Maze’s 15 points and Kitty Eldridge’s 12. Natalie Tobin and Tmia Mitchell each had 9 and Bre Howard had 4. Hurd, Maze, Mitchell and Tobin each had three-point field goals. At the free throw line, Howard was 2 for 2, Eldridge 4 for 4, Hurd 5 for 5, Maze 6 of 8, Mitchell 2 for 2 and Tobin 4 of 4.

Two Maidens were in double figures. Wila Davis had 15 and Maggie Caveness 14. Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton had 9,  and Brianna (Bri) Looney, Kaylee Davis and Bandy Bizzell 2 each. Wila Davis had three 3-point goals. She was 2 for 2 at the free throw line. Hatton was 3 for 4 in free throws and Caveness was 2 for 4.

According to Lady Flyers Coach Jammie Maze, other statistics were:

For the Lady Flyers, Payton Maze had 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 deflections. Eldridge had 5 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 2 deflections. Mitchell had 2 rebounds, a steal and a deflection. Hurd had a rebound, 6 assists, 5 steals and 2 deflections.

For the Maidens, Caveness had 15 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals. Hatton had 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and a deflection. Wila Davis had 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Looney had 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and a deflection. Kaylee Davis had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Bizzell had 2 rebounds and an assist.

Maidens JV defeats Lady Flyers JV 32-12

Maidens JV Coach Suzanne Braly reported that her team started out slow but picked up the pace  and “played much better in the second half” in their victory.

The Frankston girls had a 6-2 lead in the first quarter and led 11-7 at halftime. In the third quarter they had an 8-1 edge and they scored in double figures in the final quarter 13-4 to secure the win.

Leading scorer for the Maidens JV was Kaysiah Burnett with 12 points, nine in the final quarter. Kaysie Nabors, Desi Hatton and Pauline Passchier had 4, Zoey Walker 3, and Aryonna Hatton and Trinity Coats 2 each. Mariyah Hatton had 1.

The Maidens go to Martins Mill on Friday, Jan. 28 with JV action starting at 4:30 p.m. followed by varsity actions by the Maidens and the Indians.

The Lady Flyers will be at Cayuga the same day with JV action scheduled at 4:30 followed by varsity games by the Lady Flyers and Flyers varsities following.

Indians top Cross Roads 79-24

as defense, offense dominates

The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team defense held Cross Roads to single digits in every quarter while the Indian offense was sinking 15 three-point field goals to spark a 79-24 victory Friday night, Jan. 21, according to a report by Indian Coach Scotty Albritton. 

The win boosted the Indians’ District 19-2A record to 3-0 and their season record to 20-4.

The Indians came on the court at Cross Roads and immediately scored a 26-6 lead in the first quarter. By halftime they had turned an 18-8 second quarter performance into a 44-11 halftime lead. Their second half was almost as impressive as they outscored Cross Roads 15-8 in the third and 20-5 in the fourth to amass their winning 55-point margin.

Three Indians scored in double figures but Kody Loebig recorded a season high 30 points, mostly on the strength of eight 3-pointers, six in the first half. Jake Westbrook scored 15 points, including three 3-point goals in the second half. Cael Bruno had 14 points, including a 3-point goal. Benton Allen helped with 8 points, three of which came on a three-point basket. Kason Newport’s 6 points came on two 3s. Caleb Ramsey score 4 and was 2 for 2 at the free throw line. Reese Hicks added 2 points for the Tribe.

Next up for the Indians will be at LaPoynor on Tuesday, Jan. 25. Junior varsity action starts at 4:30 and the schedule includes the Maidens’ varsity game. The Indians are scheduled to play at 7:15 p.m.

Maidens improve 19-2A record

with 64-41 win at Cross Roads

The Frankston Maidens outscored Cross Roads in every quarter Friday, Jan. 21 to take a District 19-2A victory 64-41 at Cross Roads, according to a report by Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The win gave the Maidens a 3-2 record in district play and a 20-7 season mark.

Earlier in the evening the Maidens Junior Varsity continued their winning ways with a decisive 51-16 victory over their Cross Roads counterparts. The Maidens JV record is 13-2 overall and 3-0 in district competition.

Led by the scoring of Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton, the Maidens moved out to an 18-11 first quarter lead and then edged Cross Roads 17-15 in the second period to take a 35-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, the Maidens’ pressure defense held their opponents to only 15 more points while scoring 29 themselves to register their winning margin.

Hatton shared the scoring lead in the game with Wila Davis, both with 15 points. Davis sank a three-point goal early in the game and was 2 for 2 at the charity stripe to help the Maiden cause. Two other Maidens, Kaylee Davis and Maggie Caveness shared second place with 11 points each. Kaylee was 3 for 4 and Maggie sank 5 of 10 free throws. Mya Mitchell and Bandy Bizzell each scored 5 and both were 1 for 2 in free throw tries. Brianna (Bri) Looney combined her defensive play with a 2-point field goal in the fourth quarter.

Maidens JV continues to win

Coach Suzanne Braly’s Maidens JV had a big night also. They continued their winning streak with a stingy defense in every quarter. Their scoring prowess started after the opening tip as they took a 13-2 lead into the second quarter. There they continued to excel with a 13-7 performance to lead 26-9 at halftime. Cross Roads did not score a point in the third quarter while the Maidens JV sank 11 points. From there the FHS girls JV put the final touch on their win with a 14-7 lead in the final period.

Multiple Frankston JV girls contributed points for the win, but Pauline Passchier scored 14 and Kaysiah Burnett had 10 to lead the pack. Three players scorer 6 points. They were Trinity Coats, Kaysie Nabors and Desi Hatton. Nabors was 2 for 3 at the free throw line. Aryonna Hatton had 5 and Mariyah Hatton and Kennedi Musselman each had 2 points. Many of the  team’s two-point goals were the results of their pressure defense.

The Frankston varsity and JV will be going to LaPoynor on Tuesday, Jan. 25 with the JV seeking a repeat win and the varsity hoping to even things up with a victory over a LaaPoynor team which had won their first round meeting. JV action is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game at about 6 p.m., followed by the boys contest.

Indians score convincing 65-25

The Frankston Indians increased their District 19-2A record to 2-0 and their season mark to 19-4 Wednesday, Jan. 19 with a convincing 65-25 victory over the Kerens Bobcats on the road, according to Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The game had been scheduled for Friday, Jan. 14 but was postponed.

The Indians jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and led 30-19 at halftime. In the second half they scored 35 points while the Tribe defense held Kerens to only 6 points. As a team, the Indians had seven three-point field goals.

Leading scorer was Cael Bruno with 16 points, including two three-point goals. Jake Westbrook, with three 3-pointers, and Caleb Ramsey, with one, both scored 14 points. Kody Loebig had 9 points, including a 3-pointer. Benton Allen and Kason Newport each scored 6 points. The Indians were 2 for 3 at the free throw line.

The Indians will be going to Cross Roads on Friday, Jan 21 for another 19-2A contest with junior varsity action scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The Frankston Maidens defense held the Kerens Lady Bobcats to single digits in every quarter and scored prolifically themselves as they came home with a 61-20 victory on Wednesday, Jan. 19, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The game had been scheduled on Friday, Jan. 14 but was postponed.

The victory for the Maidens gave them a 2-2 District 19-2A record and made them 19-7 overall.

Maiden scorers found the range for their shots in the first quarter, outscoring the Lady Bobcats 20-8. They had an 11-4 advantage in the second period to lead 31-12 at the half. The Maidens continued their scoring in the second half with a 10-3 third and secured their big win with a 20-5 fourth quarter.

Three Maidens players scored in double figures in the game. Leading scorer was Ja’Shaylyn (Shay) Hatton with 15 points. Mya Mitchell had 14 and Maggie Caveness 11. Brianna (Bri) Looney scored 8, Brandy Bizzell 6, Kaylee Davis 3, Pauline Passchier 2 and Wila Davis and Mariyah Hatton had 1 each. Kaylee Davis and Caveness both hit 3 of 4 free throws.

The Maidens will be going to Cross Roads on Friday, Jan. 21 with action starting at 4:30 p.m.

Indians win over Cayuga 42-33

Jan. 18 for first district victory

The Frankston Indians are 1-0 in District 19-2A after winning over Cayuga  42-33 Tuesday, Jan. 18 at the FHS gym and are going to Kerens Wednesday, Jan. 19 for a makeup game from one postponed on Jan. 14, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indian defense continued to be tough in the contest, holding Cayuga to single digits in three of the four quarters. Offensively they outscored the Wildcats 16-8 in the first quarter and 11-7 in the second to lead 27-15 at halftime. Things were closer in the second half as the Indians scored 15 points to Cayuga’s 18, but their first half 12-point lead held up for a 9-point victory.

Leading scorer for the Indians was Jake Westbrook who sank four three-pointers for 12 points. Benton Allen had 9 and was 3 for 9 at the free throw line. Cael Bruno got 8 points, including two 3-pointers. Kody Loebig scored 6. Kason Newport had 4, including a 2 for 2 free throw performance. Reese Hicks had 2 and Caleb Ramsey 1 point.

The win gave the Indians an 18-4 season record to go with their 1-0 district mark.

On Wednesday, Jan. 19, the Indians were to journey to a second district game at Kerens at about 6:15 p.m., following the Maidens game. No junior varsity games were scheduled. On Friday, Jan. 21 the Indians will be at Cross Roads, resuming the regular schedule.

Maidens defeat Cayuga five

46-25, go to Kerens Jan. 19

The Frankston Maidens varsity Tuesday, Jan. 18 defeated the Cayuga Lady Wildcats 46-25 at the FHS gym as a prelude to a makeup game with the Kerens Lady Bobcats Wednesday, Jan. 19 at Kerens, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The Maidens’ defense held Cayuga to single digits in each quarter, forcing the Lady Wildcats to shoot from outside most of the evening. Meanwhile the offense was taking a 13-8 lead in the first quarter and a 28-13 halftime score. In the second half, the Maidens were held without a field goal in the third quarter but hit 5 of 6 from the free throw line while Cayuga was getting a couple of 2-point field goals and sinking 3 of 4 free throw tries. However, in the fourth quarter, the Maidens outscored Cayuga 13-5, thanks largely to three 2-point field goals and a three-point basket by Mila Davis, her second of the night.

Mila Davis led Maidens’ scoring with 14 points, going 4 for 4 at the free throw line plus the two 3-pointers while making two 2-point shots. Maggie Caveness sank four inside and was 2 for 4 in free throws for 10 points. Brianna (Bri) Looney scored 8, going 4 for 6 at the charity stripe. Bandy Bizzell hit for 6, including a 4 for 4 performance on free throws. Lynsie Bizzell and Kaylee Davis each had 3 points and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton had a single 2-point field goal.

The Maidens are now 1-2 in district play..

The Maidens will be at Kerens on Wednesday, Jan. 19 for a district game postponed from Jan. 14. They play at 5 p.m. followed by the Indians makeup game with Kerens at about 6:15. On Friday, Jan. 21 the regular schedule resumes at Cross Roads.

Indians defeat Carlisle 48-17

to close out non-district play

The Frankston Indians closed out non-district play Tuesday, Jan. 11 with a 48-17 win over Carlisle on the road at Price, according to Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The win increased the Indians season record to 17-2 and team members honored Coach Albritton on his 300th career win as a head coach.

The Indians defense held Carlisle to single digits in every quarter but the Frankston tribe got off to a slow start on offense, scoring only a 7-4 margin in the first quarter. The Indians picked up their scoring in the second period with a 12-5 advantage to lead at halftime 19-9.

In the second half the Indians outscored Carlisle with 29 points, 19-6 in the third quarter and 10-2 in the final period to secure the victory.

Scoring leader for the Frankston Indians was Isaiah Allen with 15 points, including a three-point goal. Jake Westbrook also scored in double figures with 10, also with a three-pointer. Maidens varsity falls in 19-2A

game with Martins Mill Jan. 11

The Martins Mill Lady Mustangs used 16 three-point goals for a total of 48 points to score a 76-40 victory over the Frankston Maidens Tuesday, Jan. 11 at the FHS gym, according to a report by Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

Meanwhile the Maidens played a strong defense in the first half to trail by only nine points at halftime. They trailed 21-12 in the first quarter, thanks largely to five three-point goals or 15 of the 21 points. The Maidens answered by sinking 5 of 6 free throws, almost half the points they got in the quarter. The two teams each got 14 points in the second period, Martins Mill with six of their points on three-pointers.

The Lady Mustangs came out of the dressing room after halftime and held the Maidens to single digits in the third and fourth periods while scoring 41 points themselves. They hit 9 three-point goals for 27 of those points. The Maidens had six 2-point field goals and were 2 for 4 at the free throw line in the second half.

Scoring for the Maidens were Ja’Shalyn Hatton with 11, Wila Davis 10, Bandy Bizzell 5, Kaylee Davis 4, Maggie Caveness and Mya Mitchell 3 each and Brianna (Bri) Looney and Lynsie Bizzell with 2 each. The Maidens scored 12 of their points at the free throw line. Wila Davis was 3 for 3, Kaylee Davis 2 for 2, Bandy Bizzell 3 for 4 and Hatton 2 for 4 at the charity stripe. Mitchell and Caveness each had one free throw.

Maidens JV 64, Martins Mill JV 17

The Maidens Junior Varsity dominated play over the Martins Mill JV 64-17, holding their counterparts to single digits in every quarter to boost their season record to 13-2 and their district mark to 2-0.

The Maidens JV led Martins Mill 22-4 at the end of the first quarter and 13-8 in the second to have a 35-12 lead at halftime. In the third quarter they outscored their counterparts by 13-1 and by 16-4 in the final period for their convincing win.

Coach Suzanne Braly said Trinity Coats led Maidens JV scorers with 12 points. Kaysiah Burnett had 11 and Kaysie Nabors 10. Mariyah Hatton scored 9, including a three-point goal. Desi Hatton had 8 and Pauline Passchier 7. Kennedi Musselman got a three-pointer and Zoey Walker and Aryonna Hatton each had 2.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Maidens varsity will host Cayuga at 6 p.m. followed by the Indians varsity game with Cayuga at 7:15 p.m. There will be no junior varsity games.

The Maidens varsity will go to Kerens  on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Games on Friday, Jan. 14 were postponed. No JV games will be played on the new date. The Maidens varsity game is set for 5 p.m. followed at about 6:15 by the Indians varsity contest.

Indians fourth period comeback

tops formidable Mineola 39-35 

The Frankston Indians played strong defense and overcame a slow early start on offense to come back in the final quarter to defeat formidable Mineola 39-35 in a non-district varsity contest at the FHS gym Friday, Jan. 7, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

“We came back from 13 down in the first half,” Coach Albritton said.

The victory for the Tribe boosted their season record to 16-4 with one more non-district contest to go before entering District 19-2A play. Indians coach Albritton recorded his 299th career win as a head coach.

The Mineola team presented the Indians with a challenge early leading by 3 after a three pointer. The Tribe opponent was to score 11 more points, mostly 3-pointers, in the period and the Indians were held to 5. The second quarter was close but the Tribe sank 8 points and held Mineola to 6. At halftime Mineola led 20-13.

The third quarter proved equally tight as the Indians picked up a point by taking an 8-7 advantage, making the Mineola lead 27-21.

Frankston began hitting their shots more and continued their strong defense in the fourth quarter with a 18-8 advantage. Five Indian players, led by Cael Bruno’s 5, scored and contributions by Isaiah Allen, Caleb Ramsey. Jake Westbrook and Kody Loebig helped for enough points to secure the four-point victory.

Scoring for the Indians were Isaiah Allen with 11, Westbrook with 8, Ramsey with 6, Benton Allen and Bruno with 5 each and Loebig and Reese Hicks with 2 each. Westbrook had two 3s and Isaiah Allen and Bruno had one each. Ramsey was 2 for 2 at the free throw line.

Maidens fall to LaPoynor 49-35

in District 19-2A opener Jan. 7

The Frankston Maidens kept the LaPoynor Lady Flyers in single digits in the first two quarters in the District 19-2A opener trailing by just 16-13 at halftime, but the Lady Flyers came back strong in the second half to take a 49-35 victory on the Maidens home court Friday, Jan. 7, according to reports from both Coaches Christi Coker and Jammie Maze.

Neither team could sink their shots in the first half, thanks partly to defensive play. The Lady Flyers did manage a 5-0 lead early before the Maidens could get their offense going. By the end of the first quarter, the Maidens trailed by 9-4. They made it close in the second quarter with a 9-7 advantage. 

LaPoynor found the basket more in the third quarter, edging the Maidens 14-9 even though the Maidens had tied the score at 22 with 3:48 left in the third. However, LaPoynor was able to go into the fourth period with a 30-22 lead. 

The Lady Flyers secured their win by outscoring the Maidens 19-13 and increasing their lead in the final minutes of the game.

Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton led Maidens scorers with 12 and Wila Davis had 10, including a three-pointer. Hatton and Davis kept Maidens’ hopes alive by scoring most of the points in the final quarter. Brianna (Bri) Looney scored 5, including a 3-pointer. Maggie Caveness had 4 and Lynsie Bizzell and Bandy Bizzell each had 2 points.

Maggie Caveness had 11 rebounds and a steal. Hatton had 10 rebounds, an assist, a steal and 3 deflections. Looney had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 5 deflections.

Markayla Hurd led LaPoynor scorers with 17 points, including a 3-pointer and was 8 for 9 at the free throw line. Payton Maze had 11 points and was 5 of 7 in free throws. Kitty Eldridge had 7 points, Tmia Mitchell 6, Natalie Tobin and Riley Thaw with a 3-pointer each and Bre Howard with 2.

Hurd had 10 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a deflection. Tobin had 6 rebounds, an assist, a block, 3 steals and 3 deflections. Mitchell had rebound, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 7 steals and a deflection. Maze had. 5 rebounds, an assist, a block, 6 steals and a deflection. Eldridge had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Maidens JV 52, Lady Flyers JV 37

In junior varsity action earlier, the Maidens JV came back strong in the second half to secure a 52-37 victory over the Lady Flyer JV. They trailed 18-11 in the first quarter and 25-19 at the half but had a big second half, outscoring their LaPoynor counterparts 33-12 in the second half to gain a 15-point victory. The Maidens JV is now 12-2 for the season and 1-0 in district play, according to Coach Suzanne Braly.

Leading scoring for the Maidens JV were Kaysiah Burnett and Kassie Nabors with 16 points each. Trinity Coats had 8, Mariyah Hatton 6, and Zoey Walker, Desi Hatton and Pauline Passchier with 2 each. Mariyah Hatton was 2 for 3, Nabors 2 for 5 and Burnett 2 for 6 at the free throw line.

Maidens Junior Varsity enjoys 11-2 

winning record in pre-district action

The Frankston Maidens Junior Varsity basketball team, playing in the shadow of a successful varsity team, have compiled a successful year of their own as they enter into the District 19-2A competition.

“These girls have come a long way and are playing very good defense, which has translated into lots of layups,” Coach Suzanne Braly said of her team.

Coach Braly points out that the Maidens JV  is now 11-2 in pre-district play and has outscored their opponents 512-267, “the majority of that off of turnovers caused by pressure defense”.

The coach listed her players: Mariyah Hatton (3), Zoey Walker (10), Aryanna Hatton (11), Trinity Coats (12), Kaysiah Burnett (13), Kassie Nabors (20), Addi Loebig (21), Ondreia Renfro (22), Desi Hatton (23), Kaitlyn Deupree (25), Kennedi Musselman (30) and Pauline Passchier (40).

According to a summary by the coach, the only losses this team has had in pre-district play were early in the season at the Malakoff Tournament when they  finished in fifth place after falling to Malakoff 37-17 and to Mineola by the narrow margin of 28-26 after winning the first round game against Covington 47-11.

After winning over Cushing 49-3 on Nov. 1 and defeating Covington in the tournament on Nov. 18, from Nov. 22 on, the JV Maidens have defeated every team they played. They defeated Jacksonville 25-22, Elkhart 62-21 and Troup 41-9, before finishing in first place in the LaPoynor JV Tournament Dec. 2-4. There they won over West Rusk 60-9, Bullard 41-29,  and Troup 35-16.

Then on Dec. 7, they defeated Rusk 29-22, followed on Dec. 17 by a 38-29 victory over Whitehouse and finally on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, they won over Slocum 42-31.

Now, on Friday, Jan. 7, they will play the LaPoynor Junior Varsity followed on Jan. 11 by Martins Mill, both on the FHS court at 4:30 p.m., trying to extend their success into the tough District 19-2A schedule and they’ll be cheering on their successful sister Maidens varsity in the games to follow theirs on those dates.

Indians continue hitting baskets

defeating Overton 80-31 Jan. 4

The Frankston Indians increased their season record to 15-4 with a convincing 80-31 victory over the Overton Mustangs in a non-district basketball game Tuesday, Jan. 4 at the FHS gym, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians had another good night offensively while continuing to mount a strong defense. For another game, the Indians connected on 12 three-point goals. Defensively, they held the Mustangs to single digits in three of the four quarters.

The Tribe came out on the court in the first quarter and outscored Overton 24-7 and followed with a 17-7 second quarter showing, to lead 41-14 at halftime. In the second half, the Indians continued to score prolifically with a 15-10 third quarter and capped the victory with another 24-7 performance in the final period.

Four Indians scored in double figures in the game. Cael Bruno led with 16 points including a 3-pointer and a 1 for 1 visit at the free throw line. Two others, Kason Newport and Kody Loebig each had 14 points, each with four 3-pointers. Benton Allen had 13 points with five 2-point field goals and 3 free throws in 4 trips to the line. Caleb Ramsey scored 9 points, including a three-pointer and Isaiah Allen and Jake Westbrook each had 7, both including a three-point goal.

Indians play tough offense, defense

downing Slocum 61-25 on Dec. 31

The Frankston Indians “played a complete game” Friday, Dec. 31 as they dominated Slocum 61-25 before a home crowd at the FHS gym, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians put both sides of the game together as they netted 18 points in the first quarter while holding Slocum scoreless. After a 13-7 second quarter, they led their non-district opponents 31-7 at the half. The Indian offense and defense were equally impressive in the third quarter as they scored 15 and held Slocum to 5, going into the final period with a 46-12 lead. Slocum picked up their scoring in the final period but Frankston continued to sink their shots for a 15-13 edge, putting the lid on their victory.

Coach Albritton had glowing words for his team after the contest.

“We played a complete game today,” the Tribe coach said. “The defense was outstanding and we shot the ball well.” 

He noted that the Indians made 12 three-point goals.

“The guys played with a ton of energy on both ends of the floor for all four quarters,” Coach Albritton said.

Three Indians players scored in double figures, sinking a total of 9 three-point goals, which made up most of their points. Caleb Ramsey led with 12 points on four 3-pointers. Jake Westbrook had 11, including three 3-pointers. Cael Bruno had 10 points, including two from outside for 3 points each. Adding to the scoring were Kason Newport and Isaiah Allen, each with 8, Newport with two 3-pointers and Allen with one. Kody Loebig had 7 points and Benton Allen 5.

The Indians,  now 14-4 so far, have three more non-district games before they begin the first round of District 19-2A competition.

They start the new calendar year on Tuesday, Jan. 4 hosting Overton with junior varsity action starting at 5 p.m. Then on Friday, Jan. 7 they play another home slate against Mineola, JV play starting at 7:15 p.m. They close out non-district on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Price against Carlisle. JV game starts at 5 p.m.

The Indians open district play at Kerens on Friday, Jan. 14.

Maidens celebrate New Year’s Eve

with 47-28 victory over Slocum five

The Frankston Maidens closed out their non-district basketball schedule on New Year’s Eve, 2021 with a 47-28 victory over Slocum at the FHS gym, according to a report from Coach Christi Coker.

The Maidens went into the game after an impressive first place finish at the Glen Evans Classic at Troup, winning all four games on the schedule.

The win Friday, Dec. 31 boosted the Maidens record going into District 19-2A play to 14-4.

The Maidens held Slocum to single digits in all but one quarter. They jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first quarter and 28-12 at halftime. Frankston tied Slocum 9-9 in the third quarter to maintain their lead 37-21 but then outscored their opponents 10-7 to increase their winning margin.

Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton led Maidens scorers with 12 points with five 2-point field goals and a 2 for 3 performance at the free throw line. Bandy Bizzell had 10 points, all 2-pointers. Wila Davis had only one field goal but was 5 for 5 at the charity stripe for 7 points. Brianna (Bri) Looney had 6 points, all 2-point field goals. Kaylee Davis had 5, including a free throw and Maggie Caveness was 3 for 4 at the free throw line for 3 points. Mya Mitchell and Kelsey Sexton had 2 each on single field goals.

The Maidens will begin District 19-2A competition Friday, Jan. 7 against the always competitive LaPoynor Lady Flyers at the FHS gym. Junior varsity action starts at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity contest.

Maidens win first place in Troup

Glen Evans Classic on Dec. 28-29

The Frankston Maidens won first place in the Glen Evans Classic at Troup on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 28-29 by sweeping all four opponents, the final one being Winona 58-13 Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 29, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

In the earlier games, the Maidens defeated Troup 44-25 and then won over Laneville 75-8 in action on Tuesday, Dec. 28. Then on Wednesday, Dec 29, they defeated Kennard 77-11 before the final win over Winona to earn first place.

Not only that but individual Maidens were honored as superlatives in the basketball event.

Wila Davis (30) earned the Most Valuable Player award. Brianna (Bri) Looney (00) was selected the Most Valuable player on defense. Two other Maidens were named All-Tournament. They are Maggie Caveness (12) and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton.

In the game Wednesday afternoon against Winona, the Maidens outscored Winona 23-10 in the first quarter and led 45-11 at halftime.

Leading scorer for the Maidens against Winona was Wila Davis with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Bandy Bizzell had 13 and was 3 for 5 at the free throw line. Looney scored 12, including 2 free throws in two trips to the line. Hatton and Kaylee Davis each scored 5 including a free throw each. Caveness was perfect at the free throw line scoring 4. Mya Mitchell scored 2.

Against Kennard, the Maidens dominated throughout the game, their defense holding the Kennard girls to only six points in the first half and five in the second. Meanwhile they were scoring 39 points in the first half and 38 in the second.

Leading scorer for the Maidens was Bandy Bizzell with 15 points, seven two-point goals and a free throw.  Looney scored 12 points and went 2 for 2 at the free throw line. Pauline Passchier had 10 points, including two 3-pointers. Caveness and Hatton each had 9 and both went 3 for 6 at the charity stripe. Lynsie Bizzell and Kaylee Davis had 8 each, Mitchell 4 and Wila Davis scored 2.

In the Laneville game Tuesday afternoon, the Maidens dominated play throughout, with every Maidens player scoring points. They won the first quarter 18-1 and the second 23-4 to lead 41-5 at halftime. They padded their lead in the third quarter with a 14-3 advantage and held Laneville scoreless in the final period while scoring 20 points to post their big win. 

Four Maidens scored in double figures during the game. Hatton led with 14 points, followed by 11 for Wila Davis. Caveness and Passchier each had 10. Bandy Bizzell and Kelsey Sexton scored 8 each. Looney, Lynsie Bizzell and Kaylee Davis each had 4 and Mitchell 2. Sexton had a three-pointer and a free throw and Wila Davis had five two-point field goals and a free throw.

In the Troup game, the Maidens held the Lady Tigers to single digits in every quarter. They led 5-2 in the first quarter and were ahead 22-10 at the half. In the third quarter, they outscored Troup 14-8 and finished with an 8-7 edge in the final period.

Scoring for the Maidens were Wila Davis with 12, Looney with 8,  Hatton with 7 and Sexton 6. Mitchell had 4, Caveness 3 and Kaylee Davis and Passchier with 2 each. Wila Davis was 4 for 6 and Mitchell was 2 for 5 at the free throw line.

Indians win second place in Troup

Glen Evans Classic on Dec. 28-29

The Frankston Indians finished in second place in the boys’ division of the Glen Evans Classic at Troup on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 28-29, winning over Winona 45-30 Wednesday afternoon, according to a report by Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

Troup took first in their own Classic and dominated the superlatives.

Two Indians made the All-Tournament team: Isaiah Allen and Cael Bruno.

The Indians placed second after a 3-1 performance in the four-team competition.

After falling to Troup in the Classic opener, 35-11, the Indians got things together and came back to defeat Laneville 53-34 later in the day. Then on Wednesday, they defeated Kennard 68-36 early in the day and capped the day with a 45-30 victory over Winona.

In the Winona game, the Indians took an 8-1 advantage in the first quarter and matched Winona with 13 in the second period to lead 21-14 at halftime. They outscored the Wildcats 11-4 in the third quarter to go into the final period ahead 32-18. In the fourth period, Winona tried a comeback but the Indians held on at 13-14 to secure the win.

Leading scorer for the Indians was Isaiah Allen with 16. Cael Bruno scored 12 points. Caleb Ramsey had 6 and Kody Loebig 5. Reese Hicks and Benton Allen each had 3. Isaiah Allen had two 3-pointers and Ramsey and Loebig one each.

Against Kennard, the Indians jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter 20-5. Even though Kennard picked up their scoring in the second quarter, the Indians held on for a 19-15 advantage and a 39-20 halftime lead. In the second half, the Indians’ scoring continued and they increased their lead going into the final quarter to 54-28. With a 14-8 edge in the final quarter, the Tribe secured their win.

Jake Westbrook led scorers with 20 points, including two 3-pointers. Ramsey also was in double figures with 11, including a three-point goal. Benton Allen had 9. Loebig and Bruno each had 8, Loebig with two three-pointers and Bruno one. Josh Fridinger had 5 points and Kason Newport 3. Hicks and Isaiah Allen had 2 each.

Against Kennard, the Indians dominated the first half, outscoring Kennard 17-5 and 15-7 in the first two quarters for a 32-12 lead at the half. Although Kennard had a 22-21 advantage in the second half, it was not nearly enough to overcome the Indians’ first half performance.

Bruno and Loebig led Indians’ scoring with 13 points each. Loebig had three 3-pointers and Bruno one. Ramsey used one 3-pointer and 2 for 5 free throws to helped him score 7. Westbrook had 6 and Isaiah Allen 5, including a 3-pointer. Benton Allen had two free throws which contributed to his 4. Newport had a single three-point goal and Hicks had two points from a single field goal. 

Against Troup, the Indians had problems hitting their shots. They scored no more than three points in each quarter, trailing 19-5 at halftime. Despite the fact that the Indian defense held Troup to only 16 points in the second half, the Tribe could score only 6 to hand the Tigers a 24-point win.

Isaiah Allen’s three-pointer early in the game gave him the scoring lead with 3. Benton Allen and Westbrook each had a single field goal for 2 points each. Newport hit two free throws for 2 and Ramsey and Bruno each hit a free throw.

Maidens, Indians to compete

on Dec. 28-29 in Troup Classic

The Frankston Indians and Maidens will be playing in the Glen Evans Classic at Troup on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 28-29.

Other than Frankston, boys and girls basketball teams from Troup, Kennard, Laneville and Winona will be competing on the two days during the holidays.

On Tuesday, the Maidens will play Troup at 10:45 a.m. followed by a game between the Indians and Troup at 12 noon. Frankston will be designated as home teams. Later that day, the Maidens will play Laneville at 3:45 p.m. followed by the Indians vs. Laneville at 5 p.m. Frankston will be designated as visiting teams.

Then on Wednesday, the Maidens will play Kennard at 8:15 a.m. followed by a game between the Indians and Kennard at 9:30 a.m. Both Frankston teams will be designated as home teams. At 1:15 p.m., the Maidens will play Winona and the Indians will follow against Winona at 2:30 p.m. Both Frankston teams will be designated as visitors.

According to Classic officials, team plaques will be awarded for first, second and third places. Six players will be honored as “all tournament”, one as “Top Defender” and another as Most Valuable Player.

Tie-breakers are to be decided first by head-to-head competition. If a second tie-breaker is needed, it will be decided by the point differential of those teams involved in the tie-breaker. In a three-way tie, first place will be awarded to the point differential winner, and second and third by head-to-head competition. Point differential equals a maximum of 20 points.

Indians put together strong defense,

offense to down New Summerfield 

The Frankston Indians are going into the Christmas break with a 10-3 non-district record after a victory 56-31 over New Summerfield Friday, Dec. 17, according to Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

Frankston is coming off a third place finish in their own Frankston Invitational Tournament on Dec. 9-11.

The Indians held their opponents to single digits in three of the four quarters, outscoring New Summerfield in all four periods. The Indians started strong 15-6 in the first quarter and led 25-13 at the half. They edged their opponents 12-10 in the third quarter and then surged to a 19-8 advantage in the final quarter to secure their win.

Leading scorer was Jake Westbrook, back after recovering from an injury. He scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Also in double figures were Kody Loebig with 13 points, including a three-pointer and a 2 for 2 performance at the free throw line, and Caleb Ramsey with 11, including a three-pointer and 2 for 4 in free throws. Josh Fridinger had 7 points on two 3-pointers and a free throw. Benton Allen scored 6 points, including two free throws in six trips to the line. Reese Hicks scored 1 for 4 at the charity stripe.

The Indians will be in the Troup Tournament on Dec. 28-29 seeking to enhance their showing in non-district play.

in non-district test Dec. 17

The Frankston Maidens fell to Whitehouse 43-30 in a non-district basketball game Friday, Dec. 17 on the road after a third place finish in their own Frankston Invitational Tournament Dec. 9-11, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The Maidens and Whitehouse both played it close in the first quarter with the Maidens owning a 4-3 advantage, but Whitehouse came back in the second quarter to outscore the Maidens 16-8 and take a 20-11 lead into the dressing room at halftime. Unfortunately for the Maidens, they were unable to bounce back in the third quarter, as Whitehouse again outscored the Frankston girls 12-6 to boost their lead to 31-18 going into the final period. The Maidens tried a comeback in the fourth quarter but Whitehouse matched their scoring 12-12 to preserve their 13-point victory.

Scoring for the Maidens were Maggie Caveness with 8, Brianna (Bri) Looney and Wila Davis with 5 each and Bandy Bizzell, Kelsey Sexton and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton with 4 each. Wila Davis was held to a single field goal, a three-pointer, and was 2 for 4 at the free throw line. Hatton sank 4 of 5 free throws in the first quarter. Caveness had three field goals and was 2 for 2 in free throw attempts. Looney was 3 for 4 at the charity stripe and had a single field goal.

On Dec. 28-29, the Maidens will be in the Troup Tournament.

Maidens, Indians win third place

in Frankston Tournament Dec. 11

The Frankston Maidens and Frankston Indians won third place in their own Frankston Invitational Basketball Tournament Saturday, Dec. 11 defeating Neches  35-31 and Grapeland 49-43, respectively, in an exciting climax for the two teams in a very competitive three days of play, according to reports from Maidens Coach Christi Coker and Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Maidens looked ready to play as the game began around noon on Saturday. 

The Frankston girls jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first quarter as their shots fell and their defense created opportunities. Neches came back with a 9-7 advantage in the second quarter, still in the face of a hustling Maiden defense. At halftime, the Maidens had a 19-9 lead. The second half was a battle as Neches first had a 7-6 performance but the two teams were 10-10 in the final quarter and with free throw accuracy by Maggie Caveness, Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton and  Wila and Kaylee Davis, at 4 for 4, 3 for 4 and 2 for 2, respectively, telling the tale. Kaylee and Wila got the last free throws which iced the win

Leading the Maiden scoring was Hatton with 10 points, strategically positioned at key times during the contest. Wila Davis had 7, including a 3-pointer, and Kelsey Sexton and Caveness with 6 each. Brianna (Bri) Looney, Kaylee Davis and Bandy Bizzell had 2 each. Hatton also had a key three-point goal.

For the Indians against Grapeland, the Tribe started things with a lead in the first quarter 8-5 and then were 16-14 in the second period to lead 24-19 at the half. They continued their scoring leadership with a 13-7 performance in the third quarter to enter the fourth with a 37-26 lead, all the time played tight defense. Grapeland outscored the Indians in the fourth period 17-12 but the earlier Tribe lead held up, thanks to some timely field goals by Kody Loebig and some key free throws by Benton Allen who hit 3 of 8 and Caleb Ramsey with 7 of 9.

Coach Scotty Albritton praised his players for their effort.

“Our guys fought through a ton of adversity during the tournament,” he said.  “We were already playing without Cael Bruno, and then had to play this tournament without Jake Westbrook also.

“We had several guys step up and contribute in a big way this weekend,” the coach said.

Leading scorer for the Indians was Ramsey with 15 points followed by Benton Allen with 11. Isaiah Allen contributed a couple of three-pointers and 2 of 2 at the free throw line for 8 points. Kason Newport had two 3-pointers and 8 points. Loebig got 4 points and Josh Fridinger hit an early three-pointer.

Maidens, Indians fall to Mabank,

Tyler Heat in tourney semifinals

The Frankston Maidens and Indians advanced to the semifinals of the Frankston Invitational Tournament Friday, Dec. 10 and the Maidens fell to Mabank 50-41 and the Indians lost to Tyler Heat 38-28, according to reports by Maidens Coach Christi Coker and Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

Both teams will be in third place games on Saturday, Dec. 11. The Maidens will face Neches at 12 noon and the Indians will go against Grapeland at 1:30 p.m.

The Maidens took an early lead over the Mabank team, outscoring them in the first quarter 14-10 and in the second quarter 9-6 for a 23-16 halftime lead. However, Mabank came out of the halftime dressing room with a surge, scoring 25 points to only 6 for the Maidens, leading 41-29 at the end of the third quarter. The Maidens tried a comeback in the fourth quarter 12-9 and had a chance to move ahead but it was not enough. Mabank held on for a 9-point win.

None of the Maiden players could score in double figures or connect on three pointers while Mabank had three players in double figures and became prolific in making their shots and mounting a strong defense.

Scoring for the Maidens were Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton with 8, Wila Davis and Maggie Caveness with 7 each, Brianna (Bri) Looney with 6, Bandy Bizzell and Kelsey Sexton with 4 each, Kaylee Davis with 3 and Lynsie Bizzell with 2. Hatton was 4 for 8 and Looney 2 for 2 at the free throw line.

The Indians had trouble scoring against the Tyler Heat defense although they played tough defense themselves. The Heat outscored the Indians 8-4 in the first quarter and 14-4 in the second to lead 22-8 at the half. The Tribe tried a comeback in the third quarter outscoring the Heat 10-5 and trailing by only a point 10-11 in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the Heat advantage in the first half.

Leading Indians scoring was Caleb Ramsey with 11. Kason Newport and Kody Loebig each had 6. Isaiah Allen had 3 and Benton Allen 2. Ramsey was 2 of 7 at the free throw line and had a three-pointer, as did Isaiah Allen and Loebig. Newport had two 3-pointers.

Maidens, Indians win Friday, Dec. 10

The Frankston Maidens and Indians were victorious in the pool games played on Friday, Dec. 10 and both earned places in the tournament semifinals in games to be played later in the evening, according to reports by Maiden Coach Christi Coker and Indians Coach Scotty Albritton. 

 The Maidens won over Arp 40-24 in a game at around noon on Friday and the Indians defeated Ore City in close battle 41-33 early in the afternoon.

In other pool play on Friday, for the girls, Neches defeated Grace Community 44-25, Lufkin Pineywoods won over Tyler Heat 47-40 and Mabank defeated Malakoff 48-46. For the boys, Bullard defeated Troup 60-39, Tyler Heat won over Gladewater 50-38 and Grapeland defeated Elkhart 68-42.

Neches, Mabank, Malakoff and Frankston were top seeds in the girls’ brackets and Tyler Heat, Grapeland, Bullard and Frankston in the boys’ brackets, 

In the Maidens game against Arp, the Frankston girls outscored the Lady Tigers in every quarter but the second when they were edged by a single point. Largely because of a lot of missed shots the scoring was limited but both teams played a tight defense. The Maidens led by only 15-10 at the half but they picked up the pace in the second half, going ahead 30-16 after the third quarter and outscoring the Lady Tigers 10-8 in the final quarter to secure the win.

Scoring for the Maidens were Wila Davis and Maggie Caveness with 7 each, Kelsey Sexton with 6, Brianna (Bri) Looney, Bandy Bizzell and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton with 5 each, Kaylee Davis with 4,  and Lynsie Bizzell with 1. Wila Davis had a three-pointer and was 4 for 4 at the free throw line. Caveness was 7 of 10 at the charity stripe.

The Indians against Ore City had a slow start scoring trailing Ore City by a point 9-10 in the first quarter. However they picked up the pace in the second and third quarters, leading 22-21 at the half and going ahead 37-31 at the end of the third quarter. They outscored Ore City 4-2 in the final period, partly due to a more deliberate style of play designed to keep the ball out of the hands of the sometimes explosive Ore City scorers.

Leading scorer for the Indians was Kason Newport with 14 points, thanks largely to three 3-pointers. Josh Fridinger had 8 points, including two threes.  Caleb Ramsey had 7, including a three-pointer, Benton Allen had 5 and Isaiah Allen 4 and Kody Loebig had one three for 3 points. Fridinger was 2 for 2 and Isaiah Allen 2 for 5 at the free throw line. 

On Saturday, at the high school gym, the Maidens will play for third place against Neches at 12 noon and the Indians will play against Grapeland for third place at 1:30 p.m. The Girls Championship game between Malakoff and Mabank will be at 3 p.m. and the Boys Championship game between Tyler Heat and Bullard at 4:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, at the Ousley Middle School gym, Game #5 for the girls will be between Tyler Grace and the loser of the Arp-Pineywoods game at 12 noon and Boys Game #5  will be Gladewater and Elkhart game.at 1:30 p.m. The Girls Consolation game between Tyler Heat and the Arp-Lufkin Pineywoods winner will be at 3 p.m. and the Boys Consolation game will be between Ore City and Troup at 4:30 p.m.

Full day of basketball Dec. 9

at Frankston HS Tournament 

The first day of the Frankston Invitational basketball tournament got underway Thursday, Dec. 9 with a whole host of pool play games with outcomes which will determine seeding for bracket play which begins Friday, Dec. 10.

In the first game of the day at the FHS gym at 9 a.m. the Malakoff girls defeated Tyler Heat 57-23 and at 10:30 the Mabank Girls won over Lufkin Pineywoods 55-28. At 12 noon, the Frankston Maidens won over Tyler Grace Community 57-27.

At 1:30 p.m. in boys competition, the Frankston Indians defeated Elkhart 62-21 followed at 3 p.m. by the Grapeland boys downing Ore City 83-36. At 4:30 p.m. Bullard defeated Gladewater boys 88-36. Then at a game scheduled at 6 p.m. Neches won over the Frankston Maidens 52-30. In the nightcap the Grapeland boys won a close one over the Frankston Indians 55-46.

In games played at the Ousley Middle School Gym, Neches girls defeated Arp 43-6 followed by a boys game in which Ore City won over Elkhart. 50-49. At 12 noon Tyler Heat boys won over Bullard 52-49 and then at 1:30 p.m. Troup boys defeated Gladewater 65-33. At a 3 p.m. game, the Grace Community girls won over Arp 37-27 and at 4:30 p.m. the Malakoff girls defeated Lufkin Pineywoods 50-24. At 6 p.m., the Tyler Heat boys won over Troup 53-37 and in the nightcap, Mabank girls defeated Tyler Heat 54-20.

Maidens defeat Rusk five 49-35,

preparing for Frankston Tourney

The Frankston Maidens varsity basketball team increased their season record to 9-2 with a 49-35 victory over the Rusk Lady Eagles Tuesday, Dec. 7 on the road, according to a report by Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The Maidens started slow, leading Rusk by only 8-7 in the first quarter but they picked up their scoring pace in the second period outscoring the Lady Eagles 15-9 to lead 23-16 at the half. In the third quarter, the Maidens outscored Rusk 11-8 and secured their win with a 15-11 performance in the final period.

Maggie Caveness led Maiden scoring with 14 points and was leading rebounder pulling down 14 rebounds. Brianna (Bri) Looney and Wila Davis each had 6 points. Kaylee Davis had 5. Scoring 2 points each were Pauline Passchier, Bandy Bizzell, Kelsey Sexton and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton.

The Maidens will play in their own Frankston Tournament Thursday thru Saturday, Dec. 9-11 with pool play against Tyler Grace Community, Neches and Arp.

Frankston basketball tournament

Dec. 9-11 to bring big crowd here

Boys and girls basketball teams from around the East Texas area will be competing on Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 9-11 in the Frankston Invitational Tournament, sponsored by Tatum Insurance of Frankston.

A large crowd of athletes, coaches, students, parents and other fans are expected to converge on Frankston during the three days.

The tournament will be conducted with Pool Play and girls teams from Frankston, Arp, Tyler Grace and Neches will be in Pool A while teams from Lufkin Pineywoods, Mabank, Malakoff and Tyler Heat will be in Pool B.

Boys teams from Frankston, Elkhart, Grapeland and Ore City are in Pool A and Bullard, Gladewater, Troup and Tyler Heat in Pool B.

Games will be played in both the Frankston High School and the G.V. (Bo) Ousley Middle School Gyms.

The Indians and Maidens will play all games at the high school gym. The Maidens will play at 12 noon and 6 p.m. Thursday and 12 noon on Friday in pool play.  The Indians will play at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Other times are to be determined by seeding.

In the case of ties, seeding for the Friday and Saturday bracket play will be determined by the head-to-head winner getting the higher seed with other seeds determined by a point differential with a 20-point maximum, according to tournament officials.

Full days of competition will be held on Thursday and Friday in both gyms.

Maidens fall to Neches 40-36

in tourney title game Dec. 4

The Frankston Maidens varsity made it to the finals of the girls division of the Slocum Tournament Saturday, Dec. 3 only to fall to Neches 40-36 after wins in the first three rounds of the tournament, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

Prior to the loss in the championship game, the Maidens’ only other loss was to this same Neches team, that time by only three points. The Maidens are now 8-2 for the season so far.

Frankston reached the finals by virtue of victories on Thursday, Dec. 2 over Shelbyville 49-30 and Alto 69-23 and then winning a semi-finals game against Troup 38-16 on Friday, Dec. 3.

In the championship game with Neches, the two teams were tied at 5-5 in the first period, but Neches outscored the Maidens 9-6 in the second quarter to lead 14-11 at halftime. Neches  increased their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Maidens 16-12 for a 30-23 lead going into the final quarter. The Maidens outscored Neches 13-10 in the final quarter but it was not enough. Neches won by four points, 

Wila Davis led scorers for the Maidens with 10 points. Brianna (Bri) Looney had 9, Kelsey Sexton 8, Maggie Caveness 5,  Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton 3,  and Kaylee Davis 1. Wila Davis had a three-pointer and was 3 for 5 at the free throw line. Looney was 3 for 4 and Caveness was 3 for 6 at the charity stripe.

Earlier in the tournament in the first round game against Shelbyville, the Maidens took an early lead, in the first quarter by 12-9 and then 17-4 in the second period to lead 29-13 at halftime. The two teams battled to a 9-9 draw in the third quarter but the Maidens won the final quarter 11-8 to secure the win.

Wila Davis and Kelsey Sexton led Maidens scorers against Shelbyville with 10 each. Maggie Caveness had 9, Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton 7 and Brianna (Bri) Looney 5. Bandy Bizzell had 4 and Lynsie Bizzell and Kaylee Davis 2 each. Wila Davis was 4 for 4 and Kaylee Davis was 2 for 2 at the free throw line.

Frankston held Alto to single digits in every quarter. They outscored the Yellowjackets 17-9 in the first quarter and were ahead 37-15 at halftime. They outscored Alto 32-8 in the second half to secure the win.

In the Alto game, Hatton had 18 points, Wila Davis and Looney had 9 each, Kaylee Davis and Sexton 7 each and Pauline Passchier 6. Mya Mitchell had 5 and Bandy Bizzell and Maggie Caveness 4 each. Sexton was 5 of 6, Mitchell and Hatton were 3 of 4 and Wila Davis was 2 for 2 at the free throw line.

In the semi-finals game against Troup, the Maidens led 14-4 in the first quarter and 22-7 at halftime. In the second half they outscored the Lady Tigers 16-9 for the victory.

Against Troup, Hatton led scorers with 9. Bandy Bizzell had 8, Looney 5, Kaylee Davis and Caveness 4 each and Lynsie Bizzell, Passchier, Mitchell and Sexton with 2 each.

The Maidens are scheduled to go to Rusk on Tuesday, Dec. 7 with the junior varsity game starting at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity contest. Then on Thursday thru Saturday, Dec. 9-11 the varsity will be in their own Frankston Tournament.

Indians fall to Huntington

for tourney title on Dec. 4

The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team fell to Huntington 37-34 in the Championship game of the Slocum Tournament Saturday, Dec. 4 after having won over Troup in a semi-finals game Friday, Dec. 3.

It was the Indians’ first loss during non-district play. They are now 6-1 for the season so far.

The Indians started off strong in the first quarter, taking a 14-8 lead. However, in the second quarter they could get only 5 points while the Red Devils were scoring 11. The two teams went into the dressing room at halftime knotted at 19-19.

The second half was equally troublesome for the Indians as Huntington outscored the Indians 11-6 in the third, giving them a 30-25 lead. The Indians still had a chance to go ahead but they could get only a 9-7 edge in the fourth, and Huntington won by 3 points.

Scoring for the Indians against Huntington were Jake Westbrook and Kody Loebig with 11 each, Caleb Ramsey with 10 and Isaiah Allen with 2. Loebig had three 3-pointers, Westbrook two and Ramsey one. Westbrook and Ramsey were 1 for 2 from the free throw line.

Earlier in the tournament the Indians had won the first round over Palestine Westwood and the second round against the Alto Yellowjackets Thursday, Dec. 2, according to a report from FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians defeated the Troup Tigers 41-13 in the semi-finals game on Friday.

They defeated Westwood 58-23 early in the day on Thursday and then, in a later game, they won over Alto 55-37.

In the Troup game, the Indians outscored the Tigers in every quarter, holding them to single digits in three and no score in one. They were ahead 10-3 in the first quarter and 18-5 at the half. They outscored the Tigers 23-8 in the second half to secure the win.

Benton Allen and Jake Westbrook led scorers with 12 points each. Caleb Ramsey had 6 and Isaiah Allen 4. Kody Loebig had 3 and Kason Newport and Reese Hicks had 2 each.

In the game against Westwood, the Indians held the Panthers to single digits in all four quarters. In the first quarter they outscored Westwood 10-3 and 18-9 in the second period to lead at halftime 28-12. They continued their dominance in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 16-5 in the third period and 14-6 in the final quarter.

Jake Westbrook led Indian scorers with 25 points, including three 3-pointers. Benton Allen and Isaiah Allen each had 8 points. Kason Newport had 6 on two 3-pointers. Kody Loebig had 4 and Tripp Hallmark had a three-pointer. Caleb Ramsey and Josh Fridinger each scored 2.

In the Alto game, it was close in the first quarter with the Indians having the edge 15-14. However, they outscored the Yellowjackets 16-12 in the second period to lead 31-26 at halftime. The Indians had a big third quarter, outscoring Alto 19-5. Alto had a 6-5 fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome the Tribe’s 50-31 lead going into the period.

Leading scorer for the Indians against Alto was Ramsey with 19, including three 3-pointers. Benton Allen had 9, Loebig 8, Westbrook 7 including a three-pointer, Newport 6 with two 3s, Isaiah Allen 4 and Fridinger 2. Ramsey was 2 for 2 at the free throw line and Benton Allen was 1 for 2.

The Indians game with Alto on Tuesday, Dec. 7 was canceled.. Then on Thursday thru Saturday, Dec. 9-11 the Indians will be in their own tournament.

Indians in Slocum Tourney

Championship game Dec. 4

The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team will go into the Championship game of the Slocum Tournament Saturday, Dec. 4 after having won over Troup in a semi-finals game Friday, Dec. 3.

They had won the first round over Palestine Westwood and the second round against the Alto Yellowjackets Thursday, Dec. 2, according to a report from FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians (6-0) will be playing Huntington (3-3) in the championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday after they defeated the Troup Tigers 41-13 in the semi-finals game on Friday.

They defeated Westwood 58-23 early in the day on Thursday and then, in a later game, they won over Alto 55-37.

In the Troup game, the Indians outscored the Tigers in every quarter, holding them to single digits in three and no score in one. They were ahead 10-3 in the first quarter and 18-5 at the half. They outscored the Tigers 23-8 in the second half to secure the win.

Benton Allen and Jake Westbrook led scorers with 12 points each. Caleb Ramsey had 6 and Isaiah Allen 4. Kody Loebig had 3 and Kason Newport and Reese Hicks had 2 each.

In the game against Westwood, the Indians held the Panthers to single digits in all four quarters. In the first quarter they outscored Westwood 10-3 and 18-9 in the second period to lead at halftime 28-12. They continued their dominance in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 16-5 in the third period and 14-6 in the final quarter.

In the Alto game, it was close in the first quarter with the Indians having the edge 15-14. However, they outscored the Yellowjackets 16-12 in the second period to lead 31-26 at halftime. The Indians had a big third quarter, outscoring Alto 19-5. Alto had a 6-5 fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome the Tribe’s 50-31 lead going into the period.

Leading scorer for the Indians against Alto was Ramsey with 19, including three 3-pointers. Benton Allen had 9, Loebig 8, Westbrook 7 including a three-pointer, Newport 6 with two 3s, Isaiah Allen 4 and Fridinger 2. Ramsey was 2 for 2 at the free throw line and Benton Allen was 1 for 2.

Indians basketball varsity going

into Slocum Tourney semi-finals

The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team will go into the semi-finals of the Slocum Tournament Friday, Dec. 3 after having won the first round over Palestine Westwood and the second round against the Alto Yellowjackets Thursday, Dec. 2, according to a report from FHS Coach Scotty Albritton.

Maidens varsity boosts record to 5-1

defeating Troup by 50-43 on Nov. 30 

The Frankston Maidens varsity basketball team took an early lead over the Troup Lady Tigers Tuesday, Nov. 30 and held on for a 50-43 non-district win on the road, according to a report by Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The victory boosted the Maidens season record to 5-1 so far.

The Maidens outscored the Lady Tigers 13-10 in both the first and second quarters to lead 26-20 at the half. They scored 10 points to only 3 for Troup in the third quarter, which turned out to be a key to offsetting the Lady Tigers 20-14 fourth quarter comeback.

Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton and Wila Davis teamed up to score 14 points each to lead Maiden scorers. Maggie Caveness added 12, Bandy Bizzell 4, and Brianna (Bri) Looney, Kaylee Davis and Kelsey Sexton 2 each to round out the Maidens scoring. Hatton scored two 3-pointers. Caveness was 4 for 5 and Wila Davis was 6 for 9 at the free throw line.

The Maidens are scheduled to play in the Slocum Varsity Tournament while the  Maidens Junior Varsity will be in the LaPoynor Tournament on Thursday thru Saturday, Dec. 2-4. Then on Tuesday, Dec. 7, the Maidens will journey to Rusk with JV action starting at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at about 6:15 p.m.

Indians’ team effort sparks 61-36

victory over Westwood on Nov. 23

The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team won over the Palestine Westwood Panthers 61-36 on Tuesday, Nov. 23 in the FHS gym to boost their season record so far to 3-0, according to a report from Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians outscored the Panthers in every quarter in a team effort on both offense and defense, the coach said. After taking the first quarter 14-9, the Indians score 24 points in the second quarter while holding Westwood to only 9. The Tribe led 38-18 at the intermission. The Indians continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 13-10 in the third period and 10-8 in the final quarter to solidify their win.

Jake Westbrook led Indian scorers with 16 points. Isaiah Allen had 12 and Caleb Ramsey 11. Kody Loebig and Benton Allen each had 9 points and Kason Newport 4. Westbrook, Isaiah Allen and Loebig had two 3-pointers each.

“We played as a team today,” Coach Albritton exclaimed. “It was fun watching the guys play together.  Everyone was making extra passes to open guys, and those guys were knocking down shots.”

The Indian coach said that  “again, our defense played great!”

The Indians were scheduled to host Beckville on Tuesday, Nov. 30 but the game was canceled by Beckville, Coach Albritton said. On Dec. 2-4, the varsity Indians will be in the Slocum Tournament

Maidens defeat 5A Jacksonville,

Elkhart in action on Nov. 22-23

The Frankston Maidens varsity basketball team won in two non-district games in action on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 22 and 23 to increase their record to 4-1 for the season so far, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

On Monday, they journeyed to Jacksonville and defeated the Class 5A Jacksonville Maidens 31-28 and then on Tuesday, they defeated the Elkhart Lady Elks 75-27 at the FHS gym.

Against Jacksonville they outscored their opponent in the second and fourth quarters 8-6 and 11-6, the latter effort securing the three-point win.

Scoring for Frankston in the Jacksonville game were Brianna (Bri) Looney with 9, Wila Davis 8, Kaylee Davis and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton with 4 each, and Mya Mitchell, Lynsie Bizzell and Bandy Bizzell with 2 each.

On Tuesday, the Maidens outscored the Lady Elks in every quarter, leading 37-22 at the half and dominating the second half, taking the third quarter 23-3 and the fourth quarter 15-2 to secure the convincing victory.

Against Elkhart, Looney scored 15, Hatton 13, Davis 11, Pauline Passchier 10, Bandy Bizzell 8 and Kaylee Davis 6. Kelsey Sexton and Mitchell had 5 each and Maggie Caveness scored 2.

The Maiden travel to Troup, after Thanksgiving, on Tuesday, Nov. 30 and then play in the Slocum Varsity Tournament  on Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 2-4.

Indians up record to 2-0 with win

over Elkhart Elks 54-31 on Nov. 22

The Frankston Indians varsity basketball team increased their season record to 2-0 Monday, Nov. 22 with a 54-31 victory over the Elkhart Elks in a non-district contest on the road, Indians Coach Scotty Albritton reported.

The Indians went ahead 10-7 in the first quarter and extended their lead with an 18-9 second quarter performance. They led 28-16 at halftime. In the third quarter they outscored the Elks 12-5 and secured their victory with a 14-10 performance in the final quarter.

Leading scorer was Jake Westbrook who had 15 points, including two 3-pointers and went 3 for 4 at the charity stripe. Caleb Ramsey was second with 13 points, including a 5 for 6 free throw performance. Kason Newport and Kody Loebig, each with two 3s, scored 6 points each. Benton Allen had 5, Josh Fridinger with a 3-pointer and Tripp Hallmark, Isaiah Allen and Reese Hicks with 2 each. Hallmark was 2 for 2 at the free throw line. The Indians were 11 for 15 in free throws.

Coach Albritton said that just like the first game the Indians’ defense led to their offense.

We are getting deflections that lead to steals, like the 15 steals we got today, and some easy baskets,” the coach said. “We are not shooting as well as we would like, but, if we keep playing defense like this, we will win a lot of games.”

Earlier in the day, the Indian junior varsity won their second game, defeating the Elkhart JV 45-41.

The Indians are scheduled to host Palestine Westwood Tuesday, Nov. 23 with junior varsity action starting at 1 p.m. Then on Nov. 30, they host Beckville at the FHS gym with the JV game starting at 5 p.m.

Indians take season opener 59-33

in non-district basketball contest

The Frankston Indians basketball team started for their 2021-2022 season with a 59-33 victory over the Rusk Eagles in a non-district encounter at the FHS gym Friday, Nov. 19, according to a report from Indians Coach Scotty Albritton.

The Indians started strong with a 20-8 performance in the first quarter and led 30-19 at halftime. That first quarter performance was sparked by a strong defense coupled with a 13-point performance by Kody Loebig who had three 3-pointers to assure the Tribe lead.

In the second half, the Indians continued their strong defense and spread the scoring among other team members to outscore the Eagles 29-14.

Loebig ended the evening with 20 points but scored only one field goal in the second half. Benton Allen added his spark to the Indian offense, mostly in the second half. He scored 12 points, six 2-point field goals and was 2 for 5 at the free throw line. Kason Newport added 9 points with three 3-pointers. Jake Westbrook had 8, including two 3-pointers. Josh Fridinger had 4, including a 3 and a free throw. Isaiah Allen and Caleb Ramsey added 3 each.

Coach Albritton said he thought it was a good way to start the season.

“Our defense played well, really hustled, and created a bunch of turnovers,” the coach said. “I believe, at times, we showed some first-game jitters on offense.”

Coach Albritton said, “Overall, I’m excited how hard we played.”

Earlier in the evening, the Indian junior varsity won over their Rusk counterparts 48-20. They had a 10-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and scored 7 points to only 1 for the Rusk JV in the second period to lead 17-3 at the half. The Tribe JV picked up the offensive pace in the third quarter outscoring their opponents 15-8 and had a 16-9 performance in the final period.

The Indians are hoping to continue their winning ways when they journey to Elkhart on Monday, Nov. 22 with junior varsity action starting at 1 p.m., followed by the varsity game.  (See Indians-Rusk Video clip HERE )

Maidens fall in close game

to Neches 44-41 on Nov. 19

The Frankston Maidens lost a close non-district basketball game to Neches Friday, Nov. 19 by a score of 44-41 at Neches,  according to a report by Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

The Maidens fell behind early trailing 6-9 in the first quarter and 24-12 at halftime. The Frankston girls came back in the second half, winning the third quarter 12-11 and the fourth period 17-9 but they came up short of offsetting their first half deficit.

Wila Davis led Maiden scorers with 11 points. Brianna (Bri) Looney had 9, Ja’Shalyn  (Shay) Hatton 7 and Maggie Caveness 6. Lynsie Bizzell, Bandy Bizzell, Kaylee Davis and Kelsey Sexton each had 2 points.

The Maidens journey to Jacksonville for a 12:15 game on Monday, Nov. 22 and then host Elkhart at 10:15 on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Maidens come off slow start

The Frankston Maidens varsity basketball team got off to a slow start but came around to take a 48-29 victory over the Tyler Heat Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the FHS gym, according to a report from Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

Freshman Wila Davis led scoring with 12 points and 4 steals. Brianna Looney had 8 points, 5 steals and 10 deflections. Maggie Caveness, Mya Mitchell and Bandy Bizzell each had 6 points. Caveness and Mitchell each had 12 rebounds. Kaylee Davis had 5 points and 5 steals, Pauline Passchier had 3 points and Ja’Shalyn (Shay) Hatton had 2 points.

The Maidens varsity is now 2-0 in non-district play.

On Friday, Nov. 19, the Maidens varsity will go to Neches for a non-district game, starting at 5:30 p.m.

FMS Maidens basketball teams

split contests with Tyler Grace

The Frankston Middle School Maidens split in games with Tyler Grace on Friday, Nov. 12, the eighth grade winning 33-25 and the seventh grade losing 34-24 to their Grace counterparts, according to a report from FMS Maidens Coach Myka Daniels.

Leading the scorers for the eighth grade Maidens was Kylie Morton with 15 points. Kinsey Howie had 6, Ansley Fridinger 5, Hailey Pizano 3 and Briley Jimenez and Rachel Fletcher 2 each.

Leading scorer for the seventh grade Maidens was Morgan Redic with 14. Vanessa Wall and Aliyah Guthrie each had 4 and Klara Caveness 2.

The two teams are scheduled to begin 19-2A competition on Thursday, Nov. 18 at Kerens with action beginning at 5 p.m.

Westwood 69-30 in season start

The Frankston Maidens varsity basketball team won the season opener against Palestine Westwood 69-30 on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Palestine, according to a report by Maidens Coach Christi Coker.

Scoring for the Maidens were Brianna (Bri) Looney and Ja’shayln (Shay) Hatton with 15 points each, Mya Mitchell with 13, Wila Davis with 7, Maggie Caveness and Kelsey Sexton with 6 each, Bandy Bizzell with 3 and Kaylee Davis and Pauline Passchier had 2 each.

The Maidens had been scheduled to host Arp on Friday, Nov. 12 but the game has been canceled due to Arp’s football playoffs schedule, the coach said.

The Maiden varsity will be back in action against the Tyler Heat on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the FHS gym starting at 5 p.m. The Maidens will play at Neches on Friday, Nov. 19 with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. followed at about 6:15 by the varsity game.
